Bowie landing in our living room was like watching an alien arrive. It was glorious. Also he mentions "The Norfolk Broads" which weirdly is now where this London girl lives. Bowie didn't die, he went home to his own planet.

His pupils were permanently different sizes - he got punched in the schoolyard and his one pupil stayed dilated the rest of his life.

This is not just a song, it's a work of art.

After watching the new bowie ‘documentary’ Moonage Daydream and another called ‘the last five years’, i am convinced that he was easily one of (if not THE) greatest artists of our time. One of a kind was bowie…or more…one of many kinds! Credit also must go to the late, great Mick Ronson who not only played phenomenal guitar but also wrote the string arrangements here…one of his first attempts at it. Not bad for a first, eh? I miss both those guys badly

Didn't we have the best music back in the 70s & 80s? Such a creative era that some of us got to experience from the front row of life.

It's based on a dream he'd had where his late father came up to him and told him he would only have five more years left to live, super emotional piece, he was actually crying while recording the end of the song!! Did it all in one take, too.

As I told you JM this is the first voice he had, typically British. I was reading about this video that he was not happy about doing it like this. They had phone ringing during the recording, he wanted to play an instrument. Bowie play piano, guitar, sax he's very talented. When he passed away, at the Brits awards they asked Lorde to sing this song with Bowie's musicians, it was a great moment. You can find this video here on RU-vid. Thanks JM Bowie was my idol

YES!.... David Bowie is certainly a "Very Unique Package". Notice the different size of his eye pupils. Left side is larger than the right. David took his last name from the famous Jim Bowie Knife that was used at the Alamo in Texas and gained notoriety then. David liked the name. Most everything from this artist is different.

Since you seem willing to explore the Bowie rabbit hole bit deeper, and since you already noticed how versatile Bowie was, may I suggest you give a listen to "Sweet thing/Candidate/Sweet thing", from 1974 (just one year after this song) ? It's another key moment in Bowie's evolution, and believe me, it's not the last by a long shot :D !

One of Classic Rock's Goddesses is the incomparable Grace Slick from the 60s group "The Jefferson Airplane" She was often called "The Acid Queen" A True American Music Icon. The first person to say the words Mother Fucker on Live TV. Her voice is certainly the stuff of legend. A song that has altered the culture of America since it hit the airwaves.....When asked why does the band do songs about drugs, Grace replied how everybody who asked is a Hypocrite and society has been feeding children mental drugs for decades with movies like "Alice In Wonderland" is a drug trip if anything. SO,,, she wrote this song that is another MUST SEE...... "White Rabbit"

There's actually an interesting story about the origins of this song! Bowie's record company had given him the task of translating a french song, when completed, he turned in the translated version titled 'Even a Fool Learns to Love'. They were unsatisfied with the piece, giving the task to a different managing company. The final translation ended up being 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra. Bowie was outraged by the success of this version over his own, so he wrote 'Life on Mars' in retaliation. 'Life on Mars' ended up being about a girl who is unhappy with her home life, so she's completely infatuated with fantasy stories and films as they give her a chance to get away from her own reality. The girl he's speaking about in the song (the girl with the mousy hair), was a real woman that Bowie wrote about quite often around this time, her name was Hermione Farthingale. Bowie described her as his first love. Also, the reason one of his eyes was dilated was because of an injury. He had a crush on one of his friend's girlfriends back in school, rightfully so his friend hit him in the eye for it. Ended up paralyzing the pupil. Same guy that hit him in the eye, George Underwood, actually designed a couple album covers for Bowie later on!! Plus Bowie is pronounced Boh-ee!! 😂

The piano player on this song was a relatively unknown (at the time) studio musician who you should definitely check out named Rick Wakeman. He’s known for his work with the best lineup of Yes.

His eyes were different colours. Schoolyard fight - with his neighbour and friend who ended up doing art work for some of his album covers. My brother has the same eye issue - one dilated pupil from getting hit on the eye with a cricket ball.

They made a 25-minute documentary entirely about this track and nothing else ---in Sweden. Wherever I happen to be, it's an instant four-minute daydream in a cinema, and it'll never lose its luster for me. The piano was played by Rick Wakeman and Bowie's different eye colour was caused by a punch in a fight for a girl. Anyway, what a genius. RIP David.
