Thank you for posting. This is Jacob’s dad, flying runs in the family as his great grandfather was a pilot and ran the local airport as did his Uncle Sam after that but it’s been years since we’ve had anyone in the family flying the skies around here. It’s great that he is able to carry on a tradition, Thanks for teaching him!!

I absolutely LOVED this video! Reminded me of my first few flights... feels like ages ago, but you brought it back! Congrats to all the students! More people to share the sky with! :-)

I absolutely love watching these new student first flights. I'm obsessed. Am I allowed to be obsessed? What a great experience this has been.

I love watching Aviators taking their first flights. I can still hear Mike Brown's voice in my ear from my first few flights in Lake Wales almost three years back. I wish I had great drone footage like this to go along with my memory.

That was a excellent video and captured many views as if you were experiencing it from a student on that day. I found myself say "keep running", as the students took off for thr first time. Thanks Fletch. I will never get that out of my head. Awesome job to all!

I am really impressed with this landing video instruction. I recently had a hard landing due to pulling my breaks at about 45-50' up about half way. When I got to 30' I was doing about 40 mph. That last 30' came up real fast and I crash landed without ever being able to finish the breaking flare! I lived and learned!

New students are typically pretty scared and WILL NOT be thinking for themselves. You can tell by how long it takes them to respond to your commands. You have give them direct orders that they MUST OBEY instantly. You kinda have to treat them like 3 year olds, and do not share anything with them that they don't need to know in that instant while in the air. It will only confuse them more. I loved your last statement. :)

I swear prop guards have gotten smaller since I looked at this sport some 3-4 years ago. I hope I can find awesome teachers like you guys over here in Oregon. Pickings look slim for teachers up here with mixed reviews.

You should emphasize that their hands should be up on takeoff until the glider is about ready to fly. I noticed a few of them were holding brakes trying to launch and it really hinders your takeoffs. It gets expensive when you get pulled over backwards and break props because the glider is always going to try to fall behind you. Good video!

what happens to the wing exactly when you full brake, (flare). how does the wing change shape? Does it just scoop more air from the back? does it pull the back of it down?

There's a time and a place to debrief a student pilot. It's not when their in the air and want to critique the inflation/ launch. They should be focusing on the moment and what's going to happen next. Also critiquing shouldn't be done over the radio.

I agree. It's the first flight, all focus shoud be what is happening now and what to do next. Save the other stuff for when they are on the ground.
