Hmmm, hanging planters on the West Coast here (British Columbia), are lush. Things grow amazingly well here and the hanging planters are huge and plush with foliage or flowers, you don't even see a pot most of the time. They can be done without a pot so that it is just a huge explosion of flowers or foliage. A sad little petunia hanging in a pot where you see nothing but pot sure, not so desirable, but the hanging planters I have seen living here are over the top gorgeous.

As a fellow west coaster I agree, here on Vancouver Island with our temporal rainforest climate, everything grows lush and beautiful. That said I have seen many hanging planters with geraniums that don't "spill" so mostly all you see is the plastic planter - that makes me cringe.

I don't agree about the hanging basket. You can chose ones that are not plastic. You can have lovely trailing flowers of vivid color which coordinate with your exterior design. Actual color! Shock! Or you can put a boring bush in a planter. Unless the bush has interesting foilage... I think it is just the lazy persons choice. Flowers are like a garden. They need tending and care. And you can take cutting and bring in fresh flowers. Dark purple trailing lobelia contrasts lovely with many plants. Annuals can often have a wonderful fragrance which will fill your yard with scents. Lavendar is another nice one. Obviously you're more into simple designs. Easier to set up and require less maintenance. Roses are also nice, but that is probably a no for you? They require some maintenance. I love the outdoors so I guess I don't mind. I would go crazy cooped up inside all the time playing with steamers, cleaning, straightening. Too much fussing with cleaning and entertaining to me anyway... 😉 And no on rockers? Funeral home look? I have not seen these kinds of things at the funeral homes in our area. Maybe it is more common in your area. I do have large high quality ceramic and terracotta flower pots all over. They are really heavy to move though. I do believe lots of little pots look cluttered. I prefer large accent pots here and there. And I don't like plastic furniture either. There are some that are very comfortable though. You seem high maintenance?

I like statuary done well. If it looks like a mix-matchy eclectic mess, no, but a nice garden statue that speaks to you or something about you, yes. If they don’t clutter the space, which is the key, they can be great. The problem is some people don’t know when to stop…

@@txpatriotgirl Yup! I had a neighbor that loved pinwheel characters. She would prop them up on top of the fence between our yards. She liked to look at them from her kitchen window. At first I was fine with it. I like seeing the wheel spin in the wind. But she kept adding more and more and more. Fat ladies bending over, hill Billy character, farmers in overalls, cows, pigs... dogs, cats, etc. It was horrible and tacky. I love statuary. I have wrought iron sun dials that are in the shape of a globe and spin on a tall wrought iron base, aged copper pieces, stone bunnies hiding in the foilage, wrought iron sun faces... I l love the natural aged patina they have. I also love to have various clematis growing here and there. Jackmani is my favorite. I also have outdoor patio and yard lamps that are black and very classy looking plus they keep me from tripping in the dark. They are also nice if you entertain on your patio at night. Yup. Which is worse: large plastic containers that can be moved to a sheltered spot in the winter or large terra cotta urns that are too heavy to move and have to be covered with a tarp for 4-5 months? In Wisconsin, we have to consider what to do with everything once the snow flies. It's the same for here in the West..our winter temps drop drastically and those expensive pots can't handle it. It's too heavy to pick up with soil inside especially if you have to walk up stairs if you don't have ground level back porches. I will stick with my plastic planters.

Valentina’s choices and suggestions flow with her interior. Matching outside to inside is what you should strive for if you want a cohesive look and feel for your home, no matter your personal style. That said, I’m sure she prefers we take what we like and leave the rest. You can put a salt wash paint treatment on big plastic pots and make it look like concrete. If you do a hanging basket right, it would be hard to argue it’s not beautiful even though they are usually messy. 1 TBSP miracle grow + 1 TBSP Epson salt weekly will make any basket luscious. I’m thinking anyone buying the dinosaur eating the gnomes isn’t watching her channel, so there’s little hope to help those folks😂

I have a large fiber/plastic planter that holds a 8-year-old hydrangea standard, which stays outside through all four seasons. It’s modern in shape. The trick is to either spray paint plastic to look like concrete or add smaller concrete or terra cotta pieces next to the plastic container. Concrete cracks in freezing temps and too impractical to move back and forth.

Large concrete or porcelain planters will definitely crack in cold weather climates in the winter after a few years. Places that sell them keep them empty and upside down to prevent cracking. There are very nice looking composite ones that look like Terra cotta but can withstand the deep freezing of our Colorado winters. They are not inexpensive and still have weight to them, but can be moved with effort.
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Год назад
The way to avoid cracking of large concrete or porcelain planters is to not have them sitting on soil. I have several large ones that are at least 7yrs old and are perfectly fine. Some sit on pebbled concrete pathways, some on our driveway and one sits on an old stump.
@dianeosgood6594
@dianeosgood6594 Год назад
@Evelyn M DO you leave soil in them? Or empty them out for winter? Here in Colorado we can get snow and freezing weather in September and May. So, you can have it all potted up and get a super late snow end if May or really early snow in September with your plants in it. A lighter weight container allows you to move your potted up plants into the garage for surprise snow. I find they eventually crack. But, it may take some years before they do. But, our weather can get very cold.
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Год назад
@@dianeosgood6594 What I was told, which is what I do is to not have the pots filled right to the top so that there is some space for the soil to expand and contract and to never, ever have the pots sitting where the bottoms will be wet both inside the pot and outside the pot. If there is not a place to sit them as such then to put them on small feet to raise them off of the ground. I do live in a fairly mild winter area on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. The coldest we get, and that is only once or twice every few years is about -15c which is 5 degrees fahrenheit. Hope this was helpful.

Exactly my reasoning! I bought plastic pots ,sprayed them each with dark chocolate brown spray paint, let that dry, then I took spray cans of stone looking paint( Walmart has it) Various stone looks. Spray 4-5 layers of “ stone “ , letting each layer thoroughly dry in between layers. Your preference as to how you want it to look. Then when completely dry finish with spraying with clear coat to help protect it from weather . I was very pleased with the results and they looked like a much more expensive pot! One other thing I do to save money is to use a 2-3” layer of plastic bottles to take up some space and save on potting mix expenses. Also makes the larger pots lighter and easier to move around 🙂. 10:30 pm

Oh, I do buy plants in plastic containers, even hanging baskets! And I save the large containers from year to year! But, I spray paint the new containers flat black.The black recedes so you notice the plant and not the container and it brings continuity to the containers. The last years containers I clean and again spray paint them for a new pot look, if the paint has peeled, just use some sand paper to sand down the edges where they pealed and spray. I can have varied pot shapes, tall,med, small in a grouping. I don’t like the tara cotta pots because the dry out to quickly, have water mineral stains and break when the wind blows them over. For hanging baskets, the basket should be 18” plus,to give the flowers enough room to grow for the season and to only water once a day. Sorry Valentina, I’m sticking with my coordinated black plastic pots. That have plants that I have also coordinated with chair cushions and table cloths for a cohesive look upscale look. I agree sometimes it's better to go for style as it lasts longer and can cost less in the long run, however there are some textured lightweight planters that would be much easier to move when filled with compost and almost indistinguishable from stone, I also like strawberries in hanging baskets!! but everything else is just right for mex

My only problem is I see these gorgeous furniture sets, but putting the cushions away at night and then taking them out again ( if no rain predicted) is exhausting. How do people do it? One time I just covered them up, and the mice had a field day chewing through the cushions. Now I put them each night in a deck box ( which is not exactly chic). Valentina, do you leave yours out? ( I do like the little concrete bunnies in my garden tho….)

I keep mine in a deck box with an outdoor S chair on either side of the length facing the conversation area and one at the back length facing the ocean view. 2 pots of Rosemary and 1 pot of lavender on the front length in a triangular formation. I am looking for a none rain holding, heavy, flat tray of some sort to sit on top, one that the wind won't blow away. It does look very chic.

I had a rooftop garden at my place in San Francisco that I cultivated over the span of probably 5 years and it was amazing. Massive cactus, succulent vines trailing everywhere, and eventually even things I had never planted there showed up 😊 it was crazy and wild and lush and unkempt with ✅ modern furniture lol and everyone loved it. I miss it. I’ve now moved to the desert and am planning my outdoor space, which will necessarily be more sparse because of the heat and pretty much zero humidity, and that’s fine. But when you’re already way out in nature you don’t really need much ornamentation- the environment does it for you! My opinion is your garden is allowed to be your playground. I love a stupid sign or a big angel statue in a garden. And put up something bright red to get the hummingbirds to come around! 😊

Enjoyed today’s video! I’ve always had an aversion to everything you described except the plastic urns. I do have a few that are made of a composite material that mimics real stone that I personally like, but they do need to be edited too. I’m gathering my ideas for a more Zen approach to my background yard design.

Great tips as always. I myself am not a statue fan, but of course to each their own. We have this awful "frog" thing on our waterfall that my husband has had FOREVER....there were two, but one "broke" in a storm...(hahaha-I may have helped) and the other I've painted twice as it fades in the hot sun.... I have decided to give this thing the boot TODAY. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes the hubby to notice. 😂

I have found so many lovely pieces from second hand stores for outdoor seating. I absolutely love gardening and I love an evolving yard. I follow a Master Gardener from my area and she has the most dreamy front and back yard. She even made stepping stones and a sidewalk with broken pieces of pool tile. It is in designs and swirls of cobalt blue. Like I said just dreamy and filled with all kinds of color. Little pathways, steps, and zones. If my yard becomes a fraction of hers, I’ll be satisfied. Oak leaf hydrangeas, lush ferns of all types, annuals in many colors, vegetables, and hellebores! ❤❤❤

1. Setting the focal point to be hallow and changing like plants or flowers. 2. Not thinking much about my view from the dining room or table. These are my two mistakes that I am still dealing with right now making a few changes and right now successfully made my lounge area, symmetrical and solid to be the focal point of the outdoor patio and still working with my view.

Umm be careful of terracotta pots in cold gardens, all mine cracked with the intense frosts over Winter, now going to literally costs 1000's of pounds to replace. This time I will be going for the reinforced or concrete pots that will last a lifetime. If you can't get large terracotta pots indoors or in a green house to over Winter, think twice about buying them in cold areas.
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Год назад
Large terracotta pots should never sit on soil in the winter or yes, they will crack from the frost heaving. The soil does not let the bottom of the pot dry.
@Ophelia_1668
@Ophelia_1668 Год назад
@@EvelynM-vlogs None of them were sat on soil, they were all on proper chucks and they all broke this Winter, too cold and basically they all shattered.
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Год назад
@@Ophelia_1668 That's such a shame, maybe put a plsnyrf plastic pot inside the terra cotta pot. Not all terra cotta pots are made with good clay. Some are definitely too porous, which means they hold a lot of water within their clay, expansion and contraction will definitely shatter them. The porosity of the clay is usually country specific.

I do want to interject on the plastic containers. I’ve seen some beautiful paint projects on these containers, and I have to say, they were quite nice. They made them look old, and rustic. I happen to agree with you on the plastic containers, except that you can paint them. A lot of these concrete planters are so expensive, and if you have the budget, go for it. But there is an alternative. It’s incredible what you can now do with paint.

Hei Valentina. Thank yu for another honest video. I so do agree on most of your views. I think most people dream of a big italian terrasse with big furniture and plants, but in real life we are stuck with small balconies. So I often see a scale mismatch...too big furniture and often for many friends. On my terrasse I keep a few chairs for my husband and me...and if the whole family is coming over for BBQ we bring out our big table and chairs from the inside dining area.
