Fascinating episode. Wildlife rarely phases me but it's the two legged animals that make me stand up and take notice. Like you said about the guy on a bike, I have been in similar situations. My friend and I were getting ready to hike a longer day to the next campsite because of a guy. A Scouts group showed up and we told a female leader that we were feeling uncomfortable and asked if we could squeeze in around their group. They were more than happy to have us. Always trust your gut!

I solo hike and camp with my dogs. I always bring my Garmin InReach GPS emergency transponder with me and leave information with a friend on where I am and when I should be returning. Other key pieces include a really good headlamp, a mil-spec compass, and a backup battery for my cell phone and headlamp. I also keep a few water purification tablets, some toilet paper, and a lighter stashed in the smallest pocket of my backpack, my day bag, and my web gear (just in case). Keep up the great work!

I just bought the ReqQLink 400 PLB for peace of mind on the tail and in case I get injured or lost. I can't wait to use it this fall on the AT in ME, incl. the 100 Mile Wilderness.

One thing to add. When thinking of your risk don’t just think of the probability. Also put the probability to 100% and if the consequence is too great to take than even if the real probability is low 1%) you need to mitigate it or eliminate it. It is always 100% to those that it happens to.

Great information! Yes, compasses help! Years ago on a family hike, our sons Fischer Price compass helped us get back to the road!! So embarrassing but a valuable lesson we all learned. We keep paper laminated maps in our truck, next time I will take it with me on a hike. We do have the SAM splint, thanks Austin for showing how to use it properly.

Thank you for the video. I'm older and a little wiser now but when I was younger I would not have thought of many of these things. I see many young, and older, people camping now and these are important things to think of. I'm interested in car camping on the weekends and, duh, did not even think of the car equipment I should have and know how to use it. Very helpful.

Thank you for the safety videos. I'm about to go camping in bear country and want to be prepared. Because of the first aide video I was able to beef up my kit and feel more prepared and been practicing how to use them.

Thanks for posting this. I am planning on camping by myself, my first time ever, and this is essential stuff to know. I am in NYC, NY, so the first thing I will do is buy a compass and an NYC map and familiarize myself with how to use a compass. I always had fun as a kid playing with maps and compasses. It is time to brush up on those skills.

Really great video!! My take aways were the redundancy...if you lose your pack, maybe have a fanny pack too. Never thought of that. Also, seriously considering a beacon. I like to hike in the Michigan UP and northern MN, where there are multiple spots with no cell service. Pricey yes, but worth investing in if going in the back country and I am typically solo so...thank you Amanda and Austin. Trust your intuition!! Oh my gosh go with your gut people when traveling/camping. Great video!!

A PLB or satellite messenger is so important for those emergency communications when you're out hiking. Hopefully you never need it, but it sure is nice to know that you have a way to signal for help if you ever do.

1) let trusted people know when and where you are going, and when you plan to get back. Be specific. 2) bring an analog map and know how to read it. A compass also helps. 3) always bring a first aid kit. 4) check the weather and be prepared for seasonal surprises. 5). Bring emergency water, food and shelter options. 6) if in bear country, bring bear defense. 7) always carry a knife. 8) never leave home without your towel. 😂 One comment about having equipment you don’t know how to use. It’s ok if you don’t know how to use all of it yourself (although it is very good to know). Sometimes it’s good to have things that others can use on your behalf, either on your team or for search & rescue. It’s kinda like having jumper cables and not knowing how to use them, but the person who stopped to help you knows how to use them but doesn’t have a set themselves.

Another good idea when camping is to have a campsite perimeter security to alert you if an animal or an intruder has entered into your campsite.

The UK doesn't have predators like grizzly bears, cougars, wolves, and large animals that can charge like moose, elk, deer. A firearm is sense of security, especially if alone, from such threats.

Also bear spray is a one shot deal. So you spray once and it's done. A fire arm can be shot numerous times and also used to scare something away from you.

That story I told with the guy on a bike is the only time I've been out camping where I saw someone that made me feel uncomfortable. At the time, I was dispersed camping in the national forest, not in a designated campground. When I am camping alone, which I actually don't do as much anymore, I do carry a gun. I only recently started carrying one after becoming trained and proficient in how to use it this past year. I'm really glad that you're enjoying these videos with Austin. I'm so grateful to have him on the channel to share his years of experience. Let me know if there are any other topics you want him to cover on the channel!

That's a good question. I'm not aware of any courses that specifically train outdoor guides, but Fieldcraft Survival does offer tons of courses on a range of topics from medical, to navigation, to survival and more. They are a great resource to get training, but as far as guide-specific training goes, I unfortunately don't have any recommendations at this time.

I was wondering what you guys think is best to protect yourself on hikes in bear country? Carrying bear spray in a holster seems to be a no-brainer (and knowing how to use it), but do you recommend anything else? Are Bear bells a good idea?

The only security is a gun? Nothing else? I think there is a lot of things besides a gun is available for security. I taken one or both of my 2 German Shepards, a can of wasp spray, a can of pepper spray and a taser are placed where I can quickly access them. I also have some of those loud horns that come in a can. I lock everything important away at night or if I’m off hiking (no temptation) and leave out only things I’m ok leaving behind if I have to take off. I have solar motion detector security lights on the outside of my rig and I have a pair of mans big boots I got at a thrift store and put them out by the steps along with setting up 2 chairs as if someone else is with me. My keys stay on me or they hang next to me when I sleep. In my planning for the trip I research where I’m going and it’s got security if I’m in a campground or reviews of any camper reviews who often note any problems. If I feel uncomfortable at any point I listen to my gut and leave. It’s kept me safe for 60 years.

For camp safety we have trip alarms. 22 cal blanks with a trip line that alerts you that something is coming your way. Add to that 2 12 ga. tactical shot guns with #4 buck.

@@martharunstheworld So why does amandaoutside feel the need to have firearms training and carry a gun? The US has more civilian guns than people which is more than double the rate of the next most gun owning country of any size (Saudi Arabia). Even lawless Afghanistan has a tenth the rate of gun ownership. The US has way more gun related crime than any other developed country. So yes I made a generalisation, but the figures don’t lie. Just look at the civilian guys at the Capitol Hill riots in their combats with so many guns. I can think of no other country where that would be allowed, or even legal. The US has a big problem with guns but most people think it’s ok. The NRA is paying too many politicians. What do you expect - half of all politicians believe Trump won the last election despite every lawyer in the land throwing out all the court cases (Rudi excepted!).

The UK has a lot of violent crime and more attacks with hammers and other items that can kill people and car bombs. Of course, by the time you criminalize everything that can kill people, you'll have nothing left and people will still be murdered. Should I think that ALL Brits attack with hammers? Sounds like I should. The US is divided into 50 states. Every state does things differently, so use a little more sense in your thinking the next time you want to say something you know very little about. And btw, stop reading the liberal press about the NRA. They have nothing to do with crime. They're all about gun safety and criminals don't give a fuck about that. LOL!!!

In 2020 survey roughly 32% of Americans own all the guns in the country... seems I remember the number being 330 million guns.... almost 50% of all the civilian owned guns in the world...LET THAT SINK IN ... about 120 firearms per 100 people... yeah, it's crazy... and there are so many people sitting in jails right now who would be free if their guns had not been so easily accessible... used to be people would step outside and settle their differences with their fist or whatever.. now they can quickly put a slug in anyone who disagrees with them and spend the rest of their lives in jail...cannot imagine how many people would gladly give up that one moment in their lives and take back that impulsive deadly behaviour that forever changed and ruined their lives...but please realize this, MOST AMERICANS DO NOT HAVE GUNS OR WANT THEM...

If you are considering a response about the firearm and you are from Europe. Just STOP!!! For some reason, you all think that every single American is the same!!! Not all of the US allows this and not ALL Americans (the majority) do NOT carry, nor do they want to carry a firearm. In state & national parks, it's forbidden. It just seems to trigger all the incorrect responses. So, please, do your research and talk to Americans BEFORE commenting.
