You're right to use the term "method" to describe Hofman. He's a "method" actor which focuses on personal immersion into the state of mind of the characters. One of the greatest acting anecdotes I've ever heard came from the set of The Marathon Man, in which he is portraying a character who has been on the run for several days, and is exhausted, so he deliberately stayed awake, and when he showed up on set in his obviously distraught physical and emotional state, the classically trained Laurence Olivier asked him why, and after hearing it explained, Olivier said "Why don't you try acting dear boy; it's so much easier."

The original “Andromeda Strain” -probably one of the most realistic science fiction films. A bit more thoughtful in its pacing it might not play well in todays rapid edit culture. “The Omega Man” -with Charlton Heston (remade as I am Legend) but enough significant differences and carries the theme of a biological outbreak that causes society to collapse. Bonus points filled with 70’s fashion and cliches and music. “28 days later” -not a zombie movie but a virus movie. “Doomsday”- “MadMax” meets “Outbreak” meets “28 days later “ meets “Escape From New York “ “The Plague Dogs”- animated film that follows animals that were experimented on and their horrible experiences. Tough themes and imagery but I liked it. So there you have a list of virus themed monsters movies across a wide spectrum of styles and genres.

4 Oscar winners: Hoffman, Freeman, Spacey, Gooding, and then you still have Donald Sutherland, Rene Russo, Patrick Dempsey, and Dale Dye…wow!

"Contagion" is, imho, even better. Where this one is still very hollywood-y in its narrative, "Contagion" is more rooted in realism. With the hindsight of what ended up happening, it´s pretty eerie how much that movie accurately predicted. 😮

Interesting fact: the virus they used in the movie is the original Ebola virus with all the symptoms it comes with. They just upgraded it.

"You know about this. I know about this. Nobody Else." I worked in an old second-run cinema when this was showing for a few nights. That cinema scene showing the coughed particles moving throughout the cinema... priceless! You just heard people squirming and chairs creaking. 😂😂😂 I hope you do Contagion soon; it was the #1 streamed movie all year during the 2020 pandemic.

When I was in the Army, I was 74D CBRN - Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Warfare Specialist. We mostly worried about enemies dropping "dirty" bombs, nerve agents (chemical), and anthrax (biological), but we trained for a wide variety of weaponized threats.

It's a cool movie, I really enjoy watching it. Contagion is way more scientifically accurate - a great movie too.

The bomb in the opening scene is a real bomb, the BLU-82 ‘Daisy Cutter’, it’s called a “thermobaric” bomb, also known as a fuel-air bomb, it’s the predecessor to the GBU-43 ‘MOAB’, it spreads a fine mist of aerosolized flammable mist and then detonates the mist, completely consuming the oxygen in the area of effect, these are also called ‘vacuum bombs’ as they create a momentary vacuum immediately after the fireball explodes.

When Casey asks her to hold his hand, and she's already holding it, I don't know why, but that really hit me.

This came out a year or so after one of my favorite books (“Hot Zone, by Preston) - based on actual events. The truth is so much scarier, and at the time…we didn’t just dodge a bullet, we dodged an arsenal of nuclear weapons. We got lucky.

The thing on top of the plane is a radome. A radome is a housing or fairing for a radar. The plane is an AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) and uses its massive radar to spot threats, direct attacks, gather intelligence. AWACS often patrol near the borders of hostile territories because their radars and Intel equipment can "see" hundreds of miles across the border.

As someone who works in a lab I don't know what's dumber-the lab tech not paying attention whilst centrifuging blood products, or a centrifuge manufacturer so stupid that they made a centrifuge that can be opened whilst still centrifuging.

Donald Sutherland's "Are you dumb or somethin'?" has been in my head ever since this movie came out. Such a funny delivery in such a high stakes, deadly serious situation.

“And he’s obviously sick. Don’t eat his cookie.” Never heard that one before.

I think people in the 90s just weren't conscientious enough to see it as a real possibility and saw it more as science fiction with a dose of conspiracy theory (Ironic when you think that now the conspiracy theorists are on the opposite side of believing in the threat of such risks of viral outbreaks)_*

This was the first movie I watched my senior year of college when I set up my first surround sound system (on VHS no less). Hearing the scene during the helicopter chase where they fire off rockets the sound of the rockets went right over our heads, I was instantly hooked on a huge surround sound system. 🤣

I wasn't surprised from the year 2019 to 2021. They wasn't showing this movie at all.😅

Great reaction to this one, Jen. Dustin Hoffman films which I recommend are: "The Graduate", "Little Big Man", "Straw Dogs", "All The President's Men", "Marathon Man", "Kramer Vs Kramer", "Rain Man", "Hook", "Sleepers", "Confidence". There are others, Jen, but I think that these are some of the best.

"Rain Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise is excellent.

When this movie came out I was stationed at Ft Detrick. When they showed 'USAMRIID Ft Detrick, MD' at the beginning of the movie I started laughing because it looked nothing at all like Ft Detrick. USAMRIID is a very small building off to the side of the main gate - definitely not a 6 story concrete pyramid. There were no MPs at the gate, just civilian guards. It was a very unassuming military installation.

Classic Hoffman includes Kramer vs Kramer, The Graduate and All the President's Men

Great movie and choice. I don’t know why it doesn’t get reacted to more often. You should watch Contagion now. Similar type movie with a big cast. A couple of Dustin movies that are good are Midnight Cowboy, The Marathon Man and Tootsie.

Another more realistic but similar movie is “Contagion”. Was surreal watching it during the Covid lockdowns.

The afflicted town was filmed up on the north coast of California, the town of Ferndale. I remember them filming there while going to college. They also filmed the Jim Carrey movie “The Majestic” there too.

Wow! So many A-Listers in one movie! I saw this when I was a lot younger and did not understand how many great actors were in it!

About disaster movies I recommend you: Antarctica (1983), based on a true story about a Japanese base in Antarctica, that because of a big storm coming, the 10 members of the base must abandon it in 2 plane flights, there is no more possibility to take anything else and unfortunately they must leave 15 sled dogs they had in the base abandoned to their fate, they don't even have food, domestic dogs that were brought from Japan, they are not wild dogs, that can fend for themselves, and it is about the survival struggle of these dogs, the movie is hard because of the moments that the dogs must go through, but it is also moving, with music by Vangelis, which is breathtakingly beautiful.

The scary part is that there are a lot of these level 4 labs all over the world.

Dustin Hoffman also has prominent roles in Rain Man (1988), Hook (1991), and Wag the Dog (1997).

Donald Sutherland plays sinister so well.

My favorite disaster movie. Great script, brilliant cast,...I'm just glued to the screen. Never get tired of watching this.😊

Strange thing,something like this almost happened in the US.One of the scientists was studying Ebola in a lab the 90s...Well,he got infected.They isolated him and,miraculously,he survived, and they called his strain Ebola Preston because the lab was located in Preston, Virginia.

Since you asked, Jen, Dustin Hoffman movies that I liked personally are, Sphere, Rainman, Hook, Wag the Dog, All the President's Men, and Tootsie. I don't know what you may have seen, but those six really, and I mean really, display his range. All of his roles in those films are completely different from one another. I never really thought about it until now, but I really like Dustin Hoffman. Have a wonderful day, all.

I think Contagion is a more realistic (and underrated) pandemic movie...but this one was first. I would check out Contagion next though.

The theater that the outbreak takes place in, I saw a stage performance of The Wind And The Willows there.

This movie was intense, it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The cast was stacked and rewatching it hits different knowing what happened back in 2020, also I recommend Contagion it’s a great film.

Marathon Man is a great Hoffman movie. And The Graduate, if you haven’t seen that one already.

They showed us this movie in middle school science class when we were studying viruses. Though it is a movie with lots of Hollywood conveniences, it depicts a worst-case scenario of a viral outbreak that is frighteningly realistic at times. And needless to say, it's highly relevant in a post-pandemic world. Though COVID is nowhere near as deadly as the fictional Motaba, the movie shows the severe danger of a contagious virus that rapidly mutates. It's a cautionary story. COVID might have a comparatively much lower mortality rate than Motaba, we should feel somewhat lucky that it does, as a Motaba-like virus is an extreme yet real possibility.

The original Andromeda Strain is a good one. But the best and most accurate in the past few years is "The Hot Zone" which was a mini series based on the book of the same name. It details the discovery of Ebola which almost got loose in the DC metro area. USAMRID was called in. It was scary and never really made the news.

Always loved this film. Also liked the irony of watching it during lockdown in 2020 & 2021

The plane with the dish on top is an E-3 Sentry early warning aircraft, used for long-range airborne detection of enemy aircraft and missiles, as well as air traffic control in warzones.

"And The Band Played On", about the AIDS outreak. My instructor made my class watch it in nursing school.

The thing i like best about this movie is that the big-ass plane they use to drop the bomb took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base. I used to live there, and there are basically no planes there. That base is used for launching missiles and as a testing ground for civilian defense contractors. That’s the base Space-X was using, until they went to the floaty platform. If there are any big bombs there, they’re at the top of an ICBM. There’s no runway big enough for that big of a plane. So a part of me is all “Yay! We’re famous!” And another part is all, “But they got it all wrong.”

We watched this in the movies when it was release. I sneezed after the movie theater scene and the people in front slouched down LOL!

This was filmed near where I lived at the time, Humboldt County, California. My mom had to find the hotels for the Crew, and my dad's boss and his family get blown up in the pick-up truck.

Not so fun fact: The last case of smallpox was a British scientist accidentally exposed to the virus in a lab in 1978, although she killed herself rather than succumb to the virus. The last naturally occurring case was in Somalia in 1977. Thus ended one of the deadliest plagues in history. We should remember though that both the USA and Russia still have samples in storage, and kids aren’t getting vaccinated for smallpox anymore.

Sphere and Runaway Jury are a couple of really good films with Hoffman in them

There are lots of great Dustin Hoffman movies but I'd start with "The Graduate". "Tootsie" & "Rain Man" were two of his best. If you like thrillers try "Marathon Man". There's lots more too.

When I started at my current job in 2012, we had those fancy hand scanners shown at the beginning of this movie. They were all taken out and replaced a few years ago. I have one of them sitting in my garage as a memento (of the job and this movie).

Some other great Dustin Hoffman roles are Marathon Man, Little Big Man, Rain Man, The Graduate, Papillon (supporting role), All the President's Men, I have always really liked Dustin Hoffman as an actor as well. Would love to see you check out some more of his movies.

The town where they filmed "Cedar Creek" is Ferndale California. I live about 30 miles north of Ferndale, and know several people who were extras in this movie. It was QUITE a big "to do" locally when this was filmed! A friend of mine was the manager of the local movie theater at the time, and Dustin Hoffman dropped off and picked up his kids from a movie.... I showed up two minutes after they left, LOL.

I first saw this in the theater. After that scene w/ ppl getting sick in the theater, every time someone in the audience would cough, it made me very nervous 😂😂😂

I watched ‘Contagion’ in theaters when it came out, and immediately after it was over, almost everyone ran into the bathrooms to wash their hands. I found it very entertaining to see. You should definitely watch it, though, and ‘The Andromeda Strain’.

@20:04 one of my favorite performances of the movie is J.T. Walsh as the President's Chief of Staff (uncredited). He is usually a bad guy or super creepy, but he nailed that short scene.

I watched this in the theater when it came out. Someone coughed in the theater and people began to laugh and some freaked out and told the person to get out of the theater! LoL

Yes, Contagion. Many people reference that film when covid came out. Andromeda Strain is also very good.

I saw this movie in a movie theater. But the roll of film was fed the wrong way. So the image was flipped from left to right. Unfortunately, the audio track runs down one side and not the other. So we saw the audio track running down the side of the screen, and some of the video was running through the area the sound system reads. So it sounded somewhat like the noise of a helicopter for the first 5 minutes until they finally stopped the film, flipped it around, and pulled it through. Unfortunately, the timing was terrible. The main dialogue in that time involved people wearing biosuits that prevented us from even trying to read lips. The last thing we saw before they stopped the film was the aircraft approaching the village. We did NOT see anything drop from it. After a few minutes, they had it worked out and pulled it forward. The next thing we saw was the blast. We didn't even see the suspenseful and mysterious bomb drop. After that, the movie started to make sense, because we could hear it.

I'd come back to watch Contagion! 👍

The first time watching "Outbreak" at the theater, I remember some people were freaked out because of the movie theater scene, and after it was over they were walking out with their shirts covering their nose and mouth, LOL! And you're asking about a Dustin Hoffman movie to check out, may I suggest "Midnight Cowboy". It's a great movie about, well, you'll see what it's about. And I'm sure you'll love it.
