We used Anytype to test this ultra-popular note-taking method pioneered by Tiago Forte. If you're looking to implement PARA in a private, local-first workspace, here we explained how to do it in Anytype terms. Join us for a step-by-step walkthrough of how we did it, plus our review of using this approach!
If you want to try PARA for yourself, you can import the template demonstrated in this video from this link: doc.anytype.io...

Hello, just want to say that I may have run into a couple of limitations or slight difficulty in choosing what exactly the type should be, but I must say it is still quite a flexible software. It is so refreshing to see the creators showing how they use it or what are the possibilities. Enjoying the videos a lot. Thanks so much!

I don't like these pre-built types that are impossible to delete. It sounds arbitrary with the user.

I'm using a similar system but opted for sets instead of collections for the PARA categories. I'm not sure which is better, but I'm starting to feel Anytypes limitations. The linking is very cumbersome and not intuitive. Also, your system will eventually require additional filters/sorting as you add more objects (primarily to the resources category). You're also missing an important factor to the system, the objects within an area either need to be categorized as projects or resources. That means you need a way to link these to a relevant area and also be able to show them on the area itself. I'm currently doing this with inline sets but the overall linking system in Anytype needs more work and makes it difficult. We at least need a way to see (and even filter by) an objects backlinks. We also need bi-directional object relations like notion has. These would make it easier to link objects together.
@Anytype
@Anytype 11 месяцев назад
Hey, thanks for your comment! I ran into a lot of the same difficulties you mentioned; started with sets as you've done, but realised that some object types cannot be changed, and would therefore be excluded from the query. I suppose I could have tried organising everything with a tag system, but without a good way to manage my tags right now, it seemed collections were my next best option. They're way more flexible in allowing for linking/adding objects, the main problem is that everything needs to be manually linked & unlinked, which is indeed really cumbersome. Also agree that object backlinks become essential in this kind of system - the best attempt I made was adding relations: 'linked projects'/'linked areas'/'linked resources' to every set & collection, but this got confusing very quickly. We hope to ship the first version of backlinks this year, hopefully that will ease up some of these issues 😁

@@Anytype Thanks for the response. Anytype has a lot of potential but it's just not there yet, it's missing too many basic features and the timeline to get them seems a ways off. Here's just a few examples: - Backlinks (how is this missing?) - A counter for how many objects are in a kanban column or any other view for that matter (how many rows do I have in my table... who knows!) - Bi-directional object relations - The ability to edit and remove default types and relations - Files as full objects - Filtering sets by "or" not just "and" logic - Self-pointing filters for templates

The first thing I did when I understood how AnyType works was 1) delete everything 2) Create Bookshelf hierarchy: Bookshelf: Container of books Book: Container of Topics Topic: A page containing information Example: School --> Math --> Functions Example2: Personal --> Dreams --> Dream1 |--> ToDo --> Today Now, AnyType definitey needs better filtering for the graph view but otherwise I've found this to do everything I need

I quite like this way to organize all the stuff, but I don't understand why you changed all the objects that in a PARA catagory, like area, into type area, is it necessay? as long as it's collection, it doesn't matter what type that object is, right?
@Anytype
@Anytype 11 месяцев назад
Hi! You are totally right, it isn't necessary to have a type. Somehow for me it felt more comfortable to open an object and see which category it fell into (project / area / resource), which is why I gave it a type. I could have also used tags to achieve this, but when I tried this approach, it felt too easy to forget to tag the objects (whereas it is always necessary to give my objects a type). Now, when I use type: page/note etc. the object usually fall under an area, like 'diary entries' or 'German practice' for instance.

Hi, thank you for the beautiful video! How did you export your entire personal space and, most importantly, make a new personal space at 2:12? Are you forced to log out and create a new account for each personal space?
@Anytype
@Anytype 11 месяцев назад
Hi! To export your space, you can click the 'space' settings button and export your entire account in JSON or Protobuf. Then, I actually logged out and hit 'join' again to create a new account with a new recovery phrase, and imported the previous account. But! In our next release we're bringing multi-spaces, so you won't need to use a new recovery phrase - you'll be able to add and delete different spaces in your account :)

I'm struggling a little with Lists, and how to make sure every object I add to a list has the right relation. I created the Areas collection. Then I created a new Area called "Coffee" for all my coffee experimentation, tracking recipes for specific beans, etc. So I created a new object type called "Coffee Bean". Then, on the page for my "Coffee" area, I tried creating a new set based on the object "Coffee Bean". I create new objects in the set, and I can see the set of various coffee beans. Fine. But, when I go to the graph view, whatever Coffee Bean objects I added to via the set are just orphaned in the graph. The list itself automatically shows a relation to the Coffee area, but the beans are not related to anything. If you go search all objects and open the individual Coffee Bean items, you have to trace to show that this was created in the Coffee area. I don't see a way to, by default, say that every coffee bean object will be related to the area "Coffee". Do you just have to manually "link" them every time you add a new bean to the set?
@Stan_sprinkle
@Stan_sprinkle 7 месяцев назад
maybe I just figured out a solution: in my custom Template for "Coffee Bean", added a "link to existing object", where I link it to the "My Beans" set that lives on my Coffee area page. I'm happy with it being hardcoded to always link to this list. Not sure if it's the best way, but seems to work

Thanks for all of this, it is exactly what I need. However, when you take the actions you are discussing, you go way too fast for me [and I assum other newbs] to get much good out of the video. As such I spend too much time setting up the system and not getting work done. Is there any way you could slow down your actions so I could see how you are doing what you are talking about? Just having new screens pop up just adds more questions. Or, have someone else make a more detailed video or blog. For example, at the very start you mention 'Space' 2 or 3 times, but then open a new account? Does the data go to a space or yet another anytype account? Please dont hate me ... Good work on the update!
@Anytype
@Anytype 10 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks of your feedback! We will work on making additional tutorials with slower walkthroughs of basic actions. The recording was done before the multi space update, this is why it was necessary to create a new account in order to utilise a new space. Now it's possible to simply export your space, create a new one, and import it again.

The division Archives and Resources doesn't make sense, in PARA Method.
@Anytype
@Anytype 11 месяцев назад
Do you mean the method itself or how we've explained it in the video? For me, 'archive' seems mainly relevant for projects and sometimes areas - resources are less likely to be 'archived' unless they're related to a specific project with an end date.

@sdnnvs
@sdnnvs 11 месяцев назад
@@Anytype Sorry for the misunderstanding. Charlotte's explanation of Tiago Forte's PARA method is perfect. My criticism is regarding the classification between Archive and Areas of the method itself. Basically, it is a philosophical question. If the purpose of Archive is analyzed as a kind of done, in a GTD system, projects, in which something must be buried, extinguished, to make way for something new, it makes sense, for the purpose of managing time and resources. But in a creative PKM, where past experiences can be reused in the present and future, there would never be a useful function for a definitive archive of ideas, experiences and facts. So, better explaining my understanding, for those who use a PKM for creativity, serendipity, saying that something will be archived forever and will never be reused, doesn't make sense, and is better understood as something pending in Areas.
@ri9164
@ri9164 11 месяцев назад
@@sdnnvs Well its nice I think in the very least to separate Areas and completed tasks. So when one clicks Areas, there are all these different categories, versus a hodgepodge of Areas and archived documents. And in the PARA video, he says he has it in Archive so it's searchable and still easily accessed, but it isn't exactly an Area that would need to be accessed as frequently.

I can personally say that this video was really impressive and although I've been using anytype for over a year now, trying to optimize everything, it was a breath of fresh air and I learned a lot from your organization. I think if Any team can keep producing this kind of quality videos in the future, more and more people would feel welcomed and less threatened to switch since I've been reading a lot of reviews and comments from people who felt confused by all the capabilities of Anytype. I for one can't still make sense of "collection" and how I can properly leverage its functionalities in my system since I've heard and read a lot that Collection is the single most powerful feature of Anytype. Anyway, great work!

I was testing multiple apps to pick one for my personal knowledgement and I really loved Anytype. But right now I can't pick it cause of 2 things: - If an object has backlinks, inside of it we can only show the list of backlinks but not the context around where they were mentioned - We can't exclude some particular objects from the graph like in obsidian I'm sad and hoping these will change later

Thank you for this great tutorial ! It helps to understand this fabulous and promising software. Just as a personal input, I don't feel helpful for me to create types "Project", "Area" or "Ressource". I prefer to work with sub-collections instead of Types. In example, to have a sub-collections "My project XYZ" linked to my main collection "PROJECTS" or "Finance education" sub-collection linked to my main collection "AREAS" and so on (maybe I'll change my mind in the future as I imrove my understanding of Anytype). For the Archives, I love the idea of a set filtered on a the Tag "Archive" :)

Isn't this like ditching the fundamental concept of types of this application? 2:37: The first three categories - projects, areas, and resources - could be formatted as collections. Collections felt like the most suitable object type because I needed an easy way to add any object, regardless of the type, to one of these categories - similar to the way folders work on your computer.
@Anytype
@Anytype 8 месяцев назад
Hi! The reason I didn't use types is that some of Projects, Areas, or Resources could include Sets & Collections - so filtering according to types wouldn't be possible. However, if one uses the app for strictly note taking, it would probably be easier to format the P/A/R as sets filtering for the respective types.
