Summer of 2019 I was miserable, unhealthy and in a rut. Saw your channel and remembered how much I loved sailing in my teens. Moved onto a boat. Loved it and got a bigger boat. Met my future wife at the marina. Your channel inspires and changes lives.

I am sure it is hard, because she is an architect and designer just like Dan, and they both seem to understand equally and enjoy doing the work. Also, even though it is just as much of importance, I am sure it is hard for her to let Dan do a lot of physical labor while she is masterminding the videos.

I admire the two of you so much. I am somewhat new to your channel and have been watching past episodes also. You have taken your experiences and research to take care of yourselves and your boat. Instead of buying bigger and better and tossing away the old, you are reinventing the old to adapt to the future. By the way, you are doing a great job. You look at problems and figure out how to fix them. You guys are so much more than a sailing channel without even trying just by being you.

You can learn as you go. But it sure is a better idea to start with a sailready boat so you can learn gradually every time you want or need to fix something instead of falling head first into a years long nightmare of a project boat. Start out easy, it'll be worth it.

These guy's have opted to do this the hard, hard way 😂 you don't have to do all this .. Start smaller and with something that might just need bits of maintenance rather than a back to the bare hull rebuild. And don't forget there's wood and metal hulls depending on your skills ..

What you are doing to rebuild and redesign Uma is something that will hopefully inspire others to rebuild aging boats. Many boats built in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’. these popular boats often have excellent hull shapes and great sea keeping capabilities. Thank you Kika and Dan for giving new life to a very good old boat. 😊
@CJSHM
@CJSHM 3 месяца назад
Not to mention that many have hulls that are already way more durable than the rubbish being pumped out by consumer brands now. My old CS27 has a centimetre of uncored glass, whereas new Beneteaus are so flimsy you can make them flex with a single finger. No thanks.
@mikequinlan9585
@mikequinlan9585 3 месяца назад
I agree, I got into sailing in the early 1980’s and many of the smaller products boats were better. There are many reasons for this, but suffice it to say, more people in the USA were buying small and mid-size sailboats. Larger sales made for stronger competition and builders responded by building boats with tried and true hull shapes and equipment. I am not suggesting all old boats are good but most builders were using molds that were well known for good sailing characteristics.

Dan, I wanted to cry for you when the resin tray blew over. You were sooooo much cooler than I would have been. Question: Could you have used Peel Ply instead of black plastic on the underside of the V-Berth hole? Love you guys! Be well. ❤
@tom-erikjohansen456
@tom-erikjohansen456 3 месяца назад
Yeah peelply would have solved this issue for the most part. Polyester reacts with plastic and it will make the plastic crumble like that and make those marks.
@sailing_seaescape

I had that sticky polyester layer all the time using unwaxed resin with plastic film until I changed the film with parchment paper. Now it is always flat and cured from this side. The only problem is keeping parchment paper in place. I used duct tape that can at least hold the edges.
@RichardUS8
@RichardUS8 3 месяца назад
Plastic film is not a good material to laminate on as the exotherm will cause it to shrink and do screwy things with your final result much better to use a shiny hard surface like formica melamine Plexi fiberglass shower panels ABS plastic many different things will work then using part all or Carnauba wax your layup can come off with a finish that needs minimal prep

Dan, the Polyethylene bag on under side is not a good choice. The styrene in the resin gets absorbed into it causing it to swell and wrinkle up . Then you get air voids inhibiting the cure. Better choice is ‘Mylar film’ as it doesn’t absorb the styrene.But It is less flexible too. Cheers Warren

All this re-inforcement, sealing up the hatches, I suspect the next thing will be some foils and a swing keel. Then you will have the 'Pearson Wave Blaster', super cruising speeds, a modified 90 degree swing keel with counter flotation providing super shallow draft. Or perhaps you'll upgrade to a Class 40!
