Excellent video Rob, I think that today Oura Ring doesn't offer something new that doesn't do the rest other than being a ring and not a watch, I don't know if it's worth those 300 + subscription. Today everyone has nocturnal hrv, sleep and respiratory rate. It would be interesting if you could test the Apple watch applications for sleep and a new one like Athytic
Really good analysis. So glad I chose not to upgrade my Oura Ring 2. It's unfortunate that releasing the 3 was really a move to generate cash, and not because there was any improvement to their technology.
Hi Joshua! Well, it could still happen. Also, I think the improved sleep stage algorithm could also work on the Oura Ring 2, though I think they will not upgrade that one. They did improve the sensors to improve temperature, and add workout heart rate and SpO2, though they have so far needed many month to provide these updates... I indeed think they were overly optimistic on timelines, but lets hope they release these soon and that they work well 😊😄
@@TheQuantifiedScientist yes good points! How much do you find devices can improve with software/algorithm changes? I kinda feel like it depends much more on the hardware technology itself, and software improvements are usually small or to resolve bugs. I guess we'll need another update in a little while!
It is certainly a bit aggravating that people now have to factor in a subscription fee, or people like me had to rush into upgrading to the next gen before having had enough usage of gen 2, for a product with barely any improvement. But I try to remain hopeful that this cash flow is part of a strategy to show investors that the product still has potential, and will help Oura keep the lights on and crack on with improvements. But then again, I could be saying it because I am now personally invested into the product and wish to see a return on that. Either way, it's a new-ish form of technology so it is to be expected that it is a risky investment.
A terrible roll out of the new model. Read the scathing reviews on their Instagram. Ours basically did a crowd funding on their loyal Oura ring 2 customers. Their business model is enough to put one off of their decent product.
Not a current Oura user. Has this beta release been updated again since? Is it still in beta? Are there any other channels looking at the latest software/algorithm? Any info is much appreciated.
Would definitely love to see some updated tests. Debating about getting the Oura ring or the Apple Watch ultra. Mainly because the Apple Watch might be uncomfortable when sleeping.
@@nathan-clark yes, as of 2 months I believe, they show in the oura app a beta version. So we see 2 versions of sleep, beta is usually seeing less time in deep sleep and more in REM. I am also curious to see another test with oura to see if the beta is more accurate, you're the only one I trust❤️
impeccable work! Nice that someone with the background tests so meticulously. I would just suggest you make some general videos like "what are the best biomarkers to track for goal x" or "what are the best devices to track sleeping quality" etc. Because since this is the first video I saw of your, it is not that easy to find this kind of information. All the best from Germany :-)
Been waiting for this video for a while, and will wait for another one after the software update becomes available to see if I should buy the oura ring 3 or the next Apple Watch. I love your videos and they are extremely helpful and reliable, keep it up my man!
Thanks to you, instead of an expensive Oura Ring 3 I own a Garmin vivomove Sport (so beautiful and good for deep sleep) and a fitbit inspire 2, such a good value using it for hrv and additional sleep tracking.
Hi Curtis! There are some quite OK trackers out there. However, without EEG (or preferably PPG) I think there will be a limit. Also, these algorithms will likely be aimed at "normal/healthy" sleepers
@@TheQuantifiedScientist could you tell me which device now in 2022 is the best one in your opinion. Best value for best tracking ability... I'm looking into buying one. I've watched a lot of your videos.
Went for a ski trip a few weeks back and the oura ring was quite good in noticing my body becoming exhausted. Subjectively I was starting to feel it gradually as well. But the morning then oura ring said to rest, I was originally planning on going but decided against over caffeinating and going and just resting and it was the good choice. Athlytic with the apple watch was still reporting stuff that was a bit more random at that point. So I like the ring as an unobtrusive tracker that I also like as an accessory. Means I don't have to take any others with me.
I am totally agreed with your assessment. I am wearing Oura ring 2 then 3 for many years now. The recommendation the ring gives me has been very helpful and my sleep has improved a lot. The readiness scores were very accurate to how I felt when I jog. Oura ring look at the data on that day plus the trend lead to that day to give the scores, I think that might be the big difference compared to Rob data only looking at specific data of the day.
I would love to see review on the best sleep tracker ecosystem (sleep, fitness, medical trackers [ Cholesterol, Blood pressure..etc.] vs best sleep & fitness tracker vs best solo sleep tracker. Can you also include the best tracking apps for all those devices. 🤔
Oura is indeed gunning for whoop’s helm for recovery, stress and sleep but at the moment it seems that Fitbit is closer to whoop than Oura and Fitbit’s main focus isn’t that anyway
Hi Shervin! Yep, Whoop still beats Oura's ass when it comes to sleep stage tracking at the moment. I do think that the size of the group of people who would benefit most from having a Whoop is probably comparable to the size of the group that would benefit more from Oura. Though they have plenty of overlap, for the non-sport-focussed and more-health-focussed group, the Oura is still a great choice. Have a great day!
As feedback, I'd be really interested to see a plot of devices how well devices detected awake time vs sleep time combining (deep, light and rem together). I've accepted that actual sleep stage tracking is not very good for these devices and I'm only really interested in tracking how many hours I was asleep accurately, and I'm curious which device is the best for that.
When the Oura Ring 3 was announced, I purchased 2 month old Ring 2 for $120 for someone who ordered the 3. So glad I did. While the Ring 2 is not perfect, it does prompt me to rest As an activity tracker, I don't think the ring 2 is very accurate, I sit all day and type on a keyboard, I doubt I am as active as it tell me, even though the activity is very low Still great sleep tracker and if the 3 is as good as Oura claim, I will buy it Great video once again, thank you Rob
I was waiting the whole video for the *For Sale announcement from the video thumbnail, as I thought I could get the ring on discount from you (I'm about an hour drive from Vienna), and after the video ended I saw it actually says For Some :-) it was obscured by the timestamp of the video length. Anyway, this is the video I was waiting for, it confirms that I have to wait for a reliable device. Thanks Rob.
Hi, could you make an comparison for the most discussed rings (Oura3, RingCon and Ultrahuman Aur) in accuracy? And maybe some more interesting ssettings like setup measuringintervall? All reviews are to general. Yours are the only one which review things which really matters. Thanks and keep going!

Hi Rob! I love your channel almost absolutely!! There is one little thing I started to question in your reviews. From what I understand you aren't analyzing the most useful data for sleep. As a productivity maniac I am interested in better sleep. In this context better sleep is more deep sleep. Especially the amount of deep sleep is the most important metric for me (and the rest of biohackers). So when you analyze if the deep sleep was detected it's only a small part of the story. For me, much more important information is how accurate was the amount of detected deep sleep. It actually doesn't matter if the deep sleep was detected mistakenly in incorrect moments IF the sum amount of the deep sleep was counted correctly: -> the amount of deep sleep on the test device is 95% the same as on the model device). Do you think you could address this challenge in some way? Maybe you could publish the raw sleep data from your tests and I could help calculate the accuracy for this specific and (in my opinion) the most important metric. I appreciate your work!
Yet another excellent, comprehensive review. I’ve worn WHOOP for over two years and have now been wearing Oura Ring 3 for about 4 months. In my experience, WHOOP is far superior at sleep staging. Oura is particularly bad at detecting SWS & REM. Here’s to hoping that the updated sleep staging algorithm is vastly improved, but I’m skeptical it’s as good as Oura claims in that one peer-reviewed journal article.
Compared to both Apple Watch and WHOOP, Oura seems to struggle with accurately detecting respiratory rate. I think that’s one of the reasons it’s so ineffective at accurately staging sleep. Hopefully, the new algorithm greatly improves this.
@@jamesfhIII I just got my oura ring 3 today. Its my first technological device that's wearable. When this "new update" I've heard so much about coming out?
@@XTen1000DaysX According to the most recent email from Oura, the new sleep staging algorithm is scheduled to launch sometime in “autumn” of this year.
I was really hoping you had tested on their promised* 2022 sleep tracking algorithm. They claim ridiculously high accuracy, so hopefully the rubber will meet the road this year. Please re-test when the new algo is out!!
Does this video not cover the new sleep tracking algorithm? I'm very tempted to buy an Oura for sleep analysis and this video suggests I should keep my money...
I am looking forward to summarizing the best Smartwatch in the category of heartbeat accuracy, GPS accuracy etc. I really like your scientific tests because there is a lack of objective tests like yours.
Having so much trouble deciding whether to go with the Oura 3 or Whoop 4.0 to be a companion to my Apple Watch 6.0. Really appreciate all you reviews and time spent for your RU-vid videos
Great explanation and review Rob. I use my Apple Watch and an app called Training today. The app has access to my HRV and it translate that to a RTT score. I think it’s pretty accurate. When I am up I do see the last measurement was taken around 5am & around the day the app will update if I am stationary with very little movement. I also use my Garmin watch and rely on body battery as an indication of my HRV
@@TheQuantifiedScientist I think so 😉 to be fair the Apple Watch is reliable for HRV tracking and having training today work out my readiness is a plus. I had covid recently and training app consistently gave me a score of zero for 4 consecutive days advising to refrain from any activities! Amazing stuff right? On day 5/6 it recommend that I do minimal activity in zone 1 and 2
@@Ajajambo Nice. Can the apple watch be configured to keep you in zone 1 and 2 whilst training? I.e. give you an alert if you're training outside of those zones
I hadn't realized they had finally updated the algorithm. Still far from perfect but probably at least *somewhat* useful / clearly better than chance with decent deep and awake detection. Guess I'll finally start paying attention to it again.
Awesome interview, would love to see more of this between those of you in the wearable space, and I have so many questions for all of you, including the quantified scientist. For instance, does he see an overlap in his field of study and wearables? If so does he plan to pursue them? I’d imagine somewhere buried in the data there’s useful information when it comes to epigenetic‘s. Three people come to mind when I think about the work you guys are doing, Daniel Kraft, Eric Topol, and Berci Mesko. These guys bring the health and medical side to the wearables discussion. Lastly, we’ve all had our “I wish my watch did this” moments. What features or upgrades do you wish Garmin or Apple (or other) would add today, something you know is technologically easy to add but for whatever reason doesn’t exist? I’ve been begging for a multi-activity feature for years, I’ll buy whatever brand delivers it. The common term is”WOD”, a mix of as many activities as you like. The activity names should transfer too so that box jumps transfer to Garmin Connect and Strava as box jumps and not revert to the generic “cardio” name. Ideally we can save these WOD’s and share them so others can download them. The possibilities are endless and so many people are Crosstraining, doing CrossFit, Hyrox training and competition, Spartan obstacle course racing, DekaFit competitions etc. Okay I can go on forever, thanks for the interview and keep it up!
Hi Rob. I’ve been watching your videos for a while, and follow your analysis with interest. The only thing holding back my decision, not just the algorithm update, is the battery longevity. How long will the battery in the ring last before it just stops holding a charge? $300 + subscription is a lot for something that may last 18-24 months maybe? What’s your opinion on the oura ring’s shall life? Thanks 🙏
My friend please rate and test the new Oura Gen 3 ring sleep algorithm. I think it sucks. But I'd like to see your analysis. Thanks man! I mean you are seriously promoting it in this video and yet I think it's worse than it ever was. They didn't even really change the way they perceive it I mean measure it. It just seems like they used a formula to change the math based on the HRV score. People with higher HRV scores are getting instantly more sleep and deep sleep but people that have lower HRV scores including those who are older who have normal HRV scores for their age are immediately seeing huge deficits in sleep and deep sleep. That's just total BS. They're also admitting that their former algorithm was completely wrong. And that they were basically ripping people off for the last several years if we believe that their new algorithm is true. This is why it's oh so very important for you to do another review where you test this new algorithm against other devices and your other equipment that you so well used to do so. We're really counting on you sir!
Absolutely love your videos as a fellow scientist! I was wondering if you could do your top polar watches for daily continuous tracking? I have a heart condition and would like to have a good wearable device to monitor my heart but I'm not an apple fan. Also I'm located in the US and Huawei has been banned here. Thank you!
Hi Rob. Thanks for the video. Do you know if the oura ring released the promised features yet? I am quite excited and looking forward to a nice device with which I can track my hrv, but also o2 levels in my blood. The oura ring appeals to me, but I also feel kind of lost as to which I should go for an alternative device. Some much choice. Which would you recommend?
Hey there, love your videos :) Just had a question : Is there a reason why the data isn't sorted by date in ascending / descending order at 15:05 ? Might have shown the nature of their algorithm (learning / static) :)
Circular ring - Oura ring's rival is coming this year. Would love to hear your review about it soon :D other reviews is not as good and scientific as your
Do you have a video/blog/article, where you compare all the different devices side-by-side to see which on is the best for tracking sleep? Or is it just these individual reviews? Thanks!
Did you consider swapping hands of the oura rings and do a repeated experiment? It would be really interesting to see if there are indeed differences between hands, don't you think?
Hi Rob, may I ask why do you think Oura ring 3 is not better than whoop devices in Test 8 of this video? I think among the sleep tracking devices you've tested, Oura ring 3 has the best performance in terms of detecting deep sleep which I think might be the most important component of a night sleep. Thank you.
Can you do an analysis of the 'sleep as android' app? It does an estimation based on movement so probably not accurate. However you can also couple it with a HR monitor during your sleep and maybe then the accuracy is decent.
I have a question - have you since reworked the data analysis for the sleep tracking on the garmin venu 2? Because as far as I can tell, the dot in your comparison chart doesn't match any of the data given in your review of the device, and I know you changed EEG device around that time. Just, yanno, what is the method for generating the comparison chart here?
I noticed that about a month ago my REM sleep time increased significantly and has more or less stayed higher. I have been wearing an Oura ring for 3 years now and the increase REM amount was definitely a noticeable change. I was wondering if they tweaked the sleep algorithm a little bit.
I’m not a postdoctoral researcher, but I watch one on RU-vid! I always enjoy your in-depth statistical analysis. I’m assuming you are using Oura ring on your index finger per their recommendation for optimization? It looks like that is the case based on your images. Thanks for the videos.
Hi Erik! I contacted Oura about this, because I could either chose to wear a size 9 on my right index finger semi-tight, or (at least in summer) quite tight (size 8) on my left ring finger. They recommended the tight one, which I can also wear on my left index finger in cold weather. In the end I am wearing 3 Oura Rings daily: (1) Right index finger size 9, Oura Ring 3 (2) Left index finger size 9, Oura Ring 2 (3) Left ring finger size 8, Oura Ring 3 This was the best compromise I could make work Thanks!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Thanks! I had wondered how much variability there was in measurements between the different fingers (if any). You may have addressed this, apologies.
Oura has a new CEO as far as I know. Could be the reason for the sudden change. Hopefully this doesn't become a new pattern. That said I have had two rings with battery issues, gotten two new rings for free with upgrades include.
First, Rob, I want to say another splendid video even though you have rushed this. But it shows that you are very good at this. Keep it up. About the device and it’s market: I got the Whoop 4.0 based on your reviews, and it’s the best for recovery sleep and strain in the market because, without sleep and stress, you cannot know what type of recovery you need. Oura Ring 3 is nowhere in terms of activity-based heart rate and other stats tracking and hence cannot be too accurate to give you the recovery you need. And also it’s not accurately tracking your sleep. I have also used Fitbit 3 charge with six months free subscription. The Fitbit is the best and one of the top 60% for heart rate accuracy and the best for wrist based sleep tracking but the platform is flawed, many of the useful data and stats are missing, and the support is horrible. So before Oura Ring 3 fulfills its promises. Whoop is the way to go. Note that whoop is for people who do sports where you have to move frequently, meaning strength-based trainers may find them useless. Not trainers will also find it useless. Maybe Fitbit would be the better choice with sub. Oura Ring 3 has the potential to compete with Whoop 4.0, but not yet.
Still hanging for your promised Apple Watch “SleepWatch” assessment! I have been using it for two weeks now and I am genuinely happy and semi impressed with it compared to other Apps available.
Regarding sleep stage tracking - do you believe it's only a matter of algorithms and data analysis, or is perhaps hand movement (and other sensed data by the ring) *itself* not reliable enough for sleep stage indication compared to brain activity measurements?
Another good video!!! Make no sense to spend in oura ring 3 having fitbit in my opinion. I have the oura ring 2 and I will not buy the 3. Whoop is the best but 30$ per month is just a joke.
Was going to order one. However they have no UK supplier and it can’t be bought on Amazon. So I’d have to buy if off their international site, wait several weeks, then pay unspecified import taxes and fees. So that’s a major fail and I’ll forget the idea.
If you don’t mind me asking, are you left or right handed please? Provided you are using the same size ring on both hands, I wonder if there is any difference in data as a persons most used hand is supposed to be ever so slightly bigger than the other. Just wondered if you’ve noticed any correlations?
I can understand the reason for a subscription for smart watches because of their capability and usage. But for something that has less capability and features that are not fully integrated yet such as Workout Heart Rate which they claim will be end of 2022. The subscription is a no for me. I will continue to use my apple watch.
Great videos! I really enjoy your channel! This may be just me, but there's something a bit distracting in the way you're delivering your script. It sounds like nearly every single sentence you say ends in a shift down in tone/pitch. If it's just a mannerism you have, then no worries, but if you're reading a script, it makes it content sound somewhat odd and slightly distracting (to me at least), and also removes a lot of emotion/intonation from your delivery. Hope that's helpful!
