Surprise parapet design twist at the END, know it for your next project!
Codes / Provisions used 👇
ASCE 7-16, chapter 12 and 13
AISC - 15th edition
Great civil PE Exam prep and design example problem for young professional engineers with a full step by step out of plane design example with seismic loads. Example dives into the design of a tilt up panel structure using the ASCE 7-16 provisions. We walk through the complexity of the ASCE code to make it a little more simple. We also get right to the point on how to calculate out of plane forces FAST. And dont forget about how to design a parapet wall! One step closer to preparing for the SE and PE exam. very useful, was just designing out-of-plane walls today and learned about section 12.11 but did not know about parapets, thanks Kestava. Looking forward to the next video.

Could you explain how seismic activities can lead to out of plane wall pressures and if we should consider this pressure with the effects of ELF? Thank you!
@Kestava_Engineering
@Kestava_Engineering 2 года назад
hi Nicholas - OOP seismic forces do exist and are important to analyze if you have a heavy wall (concrete or masonry) the mass of the wall accelerates under a seismic event just like the rest of the building. there are equations in the ASCE 7-16 under ELF procedure that cover this completely. take a look!

for the parapet shear and moment demands, how did you know to treat the 4' parapet as a cantilever when previously it was pinned at the roof diaphragm?
@Kestava_Engineering
@Kestava_Engineering Год назад
it is pinned, but the framing of the wall is continuous over that pin so the parapet can translate moment

Thank you for the video. I did not know about the parapets using Fp loads of chapter 13. Thank you, learned something today. However I learnt another thing from another video. The parapet loads were applied in the opposite direction of the OOP wall seismic loads. It makes sense if you imagine how the wall will vibrate during an earthquake. Because of how you define the supports (the parapet with the free top) it will vibrate in a double curvature mode. See: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0Z8tMRPcXu4.html

Hi Kestava I wanted to ask if OOP ASCE design would be applicable in testing the capacity of an unreinforced masonry wall through calculating the OOP forces? Would the same solutions in calculating the parapet work? such as the equations in section 12.11 fp=0.4SDSIeW

Hi, Why the moment at the support is equal to zero? Its fixed support, it shouldn’t be zero.
@Kestava_Engineering
@Kestava_Engineering 2 года назад
the figure says to assume the base is pinned! no moment translation through the connection!

determine what type of diaphragm you have! rigid? flexible? semi-rigid? then follow the ASCE 7 from there to start!
