I made these metal railings for an outside gate that had block columns. This was a very nice project I got to do for a client. I also made the metal gates for these which I will post another video.

Inspired to get a welder. Though I haven’t welded for at least 30 years so I imagine there’s been huge improvements. One small niggle though. The fact the decorative pieces don’t all flow the same way would drive me mad. The one on far left of the final finished shot is opposite to the other 2.

Hey Jimbo, picket spacing is quite simple really. The way I do it, lets say we have 67.5 inches that need to have pickets in there. If I want it to be say 5 inch spacing, then I would do 67.5 divided by 5. That equals 13.5. So then I would either do 13 pickets at just over 5 inches, or 14 pickets just under 5 inches. Lets say we go with 14 pickets just under 5 inches. So now I do 67.5 divided by 14 which equals 4.821. that is close to 4 and 13/16th's (4.8125) So then I would do 4 and 13/16th's center to center spacing between pickets. 4.8125 x 14 = 67.375. So the last picket would be only 1/8th out at the end, which could be reduced to a 16th by moving the last 2 pickets. Hard to get much better than that!
@SlapHappy
@SlapHappy 2 года назад
And to space them out instead of cutting a piece of wood at 4 13/16ths inches what I do is just use a tape, measure out to 4-13/16, 9-5/8, 14-7/16, ect. Until I get to the end, and then mark the same on the bottom piece. Then everything is square and easy to weld up just need to lift it to center. Also, when calculating the amount of pickets, like in the above comment, always cut 1 picket less because the last picket is actually the post.

Hey Jimbo! When building sections of handrails, we find the center of the section and mark multiples of 5 inches in each direction from that center point for our spindle placement. Each 5inch mark is the center of a spindle. This simple technique keeps our 1.75” spindle spacing between 3.5 to 4 inches (spindle spacing code in KY) Using this technique, starting in the center and working out, would make each end of the section symmetrical. And would let you know how many spindles you would need. Hope this helps in the future. Thank you for all this great content!

Tip. For spacing, without math, get a rubber band and you draw lines on it spaced equal and the stretch it out and you will have even spacing. There is also mechanical tools for spacing too, that you can make too. Here is a link to one. (Not promoting the page just first to show up on Google). djaimports.com/d-j-a-picket-spacer/ These are two options to do spacing without math.

Good stuff! I've only done this a few times, but find that measuring spaces and assembling things according to a certain measured block doesn't necessarily work as good as you think in practical terms. With wood it can often be more difficult as the variations can be greater. There are things that can distort your consistency by just a little - which in turn can throw you out of what is tolerable. I learned this when I built a swing-gate for a school. I didn't have a proper rig or table to weld on which I think is key in good fabrication, and would have made my work better. In my opinion I think that equipment matters A LOT in efficiency and good fabrication. As a welder you need a lot more tools than you think if you want to make good money. I think it would be great if you'd one time talk about your equipment and what kind of stuff you need to be able to operate on your level. Love your content and work. I think you've got a pretty decent workshop with a sweet fabrication-table and welders. Your work always looks well thought through, with an eye for detail!

In order to make equal parts out of a line, you need to divide the total length by 2*n where n is the number of parts you have, that way you have the single step length....

I usually make panels a little shorter. Tabs will bend when tightening. If columns are significantly out- see if 1 is plumb then adjust other panel end.

4:50 - Yeah there is math. Length divided by how many pickets you want. Eg. 1000mm / 20 pickets = picket every 50mm (or 2 inches). If you want to use pickets wider than your gaps then you would need to bring picket width into account. Grab a centering ruler and away you go.
