I have had my 98 wide glide since 04.Never.let me down. Still on original drive belt.Only put new battery on in 2017 ( thanks to always been on a optimate.) Its pretty like it came out the factory.Have had 2 sporties since 89.But always wanted one last big twin .As I am 80 this is my last HD.
Built and rode a few Harley bikes over a 40 year period, but the best one was the last one I bought. 03 💯 year anniversary Dyna Low Rider Twin Cam 88 1450. It ate sportsters for lunch and a guy on a V-rod pulled up along side me in Wakarusa Indiana and challenged me. I said sure thing for pinks! He changed his mind and made a right turn and that’s the last I saw of him. That bike was made to go fast, and it was. Best Harley I ever owned. You made a good choice. If you get it jetted right and dyno tune in it might shock you. I’m gonna look for another one for my 65th birthday in July.
I literally just bought an 03 Anniversary edition wide glide. It's also my first Harley. Soon as I saw it I knew.it has that classic look I was looking for, and not bad at 4,000 I thought. Haven't even ridden it yet, well legally anyways. Really like the 2 tone paint scheme on that anniversary edition too.
Very cool Bike brother. Can't go wrong with a carbed EVO. They just feel right. Steady power from idle on up. We had a beautiful day today about 75 degrees, and low wind and humidity so went out for a ride on my loveable old 99 Softail Custom. I love fall weather for riding. Just watching the sun glancing of the headlight, and listening to the drag pipes. Who needs a radio when you have that EVO music.
Last week just picked up a 1997 Dyna Super glide. Only 9700 miles .All stock except for forward controls and LED headlight. just love the old evos. I have a 1987 dresser and a 1992 sportster.
I have a 96 wide glide. I love it. 16 inch bars, lots of leather, extras. 40k miles, runs well. However, just my opinion, not the easiest bike to ride.
I have a 99 Dyna...love it ! I had a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 for 22 years and the Dyna is my first Harley...the bike is more nimble and a lot more comfortable to ride for me!
Just now seeing this, Zack. Love the bike. Pretty sure the motor mount is alright. Those dynas are rubber mounted, so they're gonna shake a little bit in the frame. Also an intake leak may be the cause of the change in idle. It's not that uncommon for that to happen. Real easy fix though if that's the issue.
Hey Zack... Similar story. Sold my '06 883 for a '00 Wide Glide. Only 12k on it now, had S&S 510 cams installed, and I love it. May grab a friend's '96 Wide Glide soon to add it to the stable.
Hell yeah, I’m considering in buying a 98 wide glide. Thought the same thing too, it’d be cool to ride an older bike and something different that’s on the road
grin.....I lost my 54 pan/shovel in a fire three years back and bought a 93 FXDL....it's the newest bike I have ever owned...Stage 1 with Headquarters Rumble Stick cam, Screaming Eagle ignition, S&S air cleaner with K&N filter and baffled drag pipes.
Dynas have been the best all-around Harley Cruiser for the past 25 years. In the past few years, the MoCo changed from a standard swing arm to a Softail configuration for their Dynas. OK, just more expensive. Yes, I own a 2010 Dyna FXDWG.

up all night. guy offered me his 98 st a price that is the only reason I can afford ot. carbed evo. own a M8 but wanted the carbed evo for years. its been very meticulously customized.
Just done the self same thing, Treaded my 2013 Road King in for a 1995 Wide Glide and its great , Sounds awesome comfortable easy to maintain . Not had a single issue so far . for me its the best dissection I've made
Back in 2006 I traded a twin cam Super glide for a 99 Softail . . EVO Rocks . Simple to work on and tune right go forever .And you don't have to pay a arm and a leg to ride one .
Sounds like your carb needs to be adjusted. Low idle sounds cool but it’s heavy on the low end. Adjust your idle to around 1000 rpms then adjust the air mixture to get it right between lean and rich then make sure you’re at 1000 rpms again after adjusted. Then adjust the accelerator pump and check throttle response for no bogging. She’ll def be roaring mean soon after. Sweet ride. I have a 98 FXDWG anniversary edition. Old school cool
If your idle is up and down....check your intake rings for air leaks. Common problem. I pulled a 48 and a 170 jet out of my 98 FXDWG. Nothing sounds like a carbureted EVO.
A shovelhead sounds even better but for reliability the Evo rules. Any CV carb on a 1340 (shovel or evo) will run just fine on a 48 low and a 180-185 main jet.
The 1998 Evo is the best bike HD has ever made as far as reliability and quality. The FXR's have better handling but they only lasted until 1994 (with limited edition runs after that). Best castings, best carb, best clutch. You might have to re-jet the carb. 48 low and 180/185 main jet is the "standard". Runs good in any 1200-1340cc HD.
Crazy I found this video. I just traded a 2007 sportster 1200xlc with 5500 original miles for a 1999 dyna wide glide with 26k miles an I frigging love it. 88 c.i. motor isn't bad.
Got a 98 as well, I love it. You’re a is much cleaner. I still need to get paint and some tuning done but she’ll get there. Also I swapped the fender to one off an 82 shovel head cuz I’m not crazy about the stock fenders on the wide glide.
Great video. Would like to see an update. I just got the exact same bike in same color with 10,000 miles on her. Only got about an hour ride in before weather turned here in Toronto so she is stored till spring but interested to know how its been since you posted the video and any issues or changes made. And you are right......there is nothing like that Evo engine.
Stock Keihin 40mm carb comes stock with a #45 pilot jet. Usually this is jetted lean to pass emissions. Upping the pilot to a #48 usually helps. A 160, or 180 main jet stock.
I picked up a 98 Dyna Superglie Convertible fxds a while back, same paint as yours actually . Im in the middle of getting an Ultima 6speed builders kit installed I love the bike , but it asks for an extra gear around 80 mph .
Well congratulations. Now I have no reason to stay. I have an Iron and that's the only reason I came to your channel. You're a nice guys and I like your videos. But I follow some many other content providers here I sometimes ( and not often enough) I will purge some providers when they changed not for the better as far as I'm concerned. And as most Iron riders here on RU-vid, they leave us Iron and Sportster lovers in the dust. But I understand. 😔 So good luck in the future.
Go with the sticky grips i have those and i love them. I went from straight handlebars to 16 inch apes. I put floorboards front and back they are really comfortable on long or short rides. I have the butterfly shifter and i put gold rims and shiny black paint and those gold rims pop with that black paint. I got mine all chromed out and im looking for someone to put ceramic on my paint and the paint won't fade and it'll be really really shiny. Im thinking about getting an indian and giving my dyna to my brother. I ride a lot even in the winter cause we don't get much snow here so i ride year around.
A first-class choice Zack! After the classic '82 Shovelhead FXWG Wide glide, the old 1340 Big TwinEvo motor was the best second choice! None of this complicated, expensive, fancy, Twin-Cam stuff! If the Headlight is Dipping the wrong way, and the Speedo is out of calibration, the bike may be an import/wheel size? I had exactly the same problem with my bike being imported from the "Metric" Continent to England! She looks similar to my 85/96 Honda CMX250C Rebel in appearance..(apart from the motor!). Take care all!
@@whatyoumakeofit6635Every time I look at my 1985- Honda CMX250C Rebel, I see the similarities with the 1982 FXWG Wide Glide! The frame and wheels are the same...and I love the "ducks-tail" rear fender, etc...only the engine is different!...LOL...! Mr Honda certainly got it right with the Harley Davidson Shovelhead copy! Take care...😉...😉...!
I gave your page name to someone I know lookin for a ride. Lives over here on this side of the river. Don't know if he'll leave a message or not, but I passed it on. Good lookin new ride. I like the older bikes myself, but I'm old so.
I see you have the wider front tire and fender on it. I have an 05 Wide Glide and put a fat boy crome rim and tire on it to see if it rides better than the thin 21" rim.
Got 96ci wg, I'm not a loud person, don't mind yours being as loud as you want and I have no problem riding behind loud.....I just can't sit on top of it, so mine is at the point any loader and it's too loud.....same with my Ultra I hope you kept the Sportster, you'll miss it, even though the wg handles so much easier, I suppose that's true for all Dynas.......handling easier doesn't necessarily mean better......if you want to go fast in the curves the Sportster will whoop a Dyna The grips, I hope you got Harley grips, yes they cost more but after riding with them you'll be glad you got them.....I had some cheapos, put $6 wrap on them ...... Finally broke down and put the ride free grips on......and of course the Harley grips are no glue, the left fits inside the switch housing.....it was pain cleaning off the glue First I tried to fix my desire for a Sportster with a crotch rocket, loads of fun but not a Sportster......hope you kept yours
Hey, man...sweet Dyna wide glide! I like the vintage H-D, man! My boss has a 2003 Fatboy anniversary edition, and it rocks! I would like to have a couple bikes, but only so much room...and MONEY! Hahaha! Thanks for the vid, dude!
Brill, I also have a 98 1340 Super Glide with a wide glide front end, very similar. I've owned Dynas before and glad to be back on one. Re your richness, try the simple things first. Is the air filter clean ? etc...

From what I've been told you don't need to know anything. Tire pressure, oil level, high octane petrol and brake pads.
I see your a St Louis boy, me too. I know where your riding, and that’s a nice bike. I too have a sportster right now, and I’d love to sell or trade it for a Dyna or Softail. Doc
Nice one. I've always liked the Wide Glide. So your selling the sporty? Not enough room in your life for 2 bikes? Enjoy your new machine, I can only guess it's a hell of a lot more comfortable than the Iron. Have a good one.
Afternoon all, is there much difference between the dyna wide and the fxr 1340,,,, I've currently just bought my 1st harley davidson 1200 sportster 1991 starter
I know this is a older video but, what clued you in that the bike was running just a little rich ? I'm fairly good with carbs, I grew up with them. I'm just trying to hone my skills. I've got my bikes running pretty good. even when they're running well I always wonder if they are a little rich or a little lean. a little lean seems easier to spot than a little rich.
Wow I'm super late to this comment. I could tell because of the way the exhaust was smelling. I'm not telling you to stick your nose in the pipe, its just something that comes from experience.
Well look at that. Was this from your long trip on your sporty that made you want to trade to a larger bike? Ohhh and your right Mike will hate on that for sure.....😂
It was that trip coupled with my wife being extremely uncomfortable on the back. She sat on the back of this one and was very very happy. But it was also my craving to get into an older bike. I don’t like many of the new Softails.
Great video, looking for my first real bike that's not a dual sport. There are a few wide glides in my area for sale but I don't what years are better over others , doesn't really matter. High maintenance and leaky as I hear a these stories but it's usually from Harley haters and my Honda Shadow friends.. Lol. Probably going to be my only bike and maybe last one also.. Lol. Any ideas or advice on years and all that there?
had my 98 wide glide 17 years .Absolutely reliable .Get the last of the carb wide glides ( i think 99 was last carb model ) so simple. Just remember to.let her warm up before riding off or you could get oil leaking from cylinders.Awesome bike.
Harley......"do we make a correct length kickstand for the Dyna models....or do we just make an extension and charge our loyal customers fifty bucks for it"?.....guess which option the marketing geniuses chose.....
I've got a black 2001 DWG and just recently purchased a factory purple 2000 DWG, always loved the purple but never saw one for sale until last week and only ever saw one stock at a bike meet so obviously I just had to get it, I'll leave the purple one stock and turn the black one into a chopper probably do a rat build on it so it's the total opposite of the purple one, sounds like a plan anyway. Do you still have it? I'll have to check your channel out for an update..
