Make your own feeder with the fence panels. The 2”x4” openings keep them from pulling out too much hay. Making a trough under the feeder to catch the falling hay is also helpful. As you’ve probably discovered, once hay touches the ground it’s poisonous. Apparently. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
Thanks!!! That's a great idea. We have extra bits of the 2"×4" we could do that with. That would have also prevented them from getting their heads stuck when they were smaller.

The hack to attach the t post to the shed is incredibly helpful!! We will be getting Nigerian Dwarf goats decently soon and I was planning on putting the shelter at the edge of the run but was struggling to think of a way to keep the goats from trying to push past the t posts on either side. What a great idea!!

Something I read about is to get the minerals up off the ground and in a sectioned feeder hanging on the fence or whatever your feeding station is because goats don’t like to have their head down to eat. They are foragers, so anything at eye level and above. Also with a sectional feeder you can put baking soda in one part, other minerals in the other parts. One other thing I read about is wood stains and paints are poisonous to goats. Hope this helps. 😊

Just listened to a fello on u tube, talking about hay that has been sprayed with herbicides killing garden plants and bushes, even after being composted and also in form of manure. apparently clears animal in 1 to 2 days, if fed untreated untreated hay and pasture. can remain in feed and pasture up a year.

You have it nice living in the city. I’ve had my Nigerians I’ve had 5 of them for a year then we got babies now we have a total of 11 where did you get your babies from are they Registered and show quality. I haven’t shown mine yet. I’m new at this.
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
I got them from Left Foot farm. I think they're pure bred but I haven't gotten around to doing paperwork yet to get them registered. I consider them more pets and won't be showing them or building a herd while we live here. I will breed one of them at some point mostly because I want the experience and want to learn how to make my own goat cheese.

Place a cover over the hay feeder or use some chicken wire and raise it so it will hold more but not allow them through the top.

what do the neighbors think of the goats ? do you live in the city?. I live in Washington state also, outside of the city but in city limits. we got chickens and rabbits but thought about the same type of goats you have.
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
They don't seem to mind (as far as I can tell). We invited the ones right next to us to come over and play with the goats and they loved it. They were louder when they were younger and are quieter now. When we first got them, kids in the neighborhood would pop their heads over the fence and go "baaaaaa!" at the goats to get them to respond.
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
I feel like the goats are less smelly than chickens and they don't start squawking early in the morning to be let out.

Yeah, they were especially loud when they were little babies, but now they mostly only yell if they see me. Our neighbors haven't complained yet! The neighbor kids sometimes will pop their heads over the fence and yell baaa at them to get the goats to baaa back.

Where did you get the fence panels ?
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
I got them from a local co-op: www.co-opsupplyinc.com/marysville/ But they're the same as these. www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/horse-fence-panel-5-ft-x-16-ft 5 foot tall, 16 feet wide, 2×4 in opening. Smaller openings since they can get caught. Once they're full sized, 4 feet might not be tall enough. We used 6 feet tall T-posts and might reinforce where they like to rub up against.

Nice! I'm guessing Alderwood mall here in Wa.? .... Cool I'm watching your video. I was thinking about going to Left Foot farms! So I think that's a sign. Curious,What was the cost per doe? And are they ever loud at night? Thanks
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
The does were $350. Honestly, it took a while to get them from Left Foot Farms. The Northwest Goats has a lot of goats for sale, including registered Nigerian Dwarf Goats. facebook.com/groups/163475833805767/
@jannawebbon67

Left Foot Farms does have farm stays which could be cool especially to see what their set up is and learn some goat chores. And yes, referencing Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood. I just think it's very funny to name my tiny backyard farm after a suburban mall.
@jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
They are actually quieter than our chickens were. When the goaties were very lil, they did cry quite a bit especially when they saw us through the windows. I think they get loud again when they're in heat. In general they aren't very talkative at night and bleat more during the day if they want our attention.

@@jannawebbon67 Thanks a bunch for fast reply and the FB recommendation. Looks like it will be a great source for finding 2 or 3 Doe sometime soon. Looking forward to it. @jannawebbon67
@jannawebbon67 2 года назад
@@1luckystrike I haven't had any issues with them escaping from the enclosure. When I open the gate, they always try to run out and then sometimes I have to lure them back inside with alfalfa. They like to rub their backs along some of the panels, so I'll probably reinforce those with an extra T post each. I hope you find some nice does!

@@kellykaus4039 Yes, 5 foot fence with 6 foot t-posts. They've never gotten over the fence. They're still about half size. I'll probably need to move away chairs from the fence so they can't use those to jump over when they get bigger.
