It's finally time for a critical offseason to get underway in Oakland, and despite an increase to our budget, we're still going to need to cut some payroll. Did we make the right decisions?
I probably would've done the same thing with the QO for brown but I do find it hilarious that fisher handed you an extra $20M and you immediately spent it on a fringe arm. Looking forward to seeing how you get out from under that contract!
Wow that looks like a great deal to get Chase for Cauley 👌 I did not expect you to get that good of a deal for him. Look forward to the updated scouting report but as it stands that deal looks really solid. On the other deal for Butler it’s great to get that money off the books but tough to know what those guys will bring. Early days and the updated scouting will tell more but Dena will hopefully give you that extra body in the back of rotation. Really like how you’ve managed to structure the DeCaro deal the way you have a few others in the past. I’m hoping that development you’ve put him in for pays dividends too. Looking at the FA pitchers demands it’s going to be tough to pick up much there so I think DeCaro will need to play a solid part this season unless you can get someone decent in as part of the Hunter Brown trade. Can’t wait to see what you manage to conjure up there. It was certainly worth the gamble giving him that QO especially as he seemed pretty pi$$ed at the contract offer you tried. Can’t win then all 🤷🏻♂️
Ha, I agree! If DeCaro works out I really like the top four in our rotation with him, Ferris, Burns and Miller, and I think we have several guys in the mix for the fifth spot. Need to get some bullpen help next!
Decaro's deal is fabulous now that we have dev lab in the game. Tons of opportunities to turn him into a really solid starter for us with very little cost. Those types of contracts - cheap, long-term with young, good personality guys - are what can power our future. That QO made my teeth hurt.
AL home run champ has 3 stars, wild. Also LOLed very hard at the QO. I saw that coming a mile away. Also, noticed Enyel De Los Santos on the FA market, 1.9 mill, seems to have decent ratings and is considered popular.. might be a good target once you get that awful QO off the books lol
Ha, we'll get it off the books, whatever it takes! What was the difference you saw between Brown saying yes and Lodolo and Bradish saying no the year before? The situations all seemed similar to me. Agree De Los Santos looks solid, but we missed out on him unfortunately... he is also a Flyball guy, who I haven't generally had much luck with in Oakland, but that was still a good potential find, probably should have considered him more seriously.
@@oldschoolsports Did Lodolo and Bradish have stronger seasons prior to free agency? That could be why. Also I wonder if you pissed brown off with bad offers prior to the QO if he would have accepted it or not
@@TheNotorious_KEV Ha, would be interesting to see if I can make a guy so angry that he would never accept a QO. In my opinion, the seasons were all solid, and I think I could argue any of them were stronger than the other, but maybe I am talking my book. Bradish had the highest WAR at 3.6, but was 12-13 in 172 IP with a 5.08 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and a bad 83 ERA+ but a good 85 FIP- and was 33 years old. Lodolo had a 3.0 WAR, with a 10-9 record, 171.1 IP, and 4.41 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a slightly below average 95 ERA+ but an above average 91 FIP- and was 31 years old. Brown had the lowest WAR at 2.5 as he only started 10 games and pitched the fewest innings with 134, but was otherwise the most effective pitcher, with a 7-2 record, 3.29 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 128 ERA+ and 80 FIP- while making an All-Star team at age 32.
Upgrade center field and draft WAR can be done with one player. This might be a situation where we have to call him up earlier than we’d like to in terms of service time to make sure you keep your job
It definitely will be a balancing act with Ortega... as you noted, he can help us with multiple goals... but I'd like to make sure he's truly ready before we make the call, and not sure that will be in April or May, as he hasn't developed quite as quickly as I might have hoped!
Like Decaro’s deal. The QO scares me, but him declining the 1 year deal gives me hope. I think these high greed guys might have an unrealistic sense of their worth.
So deeply insulted by your 19m offer he decides to accept it, what a jerk 😅Hope it's not too painful to get him off the books. His value on the market should be around 15m. Otherwise, like the deals! getting butler and cauley off the books, especially the return for cauley was really nice - and a bit unexpected.
