Restaurants are closing like crazy in Hawaii due to the increased cost of goods and services, their inability to find workers. Compounded with an increase in minimum wage has definitely put a damper on restaurant activities.
That guy summed it up best... Workers are expected to give two weeks notice, but once again corporations do what they want when they want and when you ask questions it's "no comment" - Don't put your trust in a business. Their main concern will never be you.
True. Why does the worker have to give the courtesy of giving 2 weeks notice but the employer can fire a person on the spot? It's not like the employer doesn't have other workers, whereas the employee most likely only has that one job and unemployment insurance doesn't kick in immediately.
Workers really need to find new jobs immediately, too. Everyone knows staff isn't paid fortunes and for every closing, that staff tries to find someone hiring. That's tthe tough part.
Outback is the last place I'd want to visit for food in Hawaii to be honest. I'm all about the plate lunch and local foods. Surprised they lasted 30 years. Still I respect the workers , so sad for them I hope they find some new jobs.
If you don't live here I get that. You probably have a lot more of the better chain restaurants where you are. To me who lives here, Outback was one of the more affordable steak places to go to. As chains go, on Hawaii Island we're down to McD, BK, Pizzahut, , Taco Bell and Dominos. While I could afford to pay $72 for a steak dinner I'm not willing to do so.
Aloha Outback. My friend used to make homemade blooming onions in his carport in Hilo. I'm still surprised that none of us were maimed or injured, but we have a recipe. :)
This is a dark omen. 100 year old Hawaii egg farm - leaving Countless decades old businesses on all islands are shuttering. Hawaii has been sold to the highest bidder, it appears.
I've seen some restaurants give notice and, in the final weeks or days, staff left to find other jobs. "Had to - I gotta keep making money, and with us closing down, fewer openings exist day after day."
Also Amazon distribution center is coming to hawaii so that will be a lot of jobs that don't even require an interview, you just apply and they hire you but you must make the quota or they let you go and if you break one of their rules regarding safety you will be fired on the spot.
If you really live on Oahu, you would know that Outback in Waipio was the best one. Great staff, dine in and curbside was always packed, and they would always run out of prime rib by a certain hour.
Not surprised. Ours on Maui has been closed for a while, along with the Ruby Tuesdays. It sucks because we have such a limited selection of places to go, and most of them serve the same exact dishes. I'm not blaming anyone, but the service at Outback sucked. They were slow, no Aloha, and the quality of steak was lacking for a steak house. They treated everyone like you were a tourist, and they would never see you again.
Its so painful. Live in Kapolei and dying to get my hands on a bloomin onion, sirloin steak, garden salad, bread and butter, etc. Take out was so convenient. Now I gotta travel all the way to Pearl City and Black Angus and they arent equipped with the same take out I have to go to the bar inside and the bartender is clueless sometimes. Not to mention further travel means steak is alot cooler by the time I get home. Man really sucks
How about closing on the slowest day of the week instead of shutting down completely to cut down on expenses? That's what some restaurants do. They close Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.
ate there recently. Not good so not surprised that they are closing. Hoping that Texas Roadhouse will open on Oahu. Also In-N-Out. Most of the local chains like L&L are really not good.
That sucks! First, Buzz's Steakhouse closes, and now some of the Outback Steakhouses are closing. Gonna be more difficult to find good places to eat for steaks 😢
@@TheAgentAssassin Are you serious?! Did you ever eat at Buzz's? They made the best rib eye, the best salad bar with the most ono sour cream dressing and buttery, garlicky sour dough bread, and the huge ice cream creations!
I don’t know if there’ are either Carraba’s or Bonefish if so those gifts cards can be used there as well, I worked for Outback 11 years and made money then new management started to cut our hours , hiring more waiters it became chaotic had to quit and find another job in order to pay my bills , so sad what’s happening in Hawaii
On Maui the Outback did not pay min wages in 2007. They have that screwy 2 dollar an hour rule that lets them get away with it. I worked at the one near Napili. One paycheck I had 79 hours. My take home pay was 81 dollars for two weeks. I made an average of 100 to 120 tips and worked my butt off 5 days a week. The hostesses only seated people. Waitstaff had to carry a bank in their pocket. Busboys were always out back smoking pot after 8:30. Waitstaff t Had to serve customers until midnight, bus tables and make change. After midight waitstaff had to perform housekerping duties on that tiny wage each noght for sn hour to hour and a half. Waitstaff got 1 percent of their gross food and beverage total reciepts subtracted for hostesses. One percent for busboys and one percent for bartender. Great for bartenders but lousy for waitstaff. Great that Outback is gone. Now maybe a local Hawaiian owner will open a real good restaurant and treat employees better.
Outback Steakhouse sucked anyway. Even Cattle Company blew them away. OS was way overpriced, their steaks tasted like cajun salt meat, and the service was horrendous because of corporate greed in taking profits over assisting employees.
@@LonnieBrewer-dd4wi how so? Because voting the same way is not changing anything either. If you have the same lawmakers doing the same thing how do you expect different results?
@@LonnieBrewer-dd4wi how do you know if you don’t try. In a football game, you’re losing. And you say you’re not gonna try different plays because they might not work. But you won’t know until you try. If you vote and the new party doesn’t work out then vote the previous party back in.
ate there once many years ago.Was not impressed with the food, so never went back. Seemed like it catered to tourists who are familiar with the chain and didn't want to support locally owned venues.
remember now....the name "outback" is NOT your typical Tony Roma's or such, probably dont expect hulihuli chicken, but mainland style barbecue chicken. Also seen some posts that have customers not liking their meals.......lack of satisfied customers? wages going up? food suppliers going UP! that can KILL a business.
Why wouldn't they take their employee's family into consideration and let them know ahead of time so they can find another job for their households? Some of them may not have missed too many weeks of paychecks.
this is so sad 😞 as i’m sure paid parking 🅿️ hasn’t helped! what a huge loss for our local community residents & future i’m so sorry for all in hawaiian land
I wonder why they make it seem as if restaurant work makes up the majority of jobs of the economy? Is being a waiter or waitress or cook a prestigious sought after job? I doubt the closing of this restaurant is going to have any impact on the local economy. If it was Mcdonalds yah that would be a big thing.
You must not be from here. There have been over 50 restaurants that shuttered over the last 3 years alone. And dozens of local favorites during decades before those. Chuck wagon, Sizzlers, Rubens Kahala, Farrells, Kobe Steakhouse, The Oceanarium, Pearl City Ryan’s Grill, Compadres, etc. the list is online.
@@jasestrickland1704 I am a local. How many non restaurants have closed? My point is why is there so much focus on restaurants? Do they really employ that many people? How many people really want to be waiters and waitresses and cooks?
According to current data, Blue states and cities are losing restaurants and other businesses at high rates when compared to Red-voting areas were data shows business is much better.
The corporations in this country are typical and greedy-only thinking about their "bottom line", instead of the people that they're supposed to be helping! I hope Outback goes totally defunct nationwide! The cost of living in Hawaii is also to blame, but even more insane, is that the higher-ups in The Aloha State could really care less about the struggling people who are trying to survive on the islands-not "their" problem! down with Outback and their parent company, and I hope that they go totally defunct!
@@jasestrickland1704 Who said they couldn’t afford to pay those things?! You’re just assuming. It’s most likely that corporate said the profit margin wasn’t what they want it to be, what it USED to be & of course it’s not, we’re dealing with inflation right now AND most importantly the quality of food at Outback has steadily declined over the years… no one’s going to pay MORE for a subpar meal.
@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom Especially when there is so many small local places that dish up great local food and give back to the local economy. Our family never goes to these kinds of chains when in Hawaii.
FYI the design of this is meant to symbolize Outback Australia but ironically this brand is not in Australia......4 American business men invented it who have never visited Australia.
@@anonymous-zn2ivnow I know you’re definitely not from here. Zippys oxtail soup is now $28.00 a bowl. A barrel of chili is almost $50.00 and a 21 piece chicken order is $60.00. Lots of locals have been priced out. If you can’t afford Zippys it means Bidenomics is for 💩.
Higher costs which government is making worse like that nut in the White House. How else to describe all the harmful policies and legislation only the most irresponsible people would promote and implement. Yes, it affects Hawaii.
