It's a pleasure watching the new horses, even though it's tough hearing & seeing them sort out herd dynamics. I realize, it's reality, that's what they do. You could hide all the "drama" from those viewers who aren't familiar with horse behavior, but then you wouldn't be true to who you are, real people doing real farming, real life. Thanks for keeping things real. I imagine as viewership increases, it's tempting to change your filming to please new viewers. As a newbie tubey host myself, I hope you stay true to your original reasons for starting your channel, it's a joy to watch you both (& your daughters.)

That was amazing to watch! 😃 I could almost hear Ken telling Earl, "I'm high horse here and you're the low horse. Our positions are set in stone. We don't need to get involved. We're going to stay out of it while Duke and Barron battle it out for 2nd & 3rd position" 🤣🤣 I just love Kenny. He has the kindest eyes but he won't take any Guff off the youngsters 😁 That's a leader.

Oh ouch, when Duke thumped Baron in his throat, I felt that through the TV screen. Whooo, that was painful to watch. Baron and Earl definitely look like brothers. But when they were out in the field "duking" it up, I couldn't tell them apart. Poor Ken decided to be referee because he and Buck already had their time with Baron!😘 Congratulations to the winners of Baron's weight!! Hope you all can have some dry days for that hay Jim cut several days ago to dry out before it gets moldy. You've definitely had an abundance of rain up there. Have a great weekend!👋

These fine horses are just out in the pasture doing horse things. A horse can take a horse kick without issue, & the only thing faster than a horse kick is a horse reaction. They are establishing pecking order. This is just how horses communicate with each other.

She captured Beautiful colors up there in upstate NY. Requests please? a. More insider farming tips from Jim. e.g. cutting hay at different time frames. b. Definitely interested with your horse drawn equipment. Perhaps a new series? on the mechanical parts and how the parts move for example on your mower. I find the simple implements fascinating. Simple questions. I went looking for answers on internet did not find al ot. When first meeting the horses went face to face. I read that they smell each others nostril to know each other. Then smell each others their hind quarters. What about Baron taking a knee, then the other horse took a knee. Seemed they were excepting each other. Internet: When horses approach each other, they say "hello" by touching noses and sniffing.

It's interesting how Ken has been keeping Earl away from Baron and Duke, letting them sort out the hierarchy. I guess "Uncle Ken" already knows that Duke is more dominant and is telling Earl to stay back and watch. Horse dynamics are pretty interesting especially between 3 young stallions and a dominant older gelding. Good boy Ken, for keeping those shenanigans under control, or at least trying to.

Not being a knowledgeable "horsey" person, it was an eye opening video to see your horses reacting they way they did amongst each other !! Let's hope and pray they settle down really SOON and just get along !! I take it that is quite normal among young horses. Is that what you call sibling rivalry ? I was hoping that Jim would give us more details of this sort of behavior among horses. I KNOW I wouldn't want to get in a fight with one of your horses, Jim !! I'm more of a lover, not a fighter !! Tee Hee !! Otherwise, it was a great video, Jim and Brenda !! 😊
@exrobowidow1617
@exrobowidow1617 2 года назад
@@johnking8679 Yes, it is normal behavior. It's also normal for puppies and kittens. Kittens tend to grow up and leave each other for a more solitary life, but dogs, horses, and humans continue living in groups and getting in fights. This is why it's a good idea to have stallions gelded once they reach full size, so they will be calmer and more manageable (unless you intend to breed them). Not only young males, but any horses will fight and bicker, especially any time someone decides to challenge someone else's rank in the herd. I once saw a mature mare get moved to an unfamiliar pen, then someone moved a smaller stallion into the pen next to her. They immediately started arguing (like the neighing noises in this video). For some reason, there was no water barrel in the stallion's pen, but the mare's water barrel was in the corner next to his pen. So she made a show of drinking her water to prove it was hers, and to prove she was dominant. He tried to get his head between the bars, but he couldn't reach her water. They also tried pawing at each other through the bars of the pens. I've also seen videos of horses having grazing competitions when they got tired of biting and kicking.

Testosterone poisoning, I always say! Also, the kick that Jim gave Lady a few days ago to get her back up on her feet was *nothing* compared to the kick Earl(?) gave Barron at 9:25. And Barron just shrugged it off! I'll be the first to admit that I can't tell one horse from the other, so I could be wrong with the names. If so, I apologize. Thanks for all your hard work!

When my family had a boarding stable the horses always stood as close to the house as possible. We never gave treats at that end of 3 different paddocks so they weren't begging. I thought they were spying on the people, pain and simple. Even if we didn't hand out goodies people came and went, vehicles came and went. Funny as it was, they stood in the hot sun to watch us when the other end of the paddocks had nice roomy shade. So, just like with your currently muddy spot, the ground in the paddocks toward the house was bare of grass and muddy when wet. For some reason cows and horses think we are worth watching!
@Peter-gi3re
@Peter-gi3re 2 года назад
From what I have seen on some other channels with horses it might have been a good idea to have put Baron in a field adjacent to the others for a day at first to get over the initial nonsense where they can’t get to fight each other. Then gradually get them together. They definitely can inflict some serious damage to each other. I was glad to see you pick up those sticks …… right before you actually did it I was thinking it would be a good idea. When the horses are having a go at each other they are definitely not paying much attention to where they step and could easily damage a hoof. Also, in that muddy paddock next to the building there are some broken concrete block and some rocks that they could stumble on. Hopefully by now the colts have all worked out their pecking order and don’t beat up on each other so vigorously.

Your filming with or without good audio had my heart pounding watching every second to see what happened to the horses. It was amazing that Ken seem to know what was needed for a fair fight. Ken must pay attention to the younglings knowing how they react together. Understanding how to introduce a new horse to the packed without the younglings double teaming Baron. Seemed Ken handled the situation until they had tired out some. Amazing, just so natural. God's Creation working in tandem with God himself. Horses earning their keep almost provided for themselves by mowing the grasses and Ken watching over the introductions. Jim knowing who had to meet and except the new horse first, etc.

We also live in western Oregon & since midnight we have had .86 " rainfall! Our grass field for our horses looks just like yours! Wet , soggy & damp. The front of our barn INSIDE the doors has 4" to 6" of muddy water. We also have 3 stallions on our thoroughbred farm. The two 1/2 brothers sometimes open the front doors of the barn & also play rough but never really harm each other. They just race each other in the front of the farm along the county road (on our side of the fence of course), scaring the dickens out of our other local farmers when the 2 of them pass their trucks playing & running with each other. Your sickle bar mower gives us ideas of mowing our main field using real horse power instead of $5+ gallon Ford 8N horsepower. Our thoroughbreds would have more than enough power, especially our Seattle Slew line sire as he has strength enough to easily break down 2" X 12" barn walls as well at times 6" wood fence posts! Enjoy watching your horses & equipment.

Jim, thanks for tips on cutting back field 1/3 @ a time. As newer draft/land owners, we need all the tips we can get. Totally of video subject, but Brenda, as one "older" lady to another- love that your letting the grays alone & not coloring over them. It's been so difficult hearing other women ask why don't I color my gray hair. Nice to know I am not alone. It looks great on you. I haven't seen your hair down before watching this video, it's very becoming. I think the Bible says "a woman's hair is her glory," or something similar. At age 55, I choose to let my hair grow long & go gray, for now anyway. So far, it touches my waistline & looks like gray highlights around my face. I like it & hubby likes it, that's all I need. Anyway, thanks for allowing other ladies to see that going gray can be beautiful.

For me, this was your best video, in my opinion. When I was a kid a neighbor bought two Belgian stallions and I had the opportunity to watch them "get to know each other." Wet spring in New York ! Here in Western France it has been dry for four months (after a very wet January). We have had a little over 50mm (2 inches) in three months. First hay was made a few weeks ago; more this week when we have lots of sunshine forecast and temperatures in the upper 30°C (about 90 in your degrees). Barley and Oil Seed Rape nearly ready for harvesting (several weeks early this year).

It's like the meme where the 2 Australian guys are screaming F*CK YOU at each other across a pond from each other but neither really has the the follow through to really do anything about it. This is how I'd imagine the interaction would go if they were near each other, chasing each other around, screaming obscenities, and the occasional hit being thrown lol.

Very disappointed that you and Jim did not allow the stallions to get acquainted first with a fence between them. Much less stressful for them to go slowly. Also, reduces the risk of injury. Is there an underlying desire to see them fight it out? Where's the horsemanship? Most experienced and humane horse owners do what is best for the horses' well-being. Step up and do it right please.

Just for interest, I watched your video that talked about Baron's weight, and began to send in my guess of 1501 lbs, then, I thought better of it. I didn't know the date you were making the video, and thinking that I was not on the same date. so, I cancelled my comment. For me, that was intereting, I realized that I was on the wrong format, and not the email address you announced. Thanks for thereat program, and please keep up the good work.

I have to admit I couldn't watch the stallions fighting/playing/sorting things out. I grew up with horses and we kept a gelding and stallion in a pasture away from the brood mares. They were best of friends for years but then one night they got out of their pasture and got in with the brood mares. In the morning, we found our stallion pretty beat up but alive with the mares. At the far end of the 40 acre pasture, we found the gelding dead. They had a terrible fight to the kill. The turf was all torn up ....looked like a war zone. Our stallion (used extensively for breeding) was so sweet but his instincts took over from time to time and the results could be frightening. One day I watched as someone rode past our house on a horse. Our stallion rounded up our twelve brood mares and three milk cows into a tight circle about 200 feet from the highway. A yearling bull didn't cooperate, so our stallion simply picked up the 500 pound bull by the scruff of the neck and carried him to the circle of brood mares.

Worst fight I ever saw. Two horses had been turned out together. One was a dull, plug school hack. The other was and advanced horse with a strong personality. Guess who beat up the advanced horse. We kids went running, waving buckets, halters anything. Hoo Boy! Interesting afternoon.

I think I would've put them in stalls next to each other for a few days before turning them loose together. Scary. Hopefully no scars from it.
