I think a composting toilet would work well for your tank sizes, diverting urine to your black tank. As for power, you might consider one of those portable inverted generators or more panels. RV with Tito made some portable window shades out of flexible solar panels that are pretty slick. Also, Robin at Creativity RV has an informative video called something like The ABCs of Power. She has some great ideas in there. For external storage, you might consider one of those racks that attach to your rig's hitch. You could put a big locking box on it and some of them swing out so you can still use your back doors. Just some ideas. Hope you can figure it out and look forward to your boondocking adventures. I love your channel for the cooking and prepping ideas. I'm very passionate about fridge packing too!

Great video. The biggest tip to avoid these issues is to plan for it before buying your rig (ie big battery bank, maximum solar, using propane for heat/hot water/cooking, etc...)

I understand all your concerns because I have them too. I have a tiny t@b trailer and am already thinking about upgrading a little bigger. I live a healthy lifestyle and do not want to live on processed food or limiting water so I want something that fits my lifestyle. Is changing rigs an option for you? I see other people do it when they realize they just need more space to accomodate their life. Of course the trade offs have to be weighed out but I see it solving a lot of your issues. Good video!
Hello! We've seen a lot of people change rigs also. Totally understandable as travel style and needs/wants change. But, we are really happy with our class B right now and think with a couple mods we can do more dry camping comfortably. Maybe someday we'd go bigger, but always trade offs! Enjoy your honest real life vids. Don’t know about the compost, maybe in a tiny house…in a van I’d really try to look into getting a custom larger black tank made and mounted. You mentioned you carry around gym weights and total CCC may be at capacity. I’d remove the generator as you don't use it very much and will increase your CCC greatly! Maybe even mount another black tank were the generator was located! For emergencies I’d pack a small 1000Watt lightweight Honda generator and rear hitch mount it on a swing out.
I definitely want to look into custom tanks. There is room for a larger gray and fresh. Black is inside under the toilet but something to look at there also. Thanks for your honesty. I think it's harder for a couple. Tank sizes being number one for how many days you can boondock. The West has a lot of BLM land. Can suggest a few areas in Southern Nevada that are free or cheap if you need suggestions.

When we get back will start my second battery install using my 4 Battle Born’s & Go Power Inverter that I kept out of C coach. Will be two separate systems because the coach has a 255Amp AGM. Hello. I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but have you considered a Stowaway 2 for more storage? We have one on our Airstream Interstate and it helps considerably.
Time to run with the "overland" crowd if you want to boondock. It's definitely a learning curve managing your resources while going out into BFE, but it's so worth it!!
I think many of these issues can be addressed with a DIY build. We based ours on a promaster. We have 900W of solar, 6.5 kWh of lithium battery storage, composting toilet, 37 gallons fresh water, 30 gallons gray water, no noisy generator, supplemental charging via alternator when necessary. The entire set up is designed for easy of boondocking.

I have a Winnebago Travato K class B, I can go Boondocking for a week maybe a week and a half but the black tank is only 13 gallons and it's always a concern even on my own.. I have 300 W on the roof and two 100 amp hour gel batteries that are working pretty good for me. I was out at Quartzsite last month and I didn't have any problems charging my batteries during the day. I carry a small 2000 watt Yamaha inverter generator that I use when the sun goes down until I go to bed, it saves me from having to turn on the generator in the Winnebago, and it's a lot quieter. Other than the holding tanks and the 27 gallon fresh water tank being a bit small there's nothing else about my travato that I don't like.
So true about the garbage disposal! No one really talks about it, but it indeed is one of the pain points of boondocking. Sure, we have space to store the trash in the truck bed, but disposing of it takes some thought. We try to separate food scraps & food soiled packaging vs other trash. That way it's only one bag that has the potential of smelling. So excited about you guys boondocking more this year!

1st of all, everyone your age is traveling around in an old white Econoline van due to their budget. You're actually traveling in style. Me and the missus are much older and we travel in a 23' Airstream Interstate as well. Getting more power was your first concern. We use a compact 700 watt Ryobi propane generator that is almost noiseless, runs for several hours on a propane cylinder rain or shine 24/7. It hooks up to your RV plug in with an adapter and will charger your batteries, run all your electrical other than appliances, radio, lights, and a small coffee pot, but not all at once. The next thing I would suggest is you attach a cargo box on the back of the RV to carry tools, extra 5 gal. water tanks, portable holding tanks, hookup hoses and cables. It adds 2-1/2 feet of length, but it is worth it. There is much more, but this is all we have time for today. Good luck on your journey.

We are heavy in the research phase of things and been watching loads of youtube channels. We plan to do a lot of boondocking and have been wondering why people aren't pee-ing in the woods. I know for us girls it's not as easy as it is for the guys; but DEF not impossible and if it means a few more days not having to see other humans....#SilverLinings We weren't sure whether it was an ecological disaster, a privacy thing or what! We just got done boondocking for 60 days straight and it changed our lives! ru-vid.com/group/PLdJBTbJVb0R3p1_MJe2ffoJikhx_U3YBO I don't believe there is a major ecological factor to it and have since learned urine can be used as fertilizer because its high in nitrogen! I think it is most dangerous when feces and urine are mixed together and when you get too many humans in one area using the outside as their bathroom that can present problems. Especially near water sources. You're probably right where it is more of a privacy thing or just getting used to it. Urinating outside during the day and using our bathroom at night allows us to stay out for about a week. That's with a 15-gallon black tank and two people. Going number 2 in the black tank also of course! If we are at a busy place with less privacy we will sometimes use a cup in our bathroom and then dump it on a bush outside! Lithium batteries and charging batteries from alternator allow me to boondock until I need to get more fresh water/dump trash/empty porta-potti. I have a diy cargo van with 300 watts solar, 3 - 100 amp hours of lithium batteries, a 2000 watt inverter. I have 20 gal fresh, 10 gal gray. I use an Instant Pot and an induction cooktop. Almost a year out, I ❤ my setup.
A couple of topics to cover. 1) Power - It sounds like you added AGM batteries that now give you 300 amp hours of power. In the real world this only 150 amps since your these batteries cannot be depleted below 50% or you will damage them fairly quickly. We have 600 amp hours of lithium with an extra chassis alternator that can recharge an almost empty system in less than 2 hours of driving. We don't boondock more than 2-3 days max, we are on the move (mountain bikers). Switching to Lithium (which most likely will require to change out the 30 amp plug charger) to 300 amps would double your current amps because Lithium batteries can be depleted almost to zero. However, this still might no be enough for 5-7 days of dry camping. Having a larger battery bank would require you to add or use the chassi alternator for charging. If your system is deplete solar can be slow to charge with only 200-400 watts on the roof. Tanks - I have a couple friends that have no Gray or Black tanks (no bathroom) and have no issues boondocking, you simply need to be creative. We do our best to avoid using both the grey and black tanks and can easily go for 7 days without dumping (16gal and 12ga). We take our showers outside and prepare food before the trip (heating up only). This saves a ton of water. We use the back of the Van with a shower curtain for privacy. We use a bucket lined with a plastic bag that includes a padded seat (that comes with screw on sealed top) for #2 and the woods for #1 (Live in the Pacific Northwest). If you plan on being at one place for a week put a private stall and use the bucket. Our van uses LP to heat our water and air (Truma) which saves on power. If these creative ideas don't work simply drive into town, dump and fill up with city water then come back out. Everything is a compromise living in a small van.

A few things (we have a Roadtrek van): There are some great boondocking places in New Mexico and West Texas. Our favorite was just a few miles west of Las Cruces NM (Sierra Vista). On water, flush more without water...being from MN, you may have heard the common cabin phrase "if it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down". We kinda practice this (not to the point it smells). RV toilets can be flushed with out water, then use a jug to put a little water in after you pull the handle. We keep a gallon of unfiltered water just for stuff like this. The reason the black water fills so fast is the 8-12 ounces used to rinse.

Hi great video. You mentioned that you hate to run the generator due to the noise and vibration . So do you think these new class b rvs that use lithium batteries instead of the generator like the Winnebago Boldt would be a better choice for consumers rather than an rv with the old style onan generator? If you had a choice between the Travato with generator or with pure3 system, which would you go for? Thanks.
Hello. Yes, I think the lithium would be the way to go if its in your budget. It has a lot of benefits over agm, like weight, consistent power draw, speed of charging and more. But, price is still a concern for some and that's were an conventional system with a generator still has a place. And it can still be a good back up option if boondocking and having cloudy rainy weather for a week.
Maybe you could get a panel mounted on your back window to work like an awning while parked to get more solar power..? Or run the generator while your gone for a couple hours during the day to power up the batteries.
Make sure if you exchange your toilet for a composting or dry separating toilet that you send the urine in the grey tank (where the urine gets diluted) and not in an empty black tank as that would require you adding water each time (as in flashing) rather than just using a spray bottle with a water and white vinegar mix. Also if you use a good quality electrolyte powder in your drinking water you do not need to drink as much (we use Dr Berg because there is no added sugar and plenty of potassium). A bucket with a gamma lid can be used to store stinky trash or food left overs separately from your regular trash. Even if you double filter tour tank water is probably better to bring extra drinking water in separate containers that you can wash regularly and in case your water pump stops working and you can’t get the water out of the tank....have fun out there.
Hello. Yes, you can install a washer and dryer in an RV, but because of space you won't see them in smaller RV's like ours. We wash our cloths at a public laundromat or at the RV parks if we are staying at them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Everything is a trade off between space/comfort and maneuverability/ease of travel. We really do like the van and enjoy traveling around in a more normal vehicle instead of a larger RV. We have it worked out now where we can go 7 days boondocking and its great. In the future if we ever change it will probably be more about getting "out there" farther and would go with a 4x4 van, overlander, or truck and trailer.
Good insight into boondocking. I’m gathering ideas from many videos. It seems that one major change to this life style is needing to be in tune with all of your waste needs. If you were to choose a composting toilet, I believe urine is considered “grey” where as poop is considered black. So, I’ve been thinking about whether you could either use your black tank or replace the black tank for more fresh water storage?
Yes, it does bring some challenges and some fun to see how long you can stay out off grid. I'm going to look into increases all of my tank sizes. Maybe with a custom tank builder/manufacture if its not too expensive. Also, keeping overall weight capacity in mind. I have heard of people combing their gray and black tanks after getting a compost, but I think we would still keep the black tank so it would last us over a week for urine. Thanks for watching!
These electrical issues everyone needs to consider before buying a factory built class b. They tend to be better suited to campground (with hookup) camping and not for boondocking. Composting toilets are the way to go. Larger fresh wter tank and no fixed grey tank. Trash/garbage you have to look at as if you were backpacking, as you are doing. If you use a Berkey water filter you can fill it from almost any source just by carrying a gallon jug. Food prep you have down. Boondocking in remote places helps to resolve the bathroom issues, just like backpacking. Like you stated, it's all a learning process.

@@IreneIronTravels We found that we can `cut grey water by not washing dishes. Rather we wipe them clean with a paper towel and then disinfect them with a white vinegar and water solution. When showering we only use about a gallon of water each and use a biodegradable soap. This, since we use a composting toilet, is all the grey water we produce and it can be safely dumped anywhere. Just some thoughts.
I think I caught you mentioning, in another video, getting some high temps in areas of Arizona... did you say you used those Sand Free mats to cover the windshield to help lessen the heat that went in the coach?

The planning stage is one of the best parts for sure! Hopefully its not too long for you. We will definitely include some food prep and fridge info.... that's Chris's specialty! We usually plan our travel around the country as we have big events that are lined up in advance. For example we booked early last year the Lake Havasu Xcapers Bash which we did fitness and nutrition at in January which lead to Quartzsite, AZ and a Dometic conference in Tucson. We are doing Alumapalooza in May also. So we pretty much just fill in the gaps between big events we have planned. We try to stay pretty loose to enjoy the places and relationships we are building. We do stay alot in Thousand Trails RV parks as we have a membership, but this year we want to branch out a little farther in BLM and Forestry land.

Some folks love the Goal Zero but they are pretty expensive so we went with an additional portable dual fuel generator that is amazingly quiet and has a remote control! With you guys that may take up too much space so the goal zero or some of the other options like that could help. I am sure Aaron has looked into all those options already🤓!! Exciting! You guys are getting close! It is tough to buy the perfect rig right off the bat without any mods. All you can do is get close because there are so many variables and the kicker is sometimes your travel "style" changes. What van are you looking at?

It sounds like you need a larger van, or larger trailer? Your running out of room and options. You guys have done such a great job with your current space but it might be time soon? At the same time all rigs are going to need to be converted for boondocking.
Lots of thoughts. 1. Power - you'll want more capacity, and more power production. Draining batteries all the way down is bad for their longevity, and lead batteries get the best lifespan when you don't discharge below 50%. So see if you can find room for more. On the production side, you've got a few options, none of which are mutually exclusive. A) you can install a second alternator, which will output 170 amps at idle (and 280 while driving) and recharge your batteries very quickly. B) You can install a raised roof rack above your AC and awning, and put on a TON of solar. C) You can buy a small 1 kW - 3 kW inverter generator (Honda, etc) that is super quiet, and use this to help charge your batteries and run AC loads. 2. Tanks - your black tank is a bit tiny. I just bought a class B (haven't even received it yet) and it's got a 22 gallon black tank. Those extra 7 gallons would go a long way. I don't know how your tanks are laid out, but you might be able to fit a much bigger tank. As for fresh water, I have a 30 gallon bladder for emergency preparedness (lots of hurricanes in Florida) and I'm thinking I can fit it under the rear seat. You'll have to see what works best for you but water bladders are great. 3. Be careful with storing trash outside when you're in the wilderness. Can attract wild animals (especially bears) in certain areas. 4. I'm not going to spend any money on it until I get out on the road, but I've been looking into telescoping masts for antennas. Getting above the trees and other local obstacles can help your signal a LOT, so an extra ten or twenty feet might make a huge difference in some places. 5. Buy a 12/120 volt fridge/freezer. I bought a "Ausranvik 26 Quart Portable Fridge" for a road trip in my car and fell in love with it. You can set the temperature for a refrigerator or freezer, and it looks like it will fit perfectly between the two front seats (I have not put it in the van yet to confirm). But I use it all the time at my house for extra space when the grocery store has frozens on sale. On the road trip we had 3 people in a sedan, and it fit perfectly behind the driver's seat, and kept all our drinks nice and cold. 6. If you are in an area that allows campfires, consider using paper plates and cups and burning them. Don't burn anything plastic (both for your health and the environment) but paper is fine. 7. Water delivery and trash pickup service is cool! I love when people have innovative ideas. He just needs a "honey wagon" to empty your black tanks and you're all set! 8. It will complicate parking in cities, but consider a trailer hitch cargo rack. Many have 300-500 pounds of cargo capacity, which is great for water tanks / bladders, or anything else that is a low theft risk. Some even fold up and won't make parking that much worse.

@@IreneIronTravels Good guess, but nope! I'm reluctant to tell the full story until everything has gone through, but I bought a used one (2019, 10k miles) from a neighbor. Assuming nothing unexpected pops up, it'll be the deal of the century. I wasn't meaning to "talk crap" 😁 about your black water tank, just point out that there's probably a lot of opportunity there. I'm going to spend some time in my unit before I start making plans for re-doing my tanks, but you could probably get a metal shop to weld a custom one out of stainless steel that maximizes available space relatively quickly and cheaply. Since volume is cubic, increasing any tank dimension by even a few inches is a big change in total capacity. A cubic foot is 7.4 gallons - making it just one inch taller is 8.1 gallons. I also don't know if it's possible to install a roof vent on the tank, but that can allow water to evaporate off and give you a little more room. If it's not a roof vent, the odors might be unpleasant! Also, I've really enjoyed your channel. I don't plan to fully emulate your lifestyle (I get exhausted just thinking about it!) but your experiences have definitely contributed to me making changes in my life that I hope will make me healthier and happier (IE, taking the plunge on buying a class B and getting out there). So, I'm glad to offer whatever experience I have in return.

Many options but shouldn’t you consider weight before making these changes. Some vans have very low CCC. Don’t overload and become unsafe for the sake of convenience
Yes, you're right, most people don't even think about capacity. That is one reason we went with the 1 ton dually Sprinter over the Promaster. Our Airstream has a OCCC of almost 2300 lbs, which is huge for a van! We did get weighed and have about 600lbs to spare...... but weight is always a concern and usually need to trade off. I was onboard for the boondocking until I saw the mice!! Wanted to know if you used any of the spray on the underside of the van like the peppermint spray I have read about? Hey guys! What an exciting time, waiting for your new rig! Congrats! Yes, the mice are the WORST part about boondocking! We are going to do a recap of what we learned on our 60 days of boondocking and what we would change. We just got back on the road a week ago after being back in Minneapolis for about 2 months. I totally forgot about ordering "mice stuff" and so we stopped at a Walmart on the way and all they had was the steel wool. So we added that to the holes and cracks we though they might be coming through. Maybe you can have Embassy do an extra mouse proofing on the engine compartment, which is where I think they get in. I even just put a mouse trap on the engine to catch them before they come in! We didn't get any mice at the last spot in Montana we were in. I still do want to try the peppermint spray and other deterrents, which we'll talk about as we use them. It's a battle! Don't let them win as some of the spots are sooooo beautiful and worth it!

New subbie and brand new RV'er - well we got a teeny 13 foot Falcon that my Kia can pull so we are boarder line RV'er - anyway so excited to find your channel. I am also a fitness addict! Hi Noelle. Congrats on getting your Falcon! I'm happy you found our channel and are enjoying it. Food prep is truly the key to so many obstacles while in an RV...from storage space to limited power and water, but mostly just to stay on track to feel good and reach your goals. Working out at a campsite will get easier for you as you do it more. You just adjust to people looking. We have a ton of people come up to us and chit chat while we are working out. That is one area where I was forced to learn some patience. I like to stay focused during my workouts, but, I love chit chatting with all of the nice folks we meet so it's worth it. - Chris
Hello, I have 2 answers for you, I use a diaper can made by ubbi on amazon it’s small and oval keep it behind the passenger seat and to lower trash output I use reusable silicone sandwich bags in different sizes the brand is zipseal. Remember that the door on a class b is wide you really don’t have to worry about blocking it unless your using it. Hope this helps.
I was watching Mars, the land formation is kind like earth BLM For sure, no one will bother me over there. Can you imagine my class B rig over there. It will stand out. Lol!!
