Joshua Castille as Quasimodo and E.J. Cardona as the Voice of Quasimodo perform "Out There" from The 5th Avenue Theatre's production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
At The 5th Avenue Theatre, we transport audiences and tell important stories. This incredible staging of The Hunchback of Notre Dame recognizes Quasimodo’s deafness and stars Deaf actor Joshua Castille as Quasimodo. Vocal talent E.J. Cardona brings Quasimodo’s inner voice to life.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame plays June 1 - 24, 2018 at The 5th Avenue Theatre.

This is a victory for disabled actors, that's all I can say about this performance. The fact that Castille shows so much emotion despite not being the singing voice of Quasimodo, both they and Cardona deliver one of the best Quasimodo performances I have ever seen.

it’s not really “despite” not being the singing voice, facial expressions are a HUGE part of asl (and part of why i’m bad at asl). facial expressions convey what tone of voice/inflection does in spoken language. but i agree, this rendition of this song is honestly my favorite

Ok I see they are being inclusive but in-universe what is the artistic meaning? Is Quasimodo deaf and the gargoyle is an imaginary friend - a representation of his lost voice?

This is a great rendition!! 😃 I must say, I really applaud these kinds of productions, not only for staying accurate to the character in the book but for also allowing deaf actors to be able to play a very iconic role and play to their strengths! As a disabled person myself, it really warms my heart to see this kind of representation for disabled people ❤️ I hope with the likes of this show and Lost Voice Guy recently winning Britain’s Got Talent that there will be more opportunities for them to prove there is more to them than the general public perceives 😃

I watched this particular production and honestly I hated the gargoyles in the movie but actually thought they worked quite well as Quasimodos inner monologue in this musical stage adaption. They aren’t the cringeworthy gargoyles of the movie but instead really help develop the main character’s struggles and identity. “Made of Stone” was by far the highlight of the show.

I saw a production like this a year ago at the Music Circus, and honestly, I think it’s the best way to portray the character. Quasimodo’s deafness was already showed in the original stage adaption by the difference between his speaking voice and his singing voice, his inner monologue. I think that doing it this way, with a whole separate actor as his “voice”, really helps make that distinction. Not to mention it gives HoH actors more opportunities and makes what I believe to be a more authentic performance & portrayal.

Josh Castille is one of my favorite stage actors. I was fortunate enough to see him as Ernst in Deaf West’s “Spring Awakening”, so I was overjoyed when I learned that he’d be playing the title role in “Hunchback.” My hat’s off to the casting department for casting a deaf actor in this role and for incorporating ASL throughout the show, as I feel it adds a special element of authenticity. I live in Michigan, so taking a trip to Seattle just to see the show will be out of the question, so I suppose I’ll have to survive off the clips that are uploaded here instead. ☹️

Living with ADHD is hard when you want to be involved with everyday stuff but at the same time you're wishing you weren't such a pest...this song is almost a perfect representation for all of us mentally ill individuals. @Hannahlindsey7
@Hannahlindsey7 4 года назад
J Do I’m confused by your comment... is it a bad thing to relate to very particular struggles of disability and mental illness? These are things that aren’t portrayed very often in media, and certainly not in Disney media. The fact that people of all abilities and mental health can find beauty in a story in their own way is a beautiful thing, and I find your comment to be quite condescending to those who were touched by this rendition. Quasimodo is a character with disabilities. They’re downplayed in the movie, but they play a much larger part in the book. Representation of disabilities is important. And it’s absolutely great that you can find your own meaning in this story of breaking out of your comfort zone and connecting with others. That is a great connection to make. But it isn’t the only one, and this story (and any story) speaks differently to different people based on life experience. You should not attack people for how they relate to the character, song, and story.

I was once the voice of a deaf/blind woman in a play while I was in university. To my great shame, I was kind of an ablest little shit the whole time. I learned a LOT. The woman who portrayed the character was fantastic, she absolutely NAILED the bitchy ridiculousness of the character. The actress herself was the sweetest, most sarcastic woman you'll ever meet. She was so patient with my ableism. It was one of the best experiences of my life, even though I was uncomfortable the whole time- not only because I was learning to not be as ablest, but also because I was a CS/Math major in the Theater majors' domain, which was one hell of a culture shock. In CS/Math culture, if you see a way to make an improvement, you tell people. In Theater culture, constructive criticism of their acting is incredibly rude. CS/Math culture's humor is more word-oriented, Theater humor is more physical/slapstick/mistake oriented. Theater people are very comfortable with physical contact- kissing/hugging/flirting for humor is not uncommon, in CS/Math, touching is very rare and is only done between women who are close friends. Pardon the tangent, the gargoyle guy just reminds me of my old role.

I am very fascinated by this production of Hunchback due to the actor playing Quasimodo has explained in another video that he is deaf. I was curious how the acting aspect of the show worked. Did Quasimodo sign through the show or did the gargoyle character speak as he signed. It was a fascinating concept and I would like to know more. I was recently casted for the role of Quasimodo in a production in my town and I noticed some things he did in his performance I really appreciated and will be attempting to harness some of these characteristics into my performance as well as traits of my own. Wonderful job!

Joshua Castille, the Deaf actor playing Quasimodo, spoke aloud throughout the show. He mostly used his own voice to talk to "outsiders" like Frollo, Phoebus, and Esmeralda. When he was alone or with only his gargoyle friends, he used sign language with his spoken lines. The gargoyles used ASL with Quasimodo as the actors (all of them hearing) spoke their lines aloud for the hearing audience. In this way, ASL became almost a "secret language" between Quasimodo and the gargoyles, and something we could easily imagine Frollo forbidding. In "Top of the World," Quasimodo teaches Esmeralda a few words of ASL, and it is one way we see the trust between them. Hope that helps!

OMG! The passion! The expression! Clearly we need far far far more deaf actors! I have never seen such expression, or such bombastic feeling from a non- deaf person. I've seen a couple of shows with deaf/blind actors and they tend to be awesome! This guy is skilled as a person, his embodiment of Quasimodo's humanity is fantastic!

That was such a moving performance of this song. I loved this song from the movie and didn't know it could be performed to move my heart even more than it already did.

AMAZING I very much appreciate people like this disabled person who are willing to put themselves " OUT THERE " watching the sign language for me is extra special when with what I have my brain problem makes my word connection and understanding difficult I never could be brave enough to be like wonderful NORMAL PERSON in my understanding to speak loud without saying a spoken word I hear fine but speaking can be a problem for me and also get distracted easily I think silence can speak so loud and be so powerful ❤ people say a picture is a thousand words but the expression along with the hand motions done speak so much more than actual having the ability to talk / or hear whatever the disability YOU HAVE OVERCOME IT !!!!!!!

So special and beautiful! Although the sound mix could be a bit better i think? (may be its my stereo, but the voice sounds a bit creaky, like it 's too loud, and to much percussion in comparison to the rest of the orchestra)

So it looks to me like we've got an incredible production filmed, right? That's what I'm seeing. Is there any possibility of us getting this entire production released on film, after the run is finished? I know procast DVDs for musicals are few and far between, but since Disney passed on sending it to Broadway... maybe we have a shot?

Thanks for the compliments! We're pretty proud of the show, too. Unfortunately, due to our licensing agreement we're unable to record and publish the entire show at any time. You can see all of our available clips here on our Hunchback playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLG4bJvKx7lBtjqZjNyfhzle_JLO6_Dlqv

Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone Gazing at the people down below me All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone Hungry for the histories they show me All my life I memorize their faces Knowing them as they will never know me All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day Not above them But part of them And out there Living in the sun Give me one day out there All I ask is one To hold forever Out there Where they all live unaware What I'd give What I'd dare Just to live one day out there Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives Through the roofs and gables I can see them Ev'ry day they shout and scold and go about their lives Heedless of the gift it is to be them If I was in their skin I'd treasure ev'ry instant Out there Strolling by the Seine Taste a morning out there Like ordinary men Who freely walk about there Just one day and then I swear I'll be content With my share Won't resent Won't despair Old and bent I won't care I'll have spent One day Out there

I have to say, I think my favorite part is all of the clear positive energy that everyone has! It's clear that all of the extras love Josh so much and that he loves what he's doing so deeply. What an amazing message.

Joshua, I'm in love for him right now. Very good actor, convey emotions through facial expression. I would love to see that live. And A.J. way to go. That's a very hard song to sing...

If EJ is just providing the singing voice, does Joshua speak for Quasimodo when he is just talking normally?
@damialmon2070
@damialmon2070 6 лет назад
Josh does use his voice as well as signing a fair bit in scenes with others (Frollo, Esmeralda), and in some scenes when he is alone Josh will solely sign to EJ/other gargoyles and they will respond with voice and signs

So is josh completely deaf or hard of hearing? And how does he know if he’s saying the right words if he can’t hear? Ik about feeling the sound vibrations but don’t know exactly how it works
