How young is too young to run a full, 26-mile marathon? That’s a question many are asking in the wake of news that 6-year-old Rainier Crawford took part in Cincinnati’s annual “Flying Pig” marathon with his parents and siblings. The little boy finished the race in 8 hours, 36 minutes. Rainier’s father, Ben Crawford, says the boy was not forced to run, but was allowed to because he “begged” to join the rest of his family.

He clearly wasn’t running the whole time to complete the marathon in eight hours and thirty six minutes. If it is something the family enjoys doing together, and they can opt out at any point, I don’t see a problem with it. It’s a lot better than spending the day on the couch. And he clearly prepped properly by having completed a half marathon previously. Kudos to this six year old for completing the marathon! 😱😍🙌

As a long distance runner myself, I know what it takes to run a full marathon and half marathon. I've coached and I know how much stress is being put on the body and mind to be able to perform at a high level. The kid is 6 years old running a full-marathon, not a half-marathon. Believe me, there is no way you're going to find a child on the face of this planet that would willingly want to run and complete a full-marathon. Contrary to some people's beliefs, running takes a toll on your joints, especially if you don't have strong ligaments and tendons. I presume the child didn't take an adequate amount of time to prepare for the full-marathon. Walking and/or running for 8+ hours isn't fun for any child and the parents should know better.

Totally agree. There’s a predictably obvious split of opinion between skeptics of the parents’ intentions given they’re posting his accomplishments on their social media channel and the “good ol’ days” folks equating running 20 mile marathons to biking and playing in the woods. Study the kid to see how his knees and joints develop. I’m no expert but children in indigenous tribes can probably run those distances without an issue, however they tend to have different body types (e.g. Kenyan ectomorphs) and they’re running on vastly different surfaces and climates, as opposed to concrete or asphalt in New England weather.
