Such great recollections - thank you both! On my first West End audition I was auditioning for West Ends biggest casting director. I was asked to prepare a pop songs and I decided to sing one of my all time favorite songs 'New York State of Mind' - I knew this so well and long before I became an actor - this was was in my very core. I have just been called and as I am walking up the stairs, a friend of mine was coming down and he is a tad upset. He said to me in passing "if he picks up his phone he doesn't like you" this was said with some venom. Well, I walked in knowing I was going to do a great job. I greeted the two auditors and walked over to the accompanist and told him what I was going to sing. I had marked everything well - he said great. I gave him the tempo. I walked over to my spot and I did my slate. Just as I was finishing my slate this guy picked up his phone. The music started and I completely forgot the opening line of the song. I tried again but nothing. I haven't been asked back since. A very small part of me wants to blame him, because I feel what he did was rude and unprofessional. Ultimately, however, it is my fault for not doing what I went in to do. WE learn from these moment.
This was great! I could feel (embarrassment) what you were talking about! It’s so difficult to have a bad audition when you know how good you are and how experienced you are!
I had an audition for one of the dance schools once that still haunts me to this day; it started with a short group ballet and contemporary class and after that, we were called in one-by-one to show our 1min solos..so I walk in, introduce myself blah blah, and they say "start whenever you want" and I was like, "okay, whom should I give USB with my music?" and they were looking at me like I just fell from the moon.. apparently we had to perform our solos without the music I never got that memo 😂 and let me tell you, there is nothing worse than dancing in a really really really quiet room and the only sound being your heavy breathing 🙈 oh and at another dance audition, there was like 50 of us packed in a relatively small dance studio for a 2hr class. All good, BUT we didn't get any audition numbers when we checked in?? and then a month later we got an e-mail saying whether we were chosen to be in the "competitive" group or in the "reserves" one.. I still have zero clue on how they decided on that 🤷♀️
