Thank, thank you, THANK YOU for doing "Inside the Whale"! I've been playing the game since I was 7 and have always been curious of what's in those swinging bio-domes. It was actually my favorite area as a kid. You can imagine how excited I was when you announced you were doing an episode on SMB because I just KNEW you were gonna cover it. It took 2 decades later, but now I finally got a good look on what's going on in there. Kudos Shesez, this vid is gonna be a favorite of mine!
To think that some time ago, Nintendo had taken down the animal crossing new horizons video for a bit because of the boundary breaking, but now sega is approaching you to boundary break their game... Crazy how different they are from each other
Dude, what annoys me is that de developers made it so when you go there, a dialoge will start, saying they will call the "police" and then fades to black and takes you back home or sometimes even send you to Jail, smh, so stupid
@@_.-. from what i've heard, their behavior seems to be all over the place. Which kinda makes sense, since Sega has always been kinda decentralized.. one part of sega acting as 'sega' can be cool about one thing, while another is C+Ding stuff into oblivion. It's like that time one part of Sony sued another part of Sony for using Sony's copyrighted material.
@@KairuHakubi Which sadly means you need to tread around with the worst case scenario in mind, which is as hostile as that Chinese guy banning Winnie the Pooh
@@NatsuDragneel1x shh... go back to dogpile people on reddit. If you don't want a piece of everyone else's mind go make contact with grass, you ain't cut for extended (30 min) internet use
it's so amazing when games put this much work into backgrounds you will literally never look at because you're focusing so hard on your ball and making it not fall off
Those statues are absolutely fascinating. Even if they aren't unused bosses they must surely have a story to tell. Hopefully someone is able to ask an old dev about it eventually
RoboBowler (hope I got the name right) in the comments said "Those statues are actually characters from a previous game Amusement Vision did called 'Slashout'."
The Inside a Whale world was always so interesting for it's setting. Like even as a kid, I was floored that there were near perfect LIVING SPACES FOR HUMANS INSIDE A WHALE! Like why? But it wasn't until the remake that I realized the bottom contents were highway roads and a full on skyscraper. Like this whale must be some sort of monster that swallowed part of a city. Honestly, it's just so cool to look at (maybe not for any survivors living inside the whale though, probably less cool for them).
@@siphillis I feel like the cartoonish look could look good if a bit more budget was put into it. It ends up looking a bit like a beginners unity game in a lot of places.
@@xSuperFryx I mean. It's monkey ball. It's a "big" franchise the same way Shantae is. Fans are the only people who know anything about the game. The budget doesn't surprise me. Especially since the first game needed all that product placement in order to get much needed funding.
Current Sega is pretty progressive now. Giving fans opportunities to make content for them from animators, indie devs and youtube content makers to promote their game unlike another overly protective company. Looking at you nintendo 🤣
This is a good enough episode all on it's own but I also just wanna say that the marketing on this game is top tier, reaching out to people like you and Nick Robinson, this game really does feel like a love letter to Monkey Ball fans for keeping the torch lit all these years.
@@Conlinkin If this is the same Nick Robinson, he sexually harassed some women a few years ago, its what got him fired from Polygon. He himself confirmed it so please don't come at me telling me its not real or something. Sure he apologized and I do believe he's genuinely remorseful and has changed, but you gotta understand that that doesn't mean I _have_ to forgive him. I was a HUGE fan of his in his Polygon days and when this came out, it was like a stab to the gut. I just don't like thinking about him anymore
It is so awesome that Sega approached *you* to do this episode! I can see why, the effort and details in these areas are insane, especially for how small the play area is in comparison. My favorites are the whale stage being an entire being an entire post-apocalypse future and the crazy amount of detail in the cooking pot stage!
Oh man, I've been hoping for a Super Monkey Ball 2 episode for years and now with Banana Mania this is even better than I could've hoped for. I was always so fascinated by the backgrounds in the first two games and just the level of detail the developers put into them. The domes inside the whale were something I especially loved.
9:10 Those statues are actually characters from a previous game Amusement Vision did called *'Slashout'.* Most of the statues (if not all) are basic enemies from that game. *That isn't the only Slashout reference in SMB:* Dr Bad Boon's first base (the one next to the Amusement Park) is actually in Slashout also the gears seen in the Clock Tower are from Slashout as well
I wonder if the devs planned to send you this a long time ago, and that's why they put so much work into making an impressive zoom-out in some stages for the remake. Because, logically, you'd think that upon remaking a game, they would opt to do _less_ unnecessary work than what was in the original, not more. Either way, episode turned out exactly as I was hoping. Getting to see all the details of the background elements is awesome, and I'm happy the devs put so much work into making them.
I was on the edge about buying this game since I love monkey Ball 2, but this video honestly made me appreciate the game more. I'm in the process of buying it right now.
Jesus Christ, the areas are so huge for such small levels. These guys are nuts, both the original devs, and whoever worked on the remakes. Just absolutely nuts.
"Sarudama" - Monkey Ball also that 877,000,000 reward for Aiai in the saloon. "877"in Japanese can be read as "Banana" (it's a "goroawase", a Japanese number-based word play)
It's crazy how all out the originals went. In most cases (when it came to small and unseen details in the backgrounds) I would argue that the originals looked much better and less broken than the remake, although the remake is still great as it compiles all these games and does it's best to replicate those farr off details, but with an extra level of vibrant colors. I think the coolest part about this though is Sega's interaction with the community with this game. Definitely an awesome move on their end.
When I was a kid one of my favorite parts of SMB2 (besides the gameplay of course) was catching glimpses of the huge environments when I fell off the playable stages. Something about the sheer scale and detail of it all was really inspiring to me and it's so fascinating to see them being explored so freely all these years later. Excellent video!
The original looks better in almost every shot, but honestly I don't care about that because I still think it's cool as hell that Sega approached you to make this episode! What incredible marketing for this game through and through.
Water graphics also look /much/ better in many areas in the original, as well Inside the Whale is a great example; the bubbles have weird transparency issues in the remake.
I didnt realise you were at Too Many Games! Our booth won an award for our indie game when there and I wouldve definitely been hyped to make a point to see you! Ive binge watched these videos on and off for the last year.
the fact that Sega actually asked u to do this is insane to me. I dunno ANY game devs who have asked for their game to be seen like this. Respect to them
2:15 The Rubber Duck actually appears much closer in the Original Super Money Ball 2 on certain stages. One level I know this happens is Hierarchy. Fall off the right side and you can grab a glimpse of that cute ducky! I was actually decently upset that the duck did not come back, I found that thing when I was very young and it was awesome to show everyone this little easter egg/eye candy a la toy train in Mario Galaxy. Glad you mentioned it thought! Not a lot of people do!
Now I see why SEGA approached you. This game is filled with very weird and impossible to comprehend details for a ganr where you play with such a tiny area
In the game The Witness, I have always wondered how and where the secret ending building spawned. What does the building look like on the outside? Does it use any illusions, seamless warping, or loading and unloading tricks?
This really shows how much love went into the original, and how much has gone into the remake. I’m still on the fence about purchasing Banana Mania as I truly love SMB2 and can still play it easily, but props to Sega for this.
Great that after all these years companies are finally asking you to break their games to show the players how they do certain things or hide elements. GG
What do you mean finally? Sega has always been like this since like forever. Big example is Sonic Mania. That game was literally made by people who originally made Sonic fangames and Sega asked if they wanted to help make an official Sonic game and obviously they said yes.
