Hey! I know I’m super late to the party but I’ve just finished reading this book for book club. Read it in less than a day because I loved it so much! I do struggle with recalling/making sense of stories/books so I have to gloss over summaries afterwards - that’s when I came across this review! The way you summarised and spoke about this book was absolutely stunning! You really helped me appreciate the book to a much deeper level, for which I’m beyond grateful!!! Ended up ordering it from BookD. Just could not abide getting it with the shit NA cover, way further on in the year lol. Can’t wait to get to it. Initially I thought the Sarah Waters quote at the bottom said Sesame Street and I was like maybe it’s not as dark as I thought it was???!

Can someone please explain the ending to me? I really wanted to love this book, but he became so confused by what happened at the end that it ended up annoying and frustrating me so much.

Aha, yes! I’ve been at a few books clubs where this book came up and the ending drove a lot of people wild! For me, the ending was a sort of fantastical explosion of reality to show how the world of the submarine was now forever in her, and had forever changed her, to the point that she couldn’t now exist in the ‘real’ world. I saw Armfield talk at an event recently, and she mentioned intentionally breaking the traditions of endings to play with the narrative. But yeah, it’s an ending that has angered a lot of people!
