I love how you pull no punches with this review. 👍 This book -I have not read it, nor do I intend to- is quite popular, it takes guts to express your strong opinion like you did with this video. Love it.

Many thanks, Bart! I do want to always strive to be honest even when I have an unpopular opinion. I'm also not attacking the author or people who like the book which is key. Thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to watch!

Huzzah A! You have created another excellent review. You manage to clearly explain your position and response to this book without in any way spoiling the plot. Your exasperation with Our Share of Night is merited. It starts with promise but becomes a frustrating waste of time. I'm sure there are better books in the offing. Thanks v much, B

Thank you, B, for your continued kind words! I very much look forward to providing happier reviews in the future! Nice to know I'm not the only one who felt a 2 star and justified in this case. Hope to see you in the next one and be well!

I’m surprised you didn’t DNF it after meh March. 😂 I’ve never DNF’d a book, so I can understand pushing through until the end. Our Share of Night is not a book I would naturally have picked up. After hearing your review, I will never read it. 😂😂😂 Terrific review, Alex! 🎉 And, I love your shirt. 😊

I really should have DNFd it, Kat. But I was taking so long with everything going on to get through even small chunks that had I just put it down, I would have wasted 3 weeks of my life with nothing to show for it 🫠 So I pushed through 👊 Not with any great satisfaction but at least I made it! "Insigificant Events in the Life of a Cactus" is the best thing I've read in 2 months! So thanks for that little nugget of joy! And thanks for the compliment on the shirt! I'm really embracing the beautiful weather 😌

@@alexfrankfiction Yeah, I totally understand your reason for not DNFing. I don’t DNF books because of time investment and because I own the book. I feel like I spent the money, I need to read it. 🤣 Thankfully, I have only a handful of books that I’ve had to trudge through.

Ahhhhh….I borrowed this book from the Library and read the first hundred pages and loved it. So I bought it. I never got around to picking it back up. Probably for the best😂 I do love the cover. I’ve tried twice to read House of Leaves and failed. Maybe third time lucky and I’ll ‘get it’… super review👍

I also loved the cover! The original Spanish cover is even better if you can believe it! Who knows, Anthony? Maybe you will love the rest of it too! I just couldn't. Though if you're struggling that much with House of Leaves, maybe not LMAO Have a lovely day!

What a devastating review, I feel a bit bad for recommending it. 😅 Sounded like we haven't read the same book. At no point was I under the impression that child abuse was portrayed as okay, quite the contrary ... which part gave you that impression? The central horror in this IS the child abuse, like you said, and it just gets worse and worse. At no point is it framed as okay... But I'm not a horror reader and maybe that's an explanation for the wildly different takes we have. Take care and looking forward to your future videos! ❤
@alexfrankfiction
@alexfrankfiction 5 месяцев назад
Hello, my friend! I'm sorry this ended up being a review that ragged on a book you recommended. I hope that won't prevent you from recommending books in the future! I appreciate your take, and the part of the message that felt like the abuse was at least a little condoned is how we get the explanation later on that Juan was carving a sign into Gaspar in order to hide him for the Order therefore performing a "good" deed for the benefit of his son. It's also explained that Juan is remorseful of the fact he will have to hurt Gaspar in order to accomplish the spell and that he wishes Gaspar didn't have to hate him but that it was probably for the best in order to keep him safe. When we are only from the perspective of Gaspar in the 3rd section and we see how Juan treats him, it's appalling. Later we hear from Rosario's side and see that Juan loved Gaspar and wanted him to have a normal life creating a sympathy for the situations Jaun put Gaspar into. That made it feel still terrible but as if the author was saying "See Juan loves Gaspar the most and will do anything to protect him from having the same fate. Isn't that a good thing?" At least that was my take on it and how I felt about it. Totally respect if you disagree.

@@alexfrankfiction Aha! The old question of: was it the author or the character talking! I took all of that as an expression of how messed up everyone, and especially Juan, is. He is so twisted by the abuse that he doesn't understand how he is now passing it on while believing he's doing it out of love. From all her books I get the impression that Enriquez is deeply distressed by what we do - and let happen - to children, because she brings it up again and again. Such an interesting discussion, I love it when books make that happen!
@alexfrankfiction
@alexfrankfiction 5 месяцев назад
Truly! And I absolutely see what you mean! I haven't read any of Enriquez's other works, so I definitely think you have a leg up on me there. I too am distressed by what happens to both children and animals. That's why it was so sad to read from the perspective of Gaspar. Wonderful points! Thank you!

Great review (until you had to throw House of Leaves under the bus as well😀) I had a bad experience with Things We Lost in the Fire. Your experience with this one sounds a bit like my experience with her follow up.

We shall forever have differing opinions of House of Leaves! I don't plan to read anything else by her after Our Share of Night. Bummer to hear her other big novel was similar for you, though. Do you plan to read anything else by Mariana Enriquez?

My Gay and lesbian friends did not like or really understood the book. It was on a list for glbtq book nomination but never won anything. They said it was political mindset with horror elements that did not relate and had weird tags. I didn’t read it probably never will. My circle of Science fiction readers are reading 2 series starting at book 1 of each. The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin and Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Both are dystopian science fiction horror stories with odd twist making select things less horrifying and interesting while making the mundane lovecraften scary. Highly recommend both series.

@@alexfrankfiction I actually already read all 3 original books but not in English. In an intro to mandarin class of all things. Only the first book was in English at the time and the teacher thought we would pick up Chinese faster but reading an advanced book in another language. After a year and a half I picked up more cursing than actually words because curse words don’t change in any context. Currently in the middle of the first book and already see a lot of translation differences. I am planning to read the 4th book after I am done the original series.

@@joshportal2808 fascinating that you read the Chinese copies! That's really impressive 👏

@@alexfrankfiction It was not really impressive. Imagine teaching kindergarteners how to read by using Jurassic Park as their first book. The teacher thought the new generation had ADD and would have a hard time paying attention. Ironically it was college class so everyone there wanted to be there and everyone paid full attention. The problem was that the teacher kept forgetting it was an introduction to Chinese and not an advanced class. We were still learning the basics on grammar and sentences structure and the alphabet. Imagine reading alone to an advanced book you did not even understand the language. What is funny is that we remember parts of the story when the political undertones came into play. In English it doesn’t show the anti Chinese Communist Party language. There are some hints in English but what we read compared to how we were taught show a lot. Also most people that teach Chinese are either anti CCP or pro CCP. It explains why the book series and the Netflix series are both banned in China. The ETO is majority funded by the Chinese Communist Party in the original Chinese version. I don’t know where it is stated in the English version.

@joshportal2808 that provides a lot of context. You may not have been starting out with the right difficulty of book for your lessons but you certainly learned about cultural significant and recall it. So that in itself is impressive 😊
