From Louise. In New Zealand we call the sea urchin, Kina. It is definitely an acquired taste. The orange part that you eat is called the roe. My husband, Paul, only used to eat the roe but now eats the whole lot. He acquired the taste over time. Love watching your adventures and love Jetty.
Back in the 80s I sailed into Bequia and I still remember how beautiful it is. I had a chance to taste smoked whale meat while I was there. We were a group of 5 sailboats and we met a kid that offered his guide services to us using a bag of mangoes as a "bribe". We hired him and when we were ready to leave, his grandma (he was an orphan) begged us to allow him become a "stowaway". So later on we all pitched in with legal aid to make him a legal resident and later a citizen of the US. He learned a lot about sailboats and opened his own business to maintain and repair boats.
How did that work out, exactly? Did you bring him back and drop him off, or get a lawyer, or adopt, or what? That's a really interesting story - thanks for sharing.
You know, those kinds of stories just don't seem very common these days. I am glad to hear they still happen. As for whaling, commercial and pro whaling has killed 100,000s of them. But if a few communities want to hunt 4 per year, that's fine. Only a handful of them still exist. Well, thanks for the adventure story. And I really hope that young men found his North Star.
The Apple fruit is a Golden apple and it has a star seed. Take the thin skin off and rub salt or sea water on the fruit and then eat it. It also is great if you dice it and put it in a fruit salad. My wife and I spent our honeymoon on Bequia in 1974.
Guys here in New England its pretty ugly driving to work and back feels like a Sunday everyday no cars on the road or highways. i'm in Connecticut, take a long vacation stay down there for as long as you can until this gets fixed up here. Take care and God bless you both
i don't think any amount of security is overkill. thieves are the scum of the earth!! park as safe as you can. nice replacement motor as always i look forward to your videos! be safe and thank you!
I have had time to think about this. On the opening intro where you say "Hop on board" and then a couple of seconds Sierra dives off the bow of the dingy. Mentally I think instead of Hop on board it should say dive on in as she hits the water. (Obviously I have been self quarantined too long.) Like this video.
Yes I love eating roti. Im here in Queens New York and just saw this video. Bequia looks very nice. I am literally deciding at this moment if I want to get pizza now or Caribbean food such as maybe curry shrimp roti.
Yikes! Eating that urchin “raw” looked absolutely funky! You are a brave man Billy. Bequia really looks quaint and inviting. Friendly locals taking care of each other was cool. I’ve never noticed, but do you pick up after Jetty does her “business”?
Thank you for posting these. You three and your adventures are so comforting to us right now. We watch your videos and relax for a minute and reminisce about our travels, and send all our best wishes to you three. Thank you so much.
That fruit is called a Golden Apple. You can eat it green with salt and pepper(optional). When ripe or golden yellow, eaten the same way. The Dasheen root is the same thing they call poi in Hawaii. You can boil it in salted water, peeled and eaten as a vegetable. It is usually white to purple in color. The sea urchin or Sea Egg is a delicacy in the islands. It is usually eaten cooked or baked.
Bequia is truly paradise 😍 been sailing there from Trinidad for the past 15 years with my family! The Steelpan show by frangipani is not to be missed! 😜
Have to say you represent the US well at these little markets. And you paying full retail is right and just, and it is obvious that they appreciate it.
That potato looking thing is taro..you peel of the skin cut it in pieces and boil it until it is soft, remove it from the water and it’s ready to eat...in case your hands itch after peeling, warm your hand using fire or stove top and the itch will go away..
7:43 I give up...with over 500 plus sailing channels..its hard to follow all of them...but we all like yall so we follow you ...the benefits of a trailblazer and a girl who can fiberglass with the best of them.
Really nice island. Like some Bahamian places in the oftbeaten path. I was wondering if you plan to keep some urchin shells as decoration. They are pretty brittle. Under the pier on St. Croix there must be hundreds of them. Awesome watching them crawl around. Just drop a rock or something onto the sand and they chase the vibration. Bottom feeders.
Hey Guys, I hope this information helps you guys out. The Bahamian money you can covert back into USD as they are 1:1 exchange rate. Roti - its pronounced ROW TEE not Roadie It is eaten through out the Caribbean and orginated from Indian when many migrated to the West Indies to work on the sugar plantations. So yes similar to a Burrito but all west indian flavors which is normally curry based depending on the island you go. Some Roti's may even have stuffed yellow split peas in them also. Vegetable from the Farmers Market: Cristfine - You can use it in salads, stirfrys, or if you bake fish add it along with green & red peppers and sliced onions. The root vegetable is also known as Tarro or edos. When you peel them they are a little slimy but you can slice it up and fry them similar to making home fires with potatoes. The large one you guys have you can technically bake it with salt and pepper and you good. The small oval green fruit. they are called Golen Apples or Ppommecythere - you can eat them when they are green and sour with a little Salt and Pepper. When they are ripe they go yellow and they are sweet. The seed inside is very Spiney looking seed.
You should recycle more old worn out boat parts like you did with your old sails. That and go to your nearest bank and ask for the oldest circulating bills they have and buy them at face value, you can sell the bills online because people collect old and rare bills.
Those little things are passion fruit. Let them get old and brown before you cut them in half. They usually like like they are going bad on the outside but the inside is sooooo good. Just a couple of spoonfuls. Yummy.
That being said, I cannot wait until you get on the new catamaran. Seeing adrenaline brings back a ton of great memories watching your videos. I cannot wait until you install more memories via video.🤙🏼🍻💯
You should have gone to princess margaret beach and walked up the hill. There are stairs learing off of the beach where the bar and restaurant are. Its the only one on princess margaret if memory serves correct. Theres an abundance of avocados growing there and also passionfruit and bananas. The little green thing is a passion fruit split it in half youll suck the seeds then spit them out . Or make juice with it. You can also freeze it. It lasts forever. Cheapest place to eat is at the local book shop in town. Theres a local elementary school teacher named cheryl she has a restaurant behind the bookstore. Best food in town. Also the kids at the local are very good for eyes and ears on the ground. Slip them five bucks and if youre going walkabout they'll keep an eye on your boat, outboard whatever. Friendliest people i ever met were in bequia.
Love the shirt with the Bahamas flag. Here's a suggestion keep US money, its accepted in the Bahamas and most of the Caribbean islands, and ask for US money back.
Loved this episode, but I had to turn my head when you were cutting into and eating the sea urchin. I had a dry heaving moment, there. Haha ... sorry. But I do love Hawaiian ahi poke and sashimi. I spent most of my life in Hawaii, on Oahu and then on Kauai, and love the local food, I enjoyed seeing more of Jetty in this episode. Stay safe, you 3! All the best!
Hi guys, At 13:51 mark those are called golden apples. Peel off the skin and eat the flesh. You'll know how deep to go as the seed is soft n spiky looking and the flavor isn't as strong closer to it. If you ever make it to Antigua, be sure to let me know. I am there between mid Dec - mid June. And Antigua uses the same EC currency. Not sure if you're interested but look up Antigua Sailing Week. It's an annual event but with today's situation, it has been cancelled along with a lot of other events.
Not too big on chun's my mom's from England she ate some but I don't care for them but love those open-air local markets you are in my territory there love open air local markets great video oh and I saw the queen on the money🇬🇧🤑😇😎🐝
The apples are golden apples and they have to turn yellow but its sweet and the brown one is a dashen and you have to peel it and cut it in cubes and boil it.
I hope you are still at sea and avoiding the madness at home , I wonder how many new boaters will be attempting the lifestyle after all this because you know it will be back and stricter next time , you should be really busy with hands on teaching it will be good business y’all take care
Awesome video Love the underwater footage that was good keep up the good work I need it I'm driving my truck around the United States and it's crazy out here
S., Billy is so lucky. One thing though, maybe u should wear more skin protection from the sun. Sun can also damage eyes. The damage shows up as u get older. and u can really damage your eyes. if u google it u can find out.
Hi guys, I noticed your water collection pipe from your hard Bimini in the background. I assume it feeds into your water tank. What type of filter do you have for this, or protection from silt/debris collection? Thanks, Andrew
Am curious ! Have seen sailboats using kites for propulsion with extreme results . Your kite-surfing rig may be somewhat small , but I would like to see you use it while under-way ( at least once ) 'with the wind' just for fun ! ! It is at least an auxiliary power unit should you lose your mast and motor is out of gas ! !
So beautiful. Want to go there. Please begin operating with social distance. By now coronavirus is everywhere and you can't see it. If you get it bad, your fun will be over for a long time. Impossible to not both get it if one does in small spaces.
From the solar panels at 7:43 , it looks like Beau & Brandy & Oona's boat ? & it seems like a waste of Sea Urchin for so little meat ? ( I wouldn't bother for it )
So if I understand what I saw at the dock, you anchored the stern of the dinghy and then tied the bow off to the dock, kind of a modified Bahama mooring. So other than preventing the dinghy from swinging on a bow mooring and thus preventing damage and being considerate to others that might want to use the dock - was there a reason you did that? Maybe you always have done it and I just missed it, but I am going to stow that idea into my bag of tricks.
Jetty sensed a disturbance in the force hence the barking in the beginning..... Urchin gonads, I can see that. No worse than Rocky Mountain oysters, yum yum. What tech did you install on your rib, the suspense is killing me? Florida's now locked down for people From NY, NJ and CT. Stay where you are.... Loved the video, thanks!
Dude, the spiny thing is weird, I gotta luck that up, interesting for sure... so little edible per piece, and they look kinda big, like they should provide more things to eat 😳😳😳🧐🧐🧐
When we stopped by on a sail to Grenada, I refused to buy the whale bone carvings they sell. I won't participate in whaling, but it sounds like they have a strong tradition and they honor that tradition responsibly.
Next time you are in The Bahamas 🇧🇸 you can use American currency 💵.. It's the same value as Bahamian and if any is left over you can spend US almost anywhere
AT 15:51, any idea what type of eel that is? It looked remarkably like a sea snake that I have seen in the Pacific, but pretty sure there are no sea snakes in the Caribbean...
