Out of 100 fruit trees, how many fruit trees died in this last heat wave, and how to know? 2024 8b

I talk about possibilities of why multiple trees are dying and how I tried to fix the possible issues. Temps are over 100 consistently and last year it did fine. This year trees produced a lot of fruit and then started dying when hitting high temps. I will place more mulch on the ground and water it more to see if I can help it live. But watch the video to know how many died.... because I was too late.

I'm from St George as well. That heat wave was tough. Three of my Fig trees didn’t make it & my Necta-Z... they were all in pots. My in ground Flavor Supreme & Flavor King Pluots are Growing well, except my Supreme got bad aphids & destroyed most of the leaves, so only 2 fruit. My king had almost 30 fruit & huge. My Apricot was 8' tall last year & tight branches to the tree, I chopped it to 3.5' in February & its 8' tall again but I trained the branches to grow at 45°. My Aprium did well & had some lovely fruits. My Elberta Peach did pretty good, not as much growth as last two I mentioned. Fruits grew on the very bottom branches at 1.5' high. They had fiery red flesh & were incredibly delicious. Enlightenment Garden channel waters daily, but some trees get more water, that video is helpful. I almost did what she did. Where did you get your mulch? Also you don't want rotting mulch touching your trunk, pull it back a few inches or more. My other 5 fig tree's in pots in lots of shade, maybe 3-4 hours of sun are doing great & I water those daily about 2-4 seconds with the hose & they're putting on growth. Sincerely, Matthew

Thank you for the long response. It sucks to hear about some of your trees dying. I have a couple of others just hanging on right now, but we will see what happened. I will pull back the mulch, it is usually for roots anyways not the trunk. I usually don't water by the trunk so that is why I thought it wouldn't be a problem. I had an arborist dump them for me a year ago. I need to find more mulch though. I also just purchased 10 fig trees in pots in CA and brought them back, they are doing well I had to repot some of them but they might go in the ground next year. Would you be ok with me stopping by your place to see what you have set up? PM me if you are interested. Thanks for watching.

@flackfruit Yeah, I guess it happens down here. A neighbor gets citrus type trees every year & they keep dying on him, but he's determined to figure it out. Did the Arborist charge any money for the mulch? There's Chip drop... watch some RU-vid videos. Maybe worth it, but may need quite a few others to share the mulch/chips with. That's awesome about the 10 fig trees. What gallon pots & what varieties? I have 7 varieties, most are small, but hopefully big next year when I plant them in the ground... need to rip out more landscape bushes that are just messy. That would be totally cool with me if you stopped by, I was actually thinking it would be cool to see your place as well to get ideas from. I'll try to figure out how to PM you. Sincerely, Matthew

Young paw paws need shade! We have shade cloth around and on top of ours. Once they get older they love the full sun

I use Miracle-Gro water storing crystals for my paw paws. It helped when my area had no rain for a month and a half

Buy sun umbrellas when cheap and refit them with shade cloth. Put rings of stones around the trees to trap cool and moisture

I wish that would work with the umbrellas. I get 40 mph winds here almost on a daily basis and the current shade cloth has to be replaced/adjusted almost every year. I tried the rocks stones but it died with one of the trees. I will give it another go.

Are all the pluots/hybrids on Citation rootstock? You would probably have to graft them yourself, but Myrobalan (seedling), maybe St Julian, or Nemaguard/peach rootstock might have better survivability there. Or did they get tunneled into as well? (See! I watched until the end before commenting!)

lol, thanks for watching until the end! Two others did get tunneled, most are on Citation, I think I will give it a try with what you are saying with other rootstock. I did it successfully with Persimmon, I think I can do it with stone fruit. Thanks!!

Babcock died , No Big Loss--- like you said, It doesn't have much in the way of Good 🍑 Peach Flavor

Haha, that is true. I think it is more scary that a perfectly healthy tree just died so quickly. But, I will try something different. Thanks.

Could be cotton root rot?

That is a possibility, I will look into it. Thanks.

The bugs look like Japanese beetles. I had them and had to hit them with cold pressed neem.

looks like a watering issue.

When I watered more, some of the trees were showing signs of overwatering so I cut back again and yes I agree, I was not watering enough for the heat wave and was too little too late. Hopefully I will learn from the lesson. Thanks.

Are you doing subsurface drip?
@flackfruit
@flackfruit 21 день назад
yes, but, they are on the soil surface, under the mulch. They seem to be doing well, do you have different recommendations?

@@flackfruit That shoud be Fine, Here in dry Texas I want to put it 20 inches below Water travels up 2 time the speed it goes down with the idea of keeping the surface dry by limiting cycle time
