People need to realize all of Cebu is not the same. As a whole Cebu is a large city and really only IT Park and Business Park stand out from the rest of the city. Those two sections are more inline with a foreign city, tall office and condo buildings that are new, less traffic, malls just like the west, more restaurants geared for foreigners. Trikes and jeepneys for instance are not permitted in that area. The rest of the city is like any other Philippine city with horrible stop and go traffic, tons of trikes and jeepneys, and motorbikes, not many foreign food type restaurants, many older buildings, etc. So if you are planning on using Cebu as your starting point be aware of where you rent. My take is, if you stay only in Business or IT park you are not getting the true feel of the Philippines, so you definitely need to venture out beyond those two areas and you will see the real Philippine culture in all its glory.

Some of the locals get mad when expats over tip. Why? Locals sometimes find it difficult to get service because workers are looking for expat customers and good tips. In the provinces giving someone a 500 php tip (less than $10 usd) might be the equivalent of what they are paid for working TWO days. When there’s a long line to get a haircut and the barber bypasses the locals and lets the expat cut in line (probably because he tips well), it rubs some of them the wrong way. The same goes for massages, restaurants, taxis, tricycles, etc… My girlfriend’s dad (he lives in CDO) complains about stuff like this. When I’m there I tip better than the average local and so does my girlfriend, but we’re careful not to overdo it. You may not see them complain or understand them because they’re not complaining in English, but some do get very annoyed. The same goes with expats marrying and dating Filipinas. We think that the Filipino guys don’t mind, but some of them do. They just can’t do anything about it because we are seen as exotic and wealthy.
@Si1verRaven
@Si1verRaven 15 дней назад
They should and I agree with the locals on this one. Would you tip someone's daily salary back in the west? My advice to anyone visiting or moving to the Philippines is leave the west behind and start learning PHP and don't compare to USD
@jsully4064
@jsully4064 15 дней назад
@lmcc0072 Oh well, thats too bad. Wish I could tip better in the states but I can't afford it. Dam straight I will tip well in the Philippines. Its hard to make a peso there and don't mind helping the local Filipinos out.
@DingusCirc
@DingusCirc 15 дней назад
You made some good points. Not about the tipping, but unless you understand Tagalog/Cebuano then you don't know what they say about you. When I started understanding Tagalog, my eyes were open. Mike here said someone called him "old man" in the US. What do you think they say about him and his wife here? And 500 pesos is about a days wage, not two anymore.
@lmcc0072
@lmcc0072 14 дней назад
@@Si1verRaven Right! It’s basically the same as someone giving out a $150+ usd tip in California as the fast food wage is now $20/hour.

Cool as I watch ya Both as you each make recommendations as to how to have a soft landing when either visiting or moving to the Philippine's. So i combined Both of your advice (cooling hats and towels Gio) and (Portable safe and not too many clothes but extra shoes Mike) And I arrive in Cebu July 14th to stay with Derek (Q Adventures) who after renting his new Motorcycles several times and driving all over the islands he and I became Friends as He does allot of Philanthropy helping Filipinos out. So I land in Dumaguete July 21 where my now girlfriend i met lives. Yeh I came to visit RU-vidrs (Paul old Dog & Mark T. and Gary & Leah) and ended up meeting a Lovely Lady as that wasn't what i came for but we just hit it off as Friends and it has developed over the visits as by that time I was already making plans to retire a little early and Now Life is Truly looking Great. Hope to run into each of you as Derek helped me buy my own ADV as I'll be scooting around making my learning curve as easy as possible.

I love Mike and Janet, they're so nice. So I'm back in the US for work right now, and guys the price of groceries is what is astronomical for me right now. Super expensive! And haircuts too, lol. By the time you add a tip you're paying like, $30 bucks for a haircut. At the place I go in Robinson, it's not even $5 bucks!

Just visit as 7641 islands so it is so different from island to island.. Bohol is nice and Morena girls are Gorgeous. Cebu is like a big city like Miami or Tampa and Manila is like New York and you get to small town like Dummaguete and it is like a Midwestern town in USA as expats have already got it down so all kinds of American stuff and food available. I think of it like Kawaii (Garden island of Hawaii) and ilioilo or Bacolod are becoming more popular and CDO as even Davao has an appeal to certain guys as you should understand for every good there is a bad.. But ALLOT LESS Stress and Worries and the Prices make your Lifestyle SO Much Better. I was sold after my first trip then wanted to explore. It changed me.

They use Waze Maps as Google is newer there and it is NOT forgiving in spelling as the names we expats mispronounce all the time as it makes my Filipina girlfriend laugh. Mile used to live in Bohol island and bg city Palawan and Gio lived in Mactan which is part of Lapu-Lapu (Cebu city) as so many little burbs and towns like all around Manila (BGC, Makati, Angeles) as I live in Bacong which is South of Dumaguete but still considered part of it.. As finding a street name and god forbid a House number is tough in Philippines as no regular mail service (which means no junk mail either haha) and traffic is "Organized Choas" as NO Street light or Stop signs except in Big cities as you could count them on one hand in Duma and locals blow right thru them so driving is like Wild wild West whoever is Biggest or Boldest as you stay out of the way of Semis and Big Buses and have Driving lights at night.

I look at both Manila and Cebu as Nice place to stay or visit but I Don't want to live in Big City (concrete Jungle) as in the states I lived in South Bend, Indiana town of 106K people with Notre Dame and Indiana University being big draw so after visiting many islands I ended up visiting Dumaguete to do a coffee meetup with a couple of RU-vidrs. And lo and behold I met a Lady with her Masters who works for Dept. of Education and we instantly clicked and talke for hours. I came back to see if our friendship was that or more. Now a couple years later I moved just outside of Duma in Bacong a suburb and 10-15 minutes to heart of the city and it's allot like my hometown. Except no Nightlife as its a Sleepy town with Gentle people and once i met her family i was sold as they all are in Service of helping others, very middle class. So I am Lucky or Blessed.. But also made commitment to travel to a different location once a month as so many islands and such different atmospheres. As long as your Happy and Thriving and Not just surviving as i looked at retirement in USA as it was going to be boring and lonely (I don't drink or go to bars)
