What a nightmare this was!! This is the second day of our passage sailing from Malaysia to Indonesia www.sailingnan...
In this episode, things take a drastic turn for the worse. After working so hard to escape the clutches, lockdowns and rules in Malaysia regarding travel, we are on our way to the next chapter in our lives and are on our second day of passage to Inodnesia. After 30 hours of glorious sailing we had made massive in roads on our 150 nautical mile crossing across the Malacca Strait. Then, in the middle of the shipping channel, surrounded by ships, things go horribly wrong.

Hi Guys, folding props are for around cans. They have too many moving parts to be reliable in offshore applications. Get a standard 3 blade lose .5knts and be happy in the knowledge it will always work.

Also with a fixed prop they can hook up something that charges the batteries as it slowly spins under sail.

I run a max prop on my C45. This is my worst fear. Well, prop failure and shaft seal/thru-hull failures are my worst fears. I carry the original fixed blade for emergencies just like this. I also carry a 3 gallon 110v oilless compressor and a 50-foot hooka rig. The compressor provides plenty of air to allow me to dive on my boat to clean the hull and conduct repairs. I wired wooden bungs to all of my seacock valves so they would be handy to pound in quick if needed. I also carry a 5hp gas-powered trash pump. Yes, it adds 100 lbs to my boat, but batteries short out when your bilges flood and your 12v auto pumps stop working. I have not had to use this pump on my boat yet, but I saved another guy's boat with it. It moves a huge amount of water and is portable. It took us a while to find failed ball valve.

Hi guys, you can't use a long tube snorkel like that, your breath is not enough to get clean air in and you just breath your own co2 back in. This could cause you to black out under water. Careful. Hope you get sorted. Fergal

It's some years ago that I did in fact read comments by someone questioning the durability, if that's the word, of feathering propellors. He made the point that until the early 1920s ship's screws had blades that were individually bolted onto a rotating hub. These had the unfortunate habit of sometimes, if not repeatedly, losing blades - thousands of which are littering ocean floors all over the world to this day. The Nederland Line, a Dutch company that operated services to the Far East for over a century, once complained about one of their passenger ships being a habitual "offender" having lost propellor blades something like 15 times in a 22-year career. The problem was eventually solved, of course, by making the blades an integral part of the whole propellor-and-hub casting. The questions asked in the comments I read a few years ago involved this: if a giant blade securely bolted on can still break off like a leaf in the wind, how safe are those feathering blades on so many yachts? How securely attached are they, really, in order to withstand the same forces that wrought havoc on giant propellor blades in the past? It seems it was a valid question.
