We get -30 celcius here in Sweden too, but part of the money from our high taxes goes to maintaining our roads :) As long as you pay for it there are always ways keep things nice and clean.

-30 celsius? I think you need to go further up north to find those low temperatures. Last time I can remember a winter being so cold so the temp could go close to - 30 was a long time ago. I remember the winter of -86 or 87 was really cold but I don´t think it got as low as -30

Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish police officers are helpful and it is part of the profession to be so. You mentioned that you were from the US and that speaks to how shocked you were. Because in the USA it takes between 6 and 9 months to become a police officer, depending on which state you attend the training. In the Nordic countries, it takes longer to train as a police officer. in Sweden it is 2 ½ years of education at university to become a police officer and after that you are a police aspirant for 6 months before you become a police officer. In Finland, Police Training is an academic police training for 3 years and you must achieve 180 points in the exam. In Denmark, police training is also 3 years, but here you do the police internship for 14 months before you become a police officer. in Norway it is like in Finland when it comes to police expansion, that is. academic police training 3 years and you must achieve 180 points in the exam. in Sweden, this is included in the training to become a police officer: Police training gives you knowledge about the role of the police in society, our regulations and methods. Theory is interspersed with practice, where a large part is about practicing your skills in police situations. You will learn to analyze problems, seek knowledge, see connections, find solutions, make decisions and evaluate your efforts. The studies include subjects such as law, criminology, nursing science, behavioral science, social work and political science. They are integrated with police subjects such as crime prevention work, criminal investigation, investigation into violent and drug crimes, interrogation and interview methodology, forensics, conflict management, IT and communication systems, road safety, police tactical driving and self-protection. Self-protection requires both fitness and a certain strength. Questions about human rights, ethics, values and treatment are integrated throughout the education period to raise awareness of norms and values. Great importance is placed on increasing your self-awareness and your ability to make well-balanced decisions in different situations. If a Swedish police officer behaved like an American police officer, there would be talk of being fired, the same applies to Finnish, Norwegian and Danish police officers. The police are there to help and protect the citizens. Politeness and calm behavior must be the police in the Nordic countries.

From my experience, they really enjoy helping people that are not victims of a crime. The officer helping the Dutch lady appears to be a sergeant, so that is a somewhat higher grade.

I was so shocked when I lived in the UK in the early 2000's and saw how dirty everything was. Still remember my outrage when I saw someone just throw trash from their car directly onto the road. We do get a lot of potholes in Sweden. They will fix important roads very regularly while some smaller roads might be quite an adventure to drive on - especially in the countryside up north. The water in Stockholm is quite clean nowadays and you can go swimming in the middle of the city (but not in the Stockholm stream or you'll drown).

As a Northern European(and mostly Swedish), the only person I've met that likes Lingonberries with pancakes/plättar, is my father(take his tastes with a grain of salt, he ate it on bloody pizza too). And even he doesn't really care to pick it before the most common strawberry/strawberry jam. But there's a good bit of variety with blueberry jam, queens jam, cloudberry jam, and raspberry jam. Cloudberry is my personal favorite, but I do think strawberry jam is the best suited. Cloudberry is also a bit expensive. Ligonberries are for black pudding, palt(could find no English word for it), and some meatball-based dishes. It really doesn't go well with everything, but it's indispensable for the dishes it is for.

She's in the middle of a big city. The big nearby places are fully booked, if you want help immediately you have to move away from the inner city, and into the more sparsely populated area's. Yet they seemingly make room for ppl like these on a time crunch.

Stockholm rarely gets colder than say -10 these days, when I was a kid it could get to -30 (Celcius). We're located at the same latitude as Alaska, but the Gulf Stream makes it a bit less harsh. That said, if you go up north, even just to the middle of the country, it can get pretty darn cold. But the roads are usually in good shape. Country dust roads have pot holes, but they are rare on highways and such.

Sweden is a high salary country, to keep a shop busy is more important than servicing every customer quickly as it would require more personnel. You will also notice that very little low salary service is offered and machines are used where plausible.

Air conditioning is not common in Sweden, our focus has been to build well-insulated houses that keep the heat in during the winter, and historically it has rarely been over 25 degrees Celsius, max a few days maybe a week for a whole year, so it has not been worth investing in AC

In Europe it's easier to spot a lost tourist because of the different country license plates. A biker riding an international bike, acting like they're looking for something usually can use some help. Her bike has NL on it so it's easy to know she's from the Netherlands. Bike shops are usually swamped in early summer, but most will make exceptions for non native riders since they're on a journey. Interesting fact about the yellow buildings is that the yellow muted pastel tones on the Stockholm buildings are a trace from a letter by royal architect Tessin and then King Karl XII sent to house owners in 1699 telling them to paint their houses in a yellow tint. The inspiration came from the French lime stone houses and everything French was all the rage back then, so they tried to imitate that. This has lived on and that's why you sometimes hear of royal l yellow. All the military buildings from this era were painted yellow no matter where in Sweden, and made them stand out and by color mark them as belonging to the King.

The changing of the Guard was at the Royal Palace, the King and Crown Princess work from there (while not travelling or working from home) but live in Palaces in the suburbs. The King and Queen in Drotningholm Palace and the Crown Princess familiy in Haga Palace (which is rather small for a palace).

18:39 it used to be the home of the King & Queen and always has been. but our current king decided to move out to Drottningholm's palace in 1981, which is not as central as Stockholm's palaces. He thought it was a better place for the children to grow up. So this is only a workplace for the king, queen, crown princess & her husband Prince Daniel.

It doesn't happen that often, but perhaps 6 months ago I was so drunk so I couldn't stand still, I could walk but I had to lean onto a wall to be able to stand. The police comes, and they ask me if I knew how to get home, pretty sure they'd driven me home had I said no (Malmö, Sweden). Oh and I had a very similar experience in Dublin, Ireland, where I was actually arrested but let go and driven to the place where I was staying

That might happen in Sweden as well if you are highly intoxicated. They wouldn’t leave you there if they deemed you unable to look after yourself. I had to call them once due to a teenage boy who hardly could stand upright without help. He wanted to take the bus home in the middle of the night. It was -15 °C and I didn’t want him to freeze to death in the snow. Police arrived within a couple of minutes. The officers gave him a ride home to mom and dad. The initial plan was to take him to a cell for the night because he just had turned 18 and technically was an adult but he got extremely sad when he realized that, so they changed their plans and handed him over to his parents.
