My husband is having this exact same problem . He hit a unseen stump leaving the boat launch, at a very low speed. We thought that he was going to have to get into the gearbox and change out expensive parts. I am so thankful that you share expertise with us. I checked my prop and sure enough the thrust bushing is worn out. The rubber is gone. Thank you so much for the info and for saving me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Our 1978 Evinrude 115 hp will be cutting through the water at top speed in no time.
I know how to do all of this. But I like watching your videos to learn something new or a short cut. Keep the videos coming. You have the best boat videos on youtube
great R&R video! All outboard users should carry a spare prop (all boaters actually), and the tools to change it! Can't say how many times that has saved my weekend!
Thanks for this video. My outboard did this today. Couldn’t think what it could be. Was expecting the worse being having to replace the gearbox. I’ll be very happy if I get out of it for just the cost of a new prop.
Great video - thanks for taking the time to make it. I've got an Evinrude 15hp and had my first hub slip... Watching the video helps take away the fear that I'm going to mess things up - and especially liked the emergency fix. Subscribed to your page and looking for more excellent boating videos. Thanks!
It isn't 'fixed.' It's jury-rigged. Don't run the boat with the prop like that longer than necessary; replace the prop or have a 'proper' replacement hub pressed in.
Thx Stu, this did take away The jumping in higher speed, did first check The Clutch but it was The prop, thx for all The help. Great vids you are showing it so every one can fix stuff 👏👍👍👍
Thought I heard a strange sound from my outboard followed by the boat losing forward momentum. The boats been much slower than normal, even at full throttle, and it's had me baffled for over a week. Going to check the prop in the morning. Thanks for the tip.
Excellent content on your videos I'm gonna try this on my boat I'm having the same issue ohh dough not sure it will be the prop bcuz it started after I service the motor mine will go fast but takes to long
Same thing is happening to mine. But my bushing seemed ok and spline on prop was good. I thought *maybe my gears? But it high revs and goes the same speed you were. I may just do a whole prop replacement before i mess with gears. Good video!
Vry incredible tip to drill holes on either side of prop to secure it by placing & tightening by common hardware screws temporary fix until u manage to get a new prop
I love how this chap just gets to the point of how to fix the problem. With a lot of videos I get tired of hearing about what they had for supper and what their children are doing.
Thanks a lot for this. My boat lost traction at a time when I really needed it and it was a scary moment, made worse by not knowing what had caused the issue. Pity there is nothing about this in the troubleshooting section of the manual (Suzuki DF5).
I have been fishing for years, but none of my buddies with years of boat experience as well knew what the problem was. so easy but the bushing is so critical - who knew.
This is quite an interesting video indeed! I have been running my twin Honda 130 HP outboards and I have lost a significant amount of speed. I give full throttle but I was getting about under 3,000 RPM! I was wondering what was the problem so I tried changing the oil as the Honda manual prescribed. This video makes a lot of sense but I'm praying that it's not the bushings in the propellers LOL... Awesome video Stu!
+elspaniard002 Thanks mate. If you aren't getting above 3000RPM then it is unlikely to be the bushing as when they slip the engine can rev quite freely, a bit like a car sitting on an icy road - the revs are high but the speed is low. Sounds more like you are a down a cylinder or something. Have you checked/ changed the spark plugs recently?
Thanks for your reply Stu and much appreciated. I have changed the plugs but I still had the same problem. What I heard someone saying that maybe the mechanic changed the timing of the outboards. Could this change affect my performance on the water?
What year model outboards are they. If they are Honda 130s I'm thinking they aren't very old and will have computer controlled timing that can't be adjusted.
+Dangar Marine . Thank you very much for the information. I haven't been to my boat as yet but I will certainly have those suggestions in mind when I get to my boat. I remember you had a previous video on when a boat not wanting to start and I listened intently to every word. As for compression I do not have a tester. I checked the fuel and drained the vapour separator as well. Checked for sparks and I got them. Also I sent the starter motor to the repair shop but just not turning over. I realized that my battery cables are corroded so the motors are not getting sufficient current to start. I am going to replace them and attempt turning over the engines again. Thank you so much for the information; I've always wanted to know more about outboard motors and you have been of great help!
elspaniard002 Thanks, I'm glad the videos have been helping you. Yes, corroded battery leads are a very common problem out on the water. Let me know how you get on. :)
Hi you post very nice and useful video how to maintain outboard motor. i like boating and i like fixing outboard motors. But now we have winter time here in East Europe I had in my hands mosty all of small motors( up to 20 hp). Best to You
+Evin Fan Thanks Evin, glad the videos help you. It's interesting, I was looking at what percentage of the worlds population live in the northern hemisphere and are having winter right now and apparently it is 88%! I'm expecting views to increase by July. ;) Take care, Stuart
Good to buy spare prop and have in boat just like having a spare tire for your vehicle. If possible, paddle boat to shoreline and work on in shallow water just in case you drop something. May pickup extra nut, nut wire clip. Great videos as usual.
Sorry if this is a repeat I didn't read all the comments. Happened to me years ago too. As an emergency fix pull the prop and insert screws into the rubber parallel to the inner hub. The extra pressure kept the hub from spinning not only long enough to get home but for a couple more trips.
368k views and only 2.2k likes SMH, less than 1% could be bothered hitting the like. Thanks Stu, this vid along with all the others are gold for me. Blessings mate.
Good afternoon All, I have the same issue, boat idles fine. In FULL throttle she goes slow. There's a sweet spot on my Throttle but dosnt go any faster than 1100-1300 rpms. Engine has good compression on all cylinders. Reading about 140 for each. The first thing I changed was the Prop. It was the one with the rubber on both ends so I bought a nice one thats solid metal. Also changed the gear fluid while I was at it..... I changed so many things on this 1979 Evinrude 85hp engine. Started with the spark plugs, boots and wires, coils, battery packs on both sides, solenoid for the starter, the starter, primer pump and all full lines including adding a new filter. I also rebuilt the carbs and had them cleaned in some hydroelectric cleaner that really shocks the life out of you cause i touched the water.... started using high quality gas and i've added SeaFoam to the tank to better the fuel. Still do not know what the heck is going on?!?!?! Thanks for this video, we all have a common ground! -Nic
Hey Nic. If it really isn't revving above 1300 I would check that the throttle plates are opening the whole way. Many boats have a mechanism to stop them revving in neutral, maybe that mechanisms isn't coming off even in gear.
Do you have a video for that? And I watch your videos all the time. You always bring that educational, entertaining, friendly and inviting, functional and innovative experience. I was super excited when I saw your reply.
+Dangar Marine Thanks for the feedback. It idles a little bit low but not too bad. When I got back to the boat ramp (thanks to a lovely couple who gave us a tow) I was flushing the motor and it went into gear fine without stalling. I have since tried putting it in gear and turning the prop by hand and it spins clockwise with a slight clicking sound every half rotation. It doesn't spin anti clockwise when in gear or either direction when it's in reverse. When in neutral it spins and feels smooth. I took the lower unit off recently so maybe I haven't connected it up properly. It's an old Suzuki dt85 1982 model and they can be tricky to get back together.
Great video, I don't understand it to much but it seams just like my problem, so I will get a new prop. It's only a 9.9 2001 merc. So it shouldn't that expensive.
This might be the answer to why my boat has no power it's bee like this a while now and can't put my finger on it I hit the bottom and now I need a new prop so hopefully its problem sorted
I bought a brand new prop that came with the bushing bad, or installed incorrectly. Unfortunately its too late to exchange it by the time I figured out it was bad and I don't want to buy ANOTHER new prop...I'm gonna use that "bodger way" to get by. I'm lucky if I get the boat out more than 1-2 times a year anyway!
Thanks a lot vor this video, just had this issue last night and trying to replace the prop myself, my question is: my boat is in the water and my trailer is being serviced at this moment, would be ok to remove and replace the prop while submerged in the water?
We were fishing a tournament motor was fine at launch we get to the first spot and then want to move and motor takes a bit to stsrt when it starts it makes a different sound and then it was shaking bad motor was running fine besides we couldn't go over 5mph if we gave it gas it died. Our mechanic said our lower unit would was going bad a few months ago and im wondering if it finally went out
Hello. I'm Alex. I have been watching your videos for a while and l appreciate very much your sharing of knowledge. I wanted to ask you if would possibly share some light on an issue l'm having with my 2006, remote control, 20hp yamaha. I purchased the motor used. The issue l'm having is that as soon as l put the gear forward (or reverse) it just takes off very fast. It is extremely difficult to load it back up on the trailer because it will just not go slow. Any help or advice would be very appreciated. Thank you very much. Alex.
I bought a new stainless prop for my v4 90hp 2 stroke evinrude. The prop weighs 4 times more then the aluminum prop. Is this going to affect performance?
Great Video! Been having the same issue with Yamaha 9.9 outboard. Could it be something else or is it always the prop? Thanks for your videos and keep it up :)
I have same problem on my 1989 beyliner Capri 1770 inboard motor start and runs will not acelérate past safety mode or currently limp mode. Do you think it could be same problem ? Please help. Thank you
If I had bought a Solas Rubex 4 Blade 14.25 X 19P Propeller 9513-143-19 would it have lived to fight another day???????????? The ruined prop is a Solas Amita 4 Blade 14.5 X 17P Propeller 1513-145-17 that I used to tow my teen girls on a tube. It did a good job. It still works good enough to be a low speed spare. I unexpectedly crossed a wake (at a 45 degree angle as usual) so big my boat was completely out of the water and I was in the air hanging on to the steering wheel. While in the air my engine revved high and when I hit the water (wham!!!!!!) my propeller bushing spun/slipped, ruining the prop, exactly as designed, protecting the drive train from damage due to excessive force. I wish the engine had a rev limiter. Oh well, I have more props and next time I see a big boat coming toward me I'll get as far out of it's way as possible and slow my boat speed to a crawl. This happened in a narrow channel or I would have been further away from the big boat, and saw it was producing a huge wake . The big boat slowed down when it saw me so I thought the wake would not be very big, I was wrong. I slowed down also but kept my boat on plane. I have never seen a boat make wake this big. If the wake hit me on the side of my boat it would have flipped me over. He should have stopped his boat because he knew what was going to happen and I didn't.
I wonder if this could be my problem. The other day on our 22' Princecraft pontoon boat we found that we could only achieve 10mph and the motor would not go over 4000rpm, full throttle. The next day I played around with the cables a bit but did nothing particularly significant, since I am quite ignorant in these matters. After re-assembling the remote shifter we checked it out and the motor ran wonderfully...hummed along at just under 5000rpm and 15mph. The following day the problem returned, but was worse: could not go faster than 5mph! In neutral the motor revs up where it should, even above 6000. In gear...no way. I stayed at 3000 since any increase in rpm did nothing to our speed and made the motor sound very labored. Thoughts?
It can be tough to test them. You really need to lock the inner splines and see if you can turn the prop without the splines turning. This can be done on the boat in gear but turning a motor like that risks it starting if you aren't sure the ignition is off, even disconnect the spark plugs. Wear gloves because the prop can be sharp. Ideally even lock the flywheel so you can't turn the motor over. If the prop doesn't budge it's probably fine. Just be careful doing this as it can be a bit dangerous.
Question. I did replace these parts and does the same thing. It does engage into gear bit when I try to give throttle it will not go and revs high. Any suggestions or info will be appreciated.
Could be that the dog clutch is worn and slipping or that the gear selector is out of adjustment. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B4acSf_BgP4.html
MY PROBLEM IS DIFFERENT: When I go full throttle my boat noses down and revs up but it doesn't go faster it just shoots a lot of water out the back like it's getting air and shooting a rooster tail. If I slowly increase the throttle it gets to about 30mph but any more than half throttle and it revs up and slows down. Is My motor too big , too high or wrong type prop? Maybe it (IS) just slipping? It's a 16 ft Ski Barge (Formerly made by KENNER brothers) It may have originally had a 50 hp and now it has a 70. Scupper holes in the back are 1/4" above water level.
The plate just above the prop should be level with the bottom of the boat. It sounds like maybe the length of the outboard shaft doesn't match the height of the boat's transom.
Most bearing grease will be fine as it is designed for the wheels to get very wet anyway. I also feel that if you replace it often enough you shouldn't have a problem. Using the right grease is more important with things like steering tubes where you can't just wipe it off again easily.
Hi Dangar ,Isn't the rubber inside the propeller working like a fuse in order to prevent any damage coming to the gear shaft or the engine i.e if you roll a rope by mistake hit the propeller .Also as I know it prevents vibration .Once you fix it with a screw it won't slip but the pressure will be diverted to the gear shaft or engine .I have an inboard Yanmar diesel with Yanmar SZ80 drive I am having the same problem.I though of fixing the mid section of the propeller but I am still not sure .I will be glad if you help
Yes, the rubber bushing is there to protect the the gearbox and drivetrain. I would only fix it with a screw if you are in the middle of nowhere on a trip and you want to use your boat. Having said that, if the prop hit a rock or something there is no way it would have the strength to hold, it would give like an old shear pin would given it is only pressing against the inner section. The biggest problem with this is having the prop out of balance at high RPM. Replacement is always the permanent fix.
I got a stainless prop. Cost the previous owner 500 bucks. Is it still the best option to bjy another prop or is it possible for me to have a crack at doing the bushing?
I've never changed the bushing because I'l always used relatively cheap props. I have heard it is quite tricky to press a new bushing in and have the prop well balanced.
Just wondering you said that it's often cheaper to just buy a new prop. I just got a quote to have my stainless prop rehubbed and it was very very cheap. Less that 1/20th the cost of a new stainless prop. Should I be concerned? Is there something I am missing or should look out for?
So I got the prop back and the outboard was still not working. I came to find out that if the outboard isn't locked down (there's a plastic switch on the back that keeps it from rising up) it will give the same symptoms as a spun hub. It might be worth mentioning in this vid. Love the videos, keep em coming.
You can wind the screws out, but I've never replaced a prop bushing ever. It is very hard to get he prop balanced and probably not much cheaper than a new propeller with clean blades to sweeten the deal.
I have a evinrude70 1977 engine was rebuilt and ran really nice I noticed a wee bit of oil coming out of the propeller when I had my ear muffs on . But Now every time I bring her in the water she won't start but Out of the water she runs like a train ? What is going on please help me Thx 😂
I would start by giving the carburettors a clean. It take very little fuel to the get the motor to idle on muffs as there is no exhaust back pressure at all. Once you are on the water the engine is fighting that back pressure and needs more fuel to run.
Dangar Marine thanks Stu I end up finding a bad ground connection .any way I end up lowering lower unit for a cleaning and must of turned the shift gear Man oh man 5 times I thought I had it but still can't get in forward .
It's not a split pin, it's a cotter pin. Same type measurements for aircraft props, OD, and pitch. I found everyone was running 12x8 props and they couldn't create very much thrust, I went for a low pitch prop, raised the rpm to 12,500 and i now have 8 lbs thrust from a ten cc motor.
i just want to say the part about the guy at the boat shop that says u cant get the hub back straight where it dont vibrate is BS lol its way way cheaper to replace just the hub then the prop. all u do is pound a new hub in the same way the old one came out with a rubber mallet. the hub can only go so far then it will be perfectly straight and ready to go.
hi thank you for all the videos i have a 1995 mercury 115hp i have a problem. when is idle accelerates veri strong, but when i put it in the water doent have much power to push the boat and run faster, so the boat is 20 foot long center console, may be too havy for 115hp, but it was running before over 30mph and now doesn't wanna go for more than 12pmh, any suggestions on what could be the problem?? thank you in advance for any answer.
Hey Greg, I recently had this problem. I bought a prop from a local prop shop and changed the prop, After an hour or two of running time, It started again. Motor sounds great and I don't hear any irregular noise from the lower unit. Have you any other suggestions? Regards, Gary
Hey Greg, no problem, my name is Stuart. :) That is a bit weird. Interesting that it went away for a while then came back. If it was a problem with the dog clutch you would expect a lot more noise and jumping, I don't think you'd miss it. Does the bushing in the new prop look good still?
Hey Dangar, I have a 2008 mercury 115 ELPT 4S OUTBOARD , having some problems with the motor. when try starting the motor it's shaking a lot and doesn't start the same time , have to crank it a few times, then eventually it starts...runs for a few minutes then cuts out , also I have oil coming out at the propella. ...it's like a thin layer of oil on top the water when the motor is running. ...any ideas what might be the problems.
Hi Ramesh. I'd start by doing a compression test on it. It sounds like it might have a blown head gasket. When the head gasket goes it will look compression in one or more cylinders which is why it shakes (out of balance without all cylinders running) and oil and cross over into the water jackets then come out the exhaust which is why you get the slick.
I got a volvo penta i/o when I tried accelerating fast it revved up a lot and didn't go any faster I had to bring the throttle back and accelerate slowly it did it twice when towing a tube it also got a little hot to where coolant came out from the cap can you help with this problem please
my boat with a 28hp yamaha has kind of the same problem what happens is some times when i go slow and hit full throttle the engine doesn't accelarete the first second and then goes but it doesn't happen every time (sorry for the bad english it is my second language and still learning in high school)
Hi Matthijis, it may that the carburettor needs cleaning. Some carburettors have small holes along the bottom that progressively come into action as the butterfly valve opens, others have what is called an accelerator pump that squirts a bit of extra fuel into the carb when you first open the throttle to compensate for the fact that air reacts more quickly that fuel to the new throttle setting. It could also be the float level in the carb so I would give it a full service and then see if it gets better.
Thanks for the response i discovered that i was using the wrong spark plugs (ngk b6hs instead of b7hs) so i changed them still need to test if it's fixed otherwise iam going to rebuilt the carb
just watched this video bc I'm having the same problem with my mercury 9.9 2 stroke outboard tiller steer except I just changed the prop last summer. Do you have any advice about what I should check or do next?
Dangar Marine when it's in forward and I give it gas it does move forward but top speed is maybe 10 miles an hour when is he usually around 20 to 23 miles an hour
yes I got a 1976 mercury thunderbolt 500 50hp 4cylinder outboard how do the reverse cam locks go I cant find a pic no where thay are on the shift shaft I need help bad or do I have to have theme
If you are looking forward information on how parts go I would highly recommend taking a look at the exploded parts diagram for your outboard. Just put the serial number into this site and you should be good to go www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mercury/parts.html
Bit different problem with the same symptom. I have a Yamaha F100A -99 outboard with carburetors. It runs great during idle or high speed. However, when I tried to do waterskiing the engine stalled when throttle stick was turned full at fast pace. It only worked when throttle was used gradually. Propeller is 13.2*21 aluminium. It just does not respond under hard acceleration as I would expect. Does the engine has a accelerator pump, is that part 43? www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/1999/F100TLRX/CARBURETOR%201/parts.html (names are wrong, 43 should be "diaphragm assy 2"). Are the carbs clogged (I have used carb cleaner solvent)? Where is the problem?
As soon as I read your problem I was thinking accelerator pump. As air is lighter than petrol, when you open the throttle the ratio of air gets greater and the motor is stalling due to going lean. If the carburettors were blocked it wouldn't idle or run well at high speed. It will definitely have an accelerator pump, so I would be making sure the diaphragm is in good condition and that it is getting fuel and all the hoses from it to each carburettor are clear of blockages. A good subject for a video one day!
It certainly looks that way, but odd that it only seems to be feeding a single carburettor. My old F50 was from the same year and supplied all four carburettors: www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/1999/F50TLRX/CARBURETOR%20LINK/parts.html
Well, that is exactly the puzzle here. It seems to be the pump but why does it feed only one carb? That is why no one seems to be sure if it really is a acc. pump
+Janelle Farmilow Hi Janelle. Do the motor's revs increase when you try to accelerate or does it say low until it gets going. This will tell you whether it is a problem with your prop like in this video or a problem with the motor itself.
just wondering if you could tell me if this is my problem... I have a Mercury outboard that does the same thing as you said in the beginning of this video. but looking at it when I put it to reverse it would not spend but when I put to forward the propeller will spin so well this fix my problem?
I have a smilar problem? Run her up river last night. Engine is a Sea hores 79 55hp. Just been serviced new starter. She runs smooth but won't go above 4/5mph even a full throttle? Boat mechanic reckons could be the prop? The engine doesn't over rev either? Had enough speed this time last year to get her up on plane. then she sarted hessitating and now first run after winter lye up shes crawling? Mechanic says everything else is running fine. Did check the prop though!
If you have this problem the engine will be revving quite high as there is no load on it. If it sounds like the motor is struggling then I would say it is something else.
+Janelle Farmilow I would definitely be looking at those other three things first then if it had suddenly started doing this. Also check the prop for any deformation or slipping in the bushing like in this video.
Yep same here. I couldn't figure what had changed. My first ride was great. Second ride after an hour or so it started slipping. I tried all kinds of things. Linkage adjust, trim, I was about to hit myself a on the toe with a hammer. This was the first video I watched. Son of a gun. Simple is exactly what this was. Next move was the lower unit... Smh
If you ever do see this sir, just know your videos have helped me a ton over my few years of boat ownership. You're doing God's work helping those of us who can't afford to go to a shop
Another great video as usual. Great info for a new boat owner (I'm a marine tech as well, 8 years experience and I carry both Evinrude and Mercury certifications)
Not super cold here, but we had snow Saturday into Sunday. I have been rigging new boats for spring delivery, and tomorrow am helping bring boats to one of the two boat shows we do every year.
Another great video Stu! Thanks, had this exact same thing happen to me on the weekend, of course it decided to go while I was in the shipping lane coming back, thankfully the freighter had already passed through :) Learning a ton from your videos. Many thanks again!
I was out in a buddy's little 16 foot Boston Whaler with a 92 15hp Johnson on the back experiencing exactly those symptoms. Runs great in the driveway but no guts on the water. Tomorrow the prop comes off for an inspection of that bushing, which I suspected might have been the problem to begin with. Thanks as always Stu for the great informative videos.
@@craigbielsky115 Thats exactly my issue at the moment. Motor revs to full revs with no resistance but wont get past 2 grand in the water and I'm just staring at the sky. Any update on what the issue was? Thanks
