Talk to a farmer when he is bailing wheat straw. You should be able to get him to bale a tighter bale for you . I built my straw bale work shop 20 years ago stays at least 15 degrees cooler in summer and and never got below 40 during the winter. Use a small ac 6000 btu for maybe an hour a day when working in it. Use a small electric heater in winter to knock chill off . Don’t have any windows so that helps with temp control. Figure since I am using power tools don’t need to be looking out a window.

Please can you tell us how you built the foundation for this shed? Railroad ties and gravel in between? Did you attach the RR ties across and how did you attach them to each other and what went under them (if anything)? We are on DG so that could make for a good underfoundation, maybe.

Thanks for watching! It turned out great ( IMHO ). Check out our previous build, the Solar Shed for more ideas. We used some different building techniques in that one. We're very happy with both buildings and we have started our Strawbale House build as well.

Possibly you covered this on a previous video, but isn't there a big difference in "straw" bales and "hay" bales? As I understand it HAY bales have nourishment value for horses/cattle....AND rats/mice. STRAW bales are mostly hollow grass stems, with minimal food inside the grass stems....less mice attraction. I've read it is sometimes more difficult to find true STRAW bales. I researched bale houses years ago, but never tried building one.

@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! No, the railroad ties are pinned together with 1/2" rebarbut there is no additional footing. Been almost 2 years and no signs of movement or settling whatsoever.

Interesting decision, I thought straw was only used for housing because of its insulating properties, is it really the cheapest option?
@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 11 месяцев назад
At the time of our bale purchase, it was the least expensive option available that just the two of use could physically handle. Other building techniques might have been cheaper but the physical effort ( think hyper Adobe) would have wiped us out!
@maneuschwander6394

Hope you arranged for a Truckload delivery - when you started your house. That is some expensive straw at $9.00/ea - a pickup load at a time.
@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 3 года назад
That 9 bucks was a fantastic price in our part of the country. In fact I negotiated it down from $11 a bale. And right now, it's even more expensive than when we bought our bales. All depends on the season as you know.
@maneuschwander6394

Is the straw hay or rice?
@theupsideofdownsizing
@theupsideofdownsizing 3 года назад
The bales are wheat straw and for that build, they actually came from California. The shafts are amazingly thick which made for very dense and stable bales, bit made it difficult to get the first coat of Earthen Plaster to stick.
