On today's #NCFWhittle we are joined once again by Professor Doug Stokes, Professor of International Relations at the University of Exeter, and author of the new book "Against Decolonisation: Campus Culture Wars & The Decline of the West".
Following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, a moral panic gripped the US and UK. To atone for an alleged history of racism, statues were torn down and symbols of national identity attacked. Across universities, fringe theories became the new orthodoxy, with a cadre of activists backed by university technocrats adopting a binary worldview of moral certainty, sin and deconstructive redemption through Western self-erasure.
In his hard-hitting book, Prof. Stokes surveys these developments for the first time. He unpacks and challenges the theories and arguments deployed by ‘decolonisers’ in a university system now characterised by garbled leadership and illiberal groupthink. The desire to question the West’s sense of itself, deconstruct its narratives and overthrow its institutional order is an impulse that, ironically, was underpinned by a more confident and assured Western hegemony, which is now waning and under great strain. If its light continues to dim, who or what will carry the torch for human freedom and progress?

Do you believe in Christ Lord Jesus, the western countries believed in that, if Charles Darwin was alive today he won't believe his theory of evolution on the basis of know about human DNA we have today. When you abandon Christianity anything and everything takes over. Who created the red cross, William booth a believer in Christianity, how did nursing start? By a Christian woman called Florence Nightingale. You forgot your God and your history, then you get what you deserve, period. There is no rocket science in that.

Back in 1977 I gained a place at a Russell Group university to study Biological Sciences. I was a working class girl from a comprehensive. Within 2 weeks I knew I had made a mistake, it was like moving to another planet, these, I thought, are the people I would have to study and work with, the thought appalled me. I left at the end of the first year and joined a High Street bank, worked with my own but as I moved up the ladder found people just as inhuman as the students I had known 15 years before, so I left there too and became a mum. The elite are few, as you say, it is their minions in the bureaucracy that enable them who are contemptible.

Perhaps, but isn't it the *threat* of dismantling this new corrupt hegemonic traditionalism that could bring about the most change for a better democracy? It seems Google owns as much of GB as it does the US, as we are controlled by a pre-programmed algorithm from the second grade onward in both public and private schools, and as voters, we are limited in access to alternative views by a similar algorithm. The monopoly that exists to control Western thinking is preposterous in the extreme in my opinion, and there is no algorithm to identify those politicians who illegally dip into the pot.

This articulates our predicament very succinctly. It literally is the institutionalisation and rebranding of the historical hatred of the working class by the better off.
@Aengrod
@Aengrod Год назад
This is simply not true. Some aristocratic societies e.g. during the French empire or Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were supporting the working class. An example - during the French revolution there was a counter revolution in Vendée, a movement that was initiated by the so called 'working class' to save their King and Aristocracy, obviously they were brutally squashed by the apostles of 'Liberté, égalité, fraternité' and removed from history classes on purpose, and the 'Ancien regime' demonised to the extreme. As the matter pertains to the PLC, the neighboring countries literally wrote propaganda pieces, and fabricating stories of that country and society 'backwardness'. Obviously not mentioning continuous migration of serfs and peasants from Prussia and Russia to PLC precisely because the living conditions for the working class were light-years better than in those two countries. E.g. Russian tsardom actively tried to prevent russian serf, escape to PLC. There is quite good research/book on this topic: 'Peasant flight to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the eighteenth century' by Gornostaev. What the two examples above have in common, is that these countries/cultures were Catholic, where the culture enforced by the Church prevented an outright extreme exploitation of the working class. With the protestant revolution, obviously that 'check' was removed on purpose. Few centuries forward and you are where you are.
@austincromwell
@austincromwell Год назад
@@Aengrod just because there were some exceptions, it doesn't make it "simply not true". For example if some countries are ruled by monarchies, it doesn't mean republics don't exist. The topic of discussion focused on the UK where hatred by the elites and well off for the working class most definitely does exist. Your argument is a straw man.
@Aengrod
@Aengrod Год назад
@@austincromwell ah, but it is. The topic is 'the decline of the west', arguably of which UK is no longer member of arguably since 17th century (with the embrace of protestantism by the UK ruling elites). It is well known and understood (among serious academic scholars) that elites are formed by culture, which is formed by religion. UK needs to finally realise that it is a heretical society top to bottom. Its current predicament is of its own making.

I live in Exeter, i'm working class, and i can safely state that most people within Exeter now feel suffocated by the university. They've created a society whereby the people of Exeter no longer feel welcome in their own city. The university couldn't care less about the people of Exeter. The new student accommodation buildings are a hideous eyesore that most citizens resent deeply. The university have ruined their own campus by continually building high-rises on their own site and now they've ran out of space, but don't worry because they will find a way to eliminate the working classes from the council estates and then let the new students move into old council housing(i heard a rumour). Anyone who's seen the new student building opposite Exeter bus station will instantly hate it. We can't wait for it to be reduced to rubble. Which probably won't take long as the people building it said it wouldn't even last 100 years anyway. CHEAP AND NASTY. Exeter university is suffocating/killing the city they reside within.

1960s - 1970s: Hundreds of thousands of middle-class European CIVILIANS, then settled in Sub-Saharan Africa, have lost absolutely everything they had got through generations & generations of very hard work, when brutal DECOLONIZATION of some African territories took place! Those European CIVILIANS have lost their homes (and sadly, everything in them), their cars, their bank accounts money, their jobs, their commercial & industrial family businesses, their lands, their personal references & identity, their physical & mental health, and, last but certainly not least - and in so many cases! - even their own lives!... And yet, surprisingly or maybe not, in these times of WOKE madness, NO ONE is talking about this open wound, and REPARATIONS or compensations due to the EUROPEAN VICTIMS of the DECOLONIZATION OF AFRICA, whose assets were looted to the core by the African mobs - guided by their new marxist rulers - still is NO ISSUE for those who now are demanding "a fair treatment" for facts that happened so many centuries ago! This school of thought began in the 1930's in the Vienna School et al. This was the birth place of neo-liberalism. With the death of the Ottoman and European empires 'barriers/tariffs' were re-assed in purely economic terms. Central to all of this was the free flow of finance, commodities and people around the world. If a particular group of workers were earning 'too much' they would have their earnings reduced to the global average. Having recourse to the government or unionisation was problematic, so both of these bodies would be subjugated and made ineffective. THIS is the attack on the working-class in a nut-shell. They would become a 'nomadic' global commodity in the service of neo-liberalism. Politics and culture is always downstream from economics. The eradication of culture is an essential aspect of globalisation. Attached to nothing and belonging nowhere the human commodity is reduced to an exchangeable unit. It's an absolute obscenity that Universities are promoting this. One has to question where their funding comes from. Authoritarian Liberalism remains unquestioned in these halls of learning. Why?

Human Resources that have no connection with the country, culture who are then easily controlled to reduce costs and maximise profits and it’s happening all over the West. Having exported its Manufacturing East it now takes people from the East and South to service the service economy. To keep profits up they have to pay in work benefits to maintain the illusion of the proposition to immigrants and the working class. So we won’t be having any tax cuts soon and our borrowing will rise as the doors are left open. One thing is for sure the availability, accessibility and quality of those service will continue to head South in a room loop. I think part of the problem is atleast in my country that sosialization to this model of thinking starts in very early age and is 2 years of preschool +9 of primary school +3 of highschool+4 years of college. That is very long period of socialization. I think Ted Kachinsky wrote a good critique piece of the liberal left and why it's almost cult like. Despite being criminal he had an IQ of 167, his critique despite his deeds is a worthwhile read. Also there have been studies about creativity where most of two year olds start as creative geniouses but that percentage is just 2% when the same test is measured in college. The red pen teaches us how to think, the longer one sits to learn that, the harder it is to think outside the box. Then again to understand how the machine works one needs know about history, economics and psychology and have a wide variety of general knowledge of the society and how it functions. Most of the degrees go towards understanding one issue and having the latest top knowledge of that issue, but the person on top of their topic might not understand the broader picture as they've focused on one thing. Daniel Kahneman's book 'Thinking fast and slow' is an important book as it explains how our thinking is formed and how it is affected. Then lets add the social media which teaches us what opinions we should have through like systems and what we see through what algorithms promote. It is quite a mix of things. The saddest part is that in general these ideas that have been weaponized have bern bettering the society at one point. Then it turned overboard like we can see from cases like Brand. Yes, he was an obscene drug addict twenty years ago and indeed was quite horrible to women. But he has not been criminally charged but persecuted by media. Without due process these accusations remain as such and are from anonymous women. UK MP went ahead and asked platforms to demonetize him based on allegations. Rumble published that request. No matter how one looks at it, the once good movement meetoo is being abused and used in govermental over reach. One can just fathom what did they not like in Brand. To me it is quite obvioius that the anti-establisment voices are being targeted on purpose. Like Assange. That woman dropped her charges and there he sits in prison while Manning is already out of prison.

The government desiring to force people to spend £15000 that they haven't got, to buy a heat pump. The death penalty would be a weapon to be used by the elites against the working class. We also have a situation were the legal system has been arresting and charging people for silently praying, you think it is a good idea to leave these people, this system, our government to legitimately introduce the death penalty? It would be the MPs and other elites, who would really merit it, but they would use it against their enemies, and people who would wish to hold them accountable for their actions.

Of course western forms of knowledge suffuse our culture. Because this is a western culture. If someone wants to pursue alternatives, that is fine, but it doesn’t mean that they can impose it on a western society or even expect it to be given any support or representation within a western cultural milieu. If Aristotle’s Principle of Non Contradiction is acknowledged and effective within the thinking style of our culture, then merely to attempt to combine our thinking style with an alternative thinking style which does not reflect the Principle would lead de facto to the practical and logical effect of rejecting the Principle, and our cultural foundations, leading in consequence to domination by exotic cultural thinking styles and our colonisation by THEM. By the way, good luck with getting electricity to work or food on the tables without western thinking.

One of the big issues that we face nowadays is that government believes that it can control all aspects of our lives. This is often done from a good starting principle, that of helping people. However, it is a dangerous position to take, because it breeds a reliance on government intervention in the population - this then leads to power hungry agencies that take advantage of people's dependence on government/agency intervention to survive. What governments need to do is re-calibrate their reach into our lives, and instead they need to start to encourage people to behave more resiliently in controlling their own lives. Governments should limit their focus to those areas of society that either cannot help themselves, or where (like defence) individuals cannot act independently to provide a solution.

Doug Stokes was raised in Hackney, East London. He has the credentials of someone with a hugely diverse background of friendships and life experience. He explains the complex nature of the recent changes and power structures in Britain in a remarkable way. The thing I got out of this most was the confirmation that it is a fact that the REAL power in Britain is truly at least one step removed from the government. That the structures that control us are often told to do this or that by government (and the spin doctors see to it that there is a message put out there that looks acceptable to the electorate), but of course without even more groaningly deep layers of legislation, nothing much happens. And then sometimes more bad or ineffective laws are then passed to paper over cracks that do not address the underlying problem. So we see, for example, the completed capture of Education by people who have not business to be in the department, because all they have done is subvert it politically, remove teacher's judgement and accountability, and governments have not been successful in stopping this, causing a huge crisis and pressure on many good teachers who have to contend with the politicization of schools and universities.

I live in a city in the southern US, it sounds similar to London in that the most racially diverse and integrated neighborhoods are inhabited by the working poor to lower middle class. It's where you see the most interracial families also. The most liberal or 'Woke' neighborhood, when measured by voting, contains some of the most expensive real estate in the city. Upper middle class to extremely wealthy. Statistically, the southern US or 'MAGA country' is integrating far more quickly than the Northeast and West Coast. The south has the largest percentages of African Americans and a growing immigrant population. As Victor Davis Hanson has pointed out, these coastal regions have benefited the most from the offshoring of our industrial base and our new global economy. The most liberal voting districts and the most privileged and wealthy. Like the 'country club Republicans' of old, this new liberal elite is in control. I'm a liberal myself but the Democrats no longer reflect my values. Emphasis on the working class and holding up a colorblind society as a worthy goal. Instead, they're determined to fuel our tribal hatreds to maintain power.

It seems that Doug agrees with the privileging of ethnic minorities through quotas which were only ever intended for the descendants of slaves in the USA. We have dual nationals here who decided to come (or their family did) and who are already privileged over the native population. To calculate what proportion of Nigerian judges we should then institute global quotas and we would find that they are already represented by having taken every position in their own country. Even when non Whites are over represented here we still have schemes, money and quotas to promote them even further and this doesn't take account of the fact that J**s decide to suddenly become White for the purpose of quotas and if extracted the native Whites would be by far the most underrepresented. In addition certain roles should only go to those with one passport and dual nationals should not qualify for any position of political or legal authority. Doug seems to think we are only non racist if Whites are failing, whereas if others are failing even though as with Stormzy it may be due to poor decisions, lack of self discipline, obnoxious behaviour and lack of academic ability then we must engineer the situation to make sure they succeed like the present head of Jesus College Cambridge who studied there on a quota, then had a career arranged for her on the BBC, then help and funds to start her own unnecessary ridiculous charity/entrepreneurial state funded group (thousands of these farces exist) then funnelled into a job which back in the day would only have been offered to one of the world's greatest scholars.

I'm fed up with the whingeing working class. The truth is that the working class has never had it so good; it wasn't that many decades ago that working class people lived in slums with outside toilets. Now they buy four bedroom detached houses and BMWs. One of my neighbours has tattoos all over and speaks like an east end docker, yet he drives a beamer and lives in a four bed detached.

As a graduate from an Arts degree I felt much of tge course was about "feelings and woke causes". If you could hang meat off a hook, litter it with rubbish beneath it and connect it to a bunch of feelings you scored very highly. Equipment and materials were strictly guarded by stringent rules that discouraged practical skills development. Students who did well made woke issues the focus of their work. If you presented yourself as a victim, lectures loved it! The top students couldn't draw, paint, use media and materials well. I've since leaving uni, educated myself on various courses and self-application. My opinion is that universities just accept anyone on courses to increase income and have adjusted assessment to suit increased income. My course was littered with students who lacked creativity and skills but had a woke narrative. Of course, critical anaysis is part of the course, but there should be BALANCE. In retrospect, i wasted my money and really should have self-educated. Nobody wants my credentials, a woke story or self flagellating in my art. It sells because it is skillfully done.

fine arts education in Europe is all about networking and bullshiting. the craft out of the arts is snubbed and looked down upon as redundant and anachronistic. If there was ever a point and a scientific approach to art education and the material and processes involved it is completely neglected in our schools. I was aware of that even before i get my degree and even more so when i hit the market and start participating in exhibitions and galleries, but i never knew how much harm it has done to me until after i saw what people from a more traditional background from other parts of the world were doing. I attest that if your art is more important to you than social credits and laurels the solution is to set your own goals, self educate and if possible get off the gallery market and work free lance or with a small group of clients, provided that you can afford it. As a side note, i remember during my days of schooling and later in the galleries and museums, an overwhelming number of works involving all kinds of pulverized materials and dusts, ashes, sands, gravels. I used to think that it had more to do with the accessibility and ease of use of these types of materiel but the more i come to think about it the more i like to think that there is a psychological statement projected on these which has a lot to say about the structural integrity of our value system.

You got into the wrong place? There is so many art academy in which this isn't the case. Every school usually have portfolio and you can understand what you will study beforehand. The greatest problem maybe is that most of the exhibition and the culture noise is still revolving around the woke-liberal art, but you can just take this opportunity to distinguish yourself better.

@@LyubomirIko i obviously did. But to my defence, i did not know any better, had no guidance either, and i had allready spent most of my early 20s acquiring a degree on chemistry which i hated and had to serve in the military too. By the time i had the opportunity to enrol in the arts everything happened in a hurry because i was stressed for time. Having in my country essentially 1 fine arts school while the rest were considered trade schools did not help either. By the time i had my second degree i had a much clearer idea what i should have done but i figured i had no time to continue studying i wanted to start working. It’s all messed up but hey i came to realise that i followed the visual arts because i knew from early on that i wanted to be pretty much left alone and have control of my production processes, so it kinda worked out this way. Had i knew then what i know now i would beeline for Moscow Sorry for giving my life’s story as an answer.

@@EliasTsakmakis a lot of post-modern art is a critical social comment - It's properties of being nihilistic, destructive, repulsive and ugly aren't incidental or due to lack of ability to "beautify" the piece and idea. The strive of beautification have ended around post-impressionism, the viewer's ability to lift the veil of conventional ugliness and discover new beauty and meaning is quite interesting, sometimes a little demanding if you aren't conditioned. Nobody have stopped to create their own thing, just the language of expression in art have gone larger.
@LyubomirIko

@@EliasTsakmakis problem is, art - unlike let's say chemistry is not a fixated method, because it's you who have to create the elements and the atoms. There is simply not a single philosophy or method that will fit all. I was the reverse of you - the art schools in my country are directly influenced by the Russian academic education. And I was rather interested in digital and harsh electric arts, audio-visuals, glitch art. My younger me didn't fit there either - and the professor was dismissive of my computer strives. In the end even in this type of school it's again solely up to you to build some skills and visions. Remember impressionist? They were leaving and rioting the art academy as well, but because of the extreme conservatism. Van gogh is completely self-taught, and this is his charm - the unique perspective he was able to acquire.
