In this video we talk about outdated things that are still common in Japan. When we first arrived in Japan we were shocked at some of the outdated things that are still common here. While the image of Japan might be super futuristic full of robots and bullet trains you may be shocked to find out some of the low-tech things that are still everywhere in Japan!

WHO WE BE:
Hi we’re Theo and Ashley, a British couple who decided to pack up and move to Japan 🇯🇵 We spent a year living in the countryside of the northern prefecture of Hokkaido before moving to Kobe City! We’re documenting our time in Japan by making videos about things we find interesting, without being too serious.

The blackboard might be old school, but how about the little eraser vacuums to get the chalk dust off the erasers? That’s some futuristic stuff

That is a very good point, but its like inventing robotic horse to pull your wagon when you could just buy a car haha

What the fax! I started working in 2005 and shortly after I was auditing some stock broker's bank because they had changed company name after an acquisition so the banks wouldn't confirm bank balances without the proper authority. So I had to fax 103 different banks 😭it was the worst week of my life and was super happy when scan and email happened thr next year. Although I did have one friend who had a fax machine at home which she also used as a photocopier!

As Theo says “Bonkers!” Maybe an outdated phrase perhaps (only in USA)? Haha... The chalk board in classrooms ties into the paper using society. Smart boards are quite clever as an instructional tool. What do fellow teachers and school administrators say about this suggestion? Do they even know that many parts of the developed world use this as common instructional tools for the classroom?

The CD and DVD thing blows my mind a bit but another thing to consider is a lot of people don't have home internet, so they *can't* stream anything at home without killing their phone data plan. Living without home internet is truly unthinkable (for me) but a lot of people here do it. The pocket wifi situation, basically buying a SIM (even if it's prepaid) requires a registration process with a store employee and it's a process. My friend had to help me do it when I lived in Tokyo. So, for travelers it's probably easier to just rent the pocket wifi. Lastly, I also absolutely love the prevalence of arcades. Sadly, a lot of famous arcades have been shutting down in Nerd Town (Akihabara) which is really a bummer. Hopefully the trend doesn't continue. Over the past 6 months, I've become massively invested into a rhythm game and frequent the game center all the time.

@@missplainjane3905 nah they have it but there isn't unlimited data like in the states it's all tiered plans still I think. Super annoying. And full time streaming in HD at home regularly crushes through data obviously.
