Ousmane Sonko is the new Senegalese prime minister appointed by the newly elected Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye immediately after he was sworn in. The 49-year-old Sonko is also the chairman of the PASTEF PARTY which led to the election of president Diomaye in March 2024.
Sonko was ready to run for Senegal’s recent Presidential election but few months before the March elections, Ousmane Sonko was detained and charged with insurrection in July and barred from running in elections. He opted to endorse diomaye Faye to run as president. Sonko’s endorsement of his former deputy Diomaye in the run-up to the delayed election was crucial and he endorsed Diomaye by saying - " Diomaye is Sonko” and this was it with his supporters.
