A vicious severe warned supercell produced monster hail up to 3" diameter and bigger in Roswell, NM on May 28th, 2021. There was a beautiful sunset sky on the backside of the storm.
Carry a few of those heavy sleep blankets with you to throw over your car after you pull over. That should help. I had a friend in NJ during the mid 70's driving a 67 Chevy convertible of some sort that got caught in a hail storm of some note. I+ inch hail pummeling the convertible top tore it to pieces and everyone in the car had bruises from the wicked hail. All survived including the car with minimal damage. The convertible top was toast and the windshield and sheet metal was not broken or dented at all. I think it may have been a bit stronger back then.
True story, a warning came on the radio of large hail and my van was only 6 months old. Nowhere to protect it from damage so I got two-bed comforters place over the entire van and secured them so they would not get blown off. The hail came and it caused damage to my neighbor's vehicles but not mine. Those neighbors also laughed at me while I was covering my van too.
I saw a news report of an immigrant that spent multiple thousands of dollars extra when building his home in California. He insisted that every piece of building material was fireproof. The neighbors laughed and laughed.., until a wildfire swept through. His was the only house that survived!
Being a storm chaser you'll appreciate this story. I was traveling west on I-80 in far western NE when I saw a huge storm coming from the west. Just before the huge hail started a tornado could be seen heading right at us so we pulled over under a small overpass for protection and climbed up under the bridge. Before we knew it the sky was black and as many cars as could fit were also parked under there or just left out on the road. The tornado went directly over the overpass as we hung onto the steel girders. It was deafening. There were at least 20 of us up under there. It ended as quickly as it started and after it passed there were 8"s of hail covering everything in sight. Cars and trucks flipped over everywhere. Trying to drive in the deep hail was like driving on marbles. I had a 79 Mustang. The WY border was only 2 miles or so up the road and everyone was pulling over at the first exit recounting the entire experience. It was 1989 so no dashcams etc... I was on my way to AK from PA. The one rare time I had no film in my camera.
I've never in my life seen a storm with hail that size. I'm glad you made it through everything safely. This was a fantastic video! I just subscribed!😊
Really? I grew up in Dallas, Texas and that wasn't all that uncommon. Now when they turn into the size of grapefruit, THAT was uncommon. Entire car dealerships have "hail damage" sales of their vehicles when the hail gets to baseball, softball, and grapefruit size.
Had my car totaled out from a hail storm in Greeley, Co back in the '80's. Softball + size hail. A three year old child was hit in the head and died. It was a horrific storm.
I was once driving between Clovis and Ute lake, and it started hailing Marble size hail so thick I couldn't see. I managed to pull over at a roadside picnic table that had a roof, and got my car as close to that as possible for protection. As the hail quit, It was revealed my friend was parked on the other side of the table, seeking shelter also. What a strange coincidence.
Tell me about it. I live in the PNW and we had a Spring more reminiscent of SoCal than Oregon. Bone dry; rare when we get a 95° day in May, but we did just a day ago. Doesn't bode well for Summer....
@@briane173 I'm in Klamath falls Or, it was 94 here yesterday, it's so dry I was hosing down some lawn in the middle of the afternoon, it's a spot I reseeded and need to keep it wet. A bat flew down out of a tree and landed on the ground where I just sprayed, it crawled around in the grass licking the water off the blades of grass, I stood over it giving it shade while it crawled around for a good 5 minutes licking up water, you know it's dry when a bat will come out in the middle of the day to get a drink water. It shocked me to see a nocturnal animal come out in the day, just to get a drink of water, but they've not turned on the irrigation water, all the canals are dry, and I've not seen a mosquito one. I figured they're might not be enough food with water content in them for the bats to hydrate themselves.

Today was crazy all over NM!!!! I live a few hrs north from roswell n its rained/hailed!!!! But it was much needed moisture!!! Never gonna complain bout rain or snow!! ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!!!! 😍😁😄
@@dragonladie1063 amen girl it’s been so dry I’m not not complaining at all. Just I hope and pray this is not all we get this year. But you know New Mexico we seem to get hit hard then we have nothing after that. I
There was a tornado watch and a flash flood warning that day. Unfortunately a lady died in her car in her driveway when it hit. The car was found four miles away and her body was found seven miles away. This was close to Hondo NM, approximately 35 miles away from Roswell NM.
@@johnlshilling1446 You must *really* struggle in life. Not everyone who disagrees with you or points out a tiny "issue" is mentally ill. ....but with an ego as fragile as the one you seem to have, I'm guessing you can't grasp that fact.
That's the Pump house they call it. I came through there right after. There were cars all over the side of the road, wind shields , back windows . Cars were going off the road . this is about 16 miles south of Roswell.
Every year in Colorado! My favorite time of year. I own a roofing company so June storms pay my bills for the year. The big storm should be hitting any day now!! Back to work!
Hello. I live in Roswell. We received in 3 days some 5.99 inches of rain, a levee over topped and in Roswell, flooding of the old Walker air base. We had pea size hail, tornadoes near Roswell, but not in town. And it was worse as you moved south. Take care all.
Hey that’s me! In the Bronco haha we were on our way to Carlsbad. Luckily I pulled over in time to shelter and that guy guided me in closer to the building. I have a few dents on my ride though. Glad you’re safe though! That storm was crazy!
The restaurant where you stopped is just a few hundred feet from my home. The hail was too big to wrap my hand around, some baseball, softball and hockey puck size. It destroyed vehicles, homes and properties. The next day we experienced a flood. Many homes and roads are still flooded. Thank you for the video.
My son’s car was hit with a significant hailstorm in Nebraska and even though a lot of the hail damage could be reversed, many of the dents could not be easily repaired - like the dents along places where the sheetmetal bends from one angle to another. Hail is no joke. It also ruins many roofs of homes. My wood roof had to be replaced in a hailstorm in Kansas City. It was about $10,000 to replace in the mid-90’s.
I've lived in Southern NM for 2yrs. I've heard stories of the hail storms out here and have seen the dents in cars they've left but I have never actually witnessed one. That's insane. I can't believe how fast it damaged your windshield
Years ago in Carlsbad NM, I saw a new car dealership where all the new cars that were not in the showroom were all but destroyed by a hail storm that had gone through town.
Yes there is... my husband was a property adjuster for Allstate and Farmers for years so I've seen the evidence and I've gone through enough hail myself
We just got home from Roswell yesterday. We had some hail in Enchanted Hills area, but more just heavy as hell rain. Yesterday, there were sections of 285 that slowed us way down. It basically rained on and off from Roswell to Denver. Luckily, my aunt had a carport I could put my car under. Sorry you got everything busted out!
Aaron: (gives vid the title 'Out Of This World Hailstorm In Roswell, NM') alien: Yeah, we kinda noticed....(grumbles as he takes his UFO to the shop to get his smashed visor repaired)
The silver pickup at 4:30 could have easily pulled just his front end and cab under the overhang and made room for others. The hail isn’t going to hurt the rhino liner in the truck bed at all…

I have never seen hail that big! That was crazy. The clouds and rainbow are absolutely stunning.Your poor windshield though.Stay safe out there.❤from WV....Angie
There was a hailstorm in PA a few years ago, it took out the skylights in a mall and a large number of windshields front and back in the parking lot were knocked out, not just cracked. A lot of vehicles out on the highway, house roofs and siding were also damaged. So it does happen in the east but is not as common as in the midwest.
No tornado and a need of a new windshield...seems like a shit day at first... ...but when you see how splendid are those clouds at the end! Just wow! Totally worth it! Supercells under the evening sun is just too beautiful
Roswell looks the same as when I left in 1992. However, my hometown, Colorado Springs, has grown from 80,000 population (when I was born in 1954) to 600,000 in 2021. Roswell stayed 50,000 the whole time!!! Terrible hail, hopefully most fell in the boondocks outside of town.
Did that in a delivery van once. Turned the van so the windshield was AWAY from the wind direction, pulled over, and moved myself to the middle of the van in case the glass broke. Sound like someone was dropping planeloads of baseballs. Turned out OK.
The cheapest piece of glass to destroy in a vehicle is the windshield. And they wont shatter; they hold together. The side windows are expensive and break into many small pieces then let water infiltrate the vehicle. I always stick the windshield into wind/hail.
Daniel Shaw, the Australian who has often chased and photographed storms (and been a First Responder when needed) during US tornado seasons before the pandemic, attached a strong metal screen to the roof of his vehicle as a hail and debris guard, extending out from the roof in front to give some shielding to the windshield. In some of his videos you can see huge hailstones getting shredded by this screen. I think he has a way to deploy it to protect a larger area, but I’m not sure about that. All his windows except the front one are reinforced and super-strong. Imagine how intense the updrafts must be to keep something that big airborne and accreting. And imagine the animals out in that lethal hailstorm. The side-lit images of the storm’s structure, for example at 6:03, are amazing. Like the underside of a glowing cosmic mushroom. Wild.
I live in Roswell, NM, and have never seen hail like this! I believe it, though. This was filmed on State Highway 285 going into Roswell, from the looks of it and when it rains, it always floods the highway.
I also feel sorry for animals outside. Thank you so much, sir, for showing how hard hitting the hail stones were and doing total damage to your windshield at least. At least, you got through it.
As I’m watching this aghast, my mind goes directly to prophecy’s I’ve read about this. Kudos to this driver, my Adrenaline’s racing’s watching his situation. I appreciate his commentary
Revelation 16:21 "And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great." This hailstorm was absolutely insane, but this is nothing in relation to what is coming! Please repent my friends, and trust in Jesus!! To note: a talent = about 70-100 lbs. Hard to imagine a hailstone that huge..
People could conceivably have deployable hail shields kept stowed on an existing roof rack, or a roof mount of some sort. I just don't know how various candidate materials would perform.
