The ashes have been building up in the Woodmaster 4400 so it was time to do a double shot ash removal.

HAY DAN. WE'RE BURNIN' MORE THIS YEAR THAN LAST FER-SHER... LAST YEAR I WOULD EMPTY THE TRAY MAYBE ONCE A WEEK OR SO... NOW I'M EMPTYIN' IT EVERY OTHER DAY... I'M KINDA OF PROUD TO SAY WE'VE ENDURED ALMOST A FULL WINTER HERE, MINUS A WEEK OR TWO... I NEED TO ACQUIRE SOME RAW MATERIAL TO HAVE SOME FINISHED PROUDUCT FOR NEXT SEASON... HOPEFULLY, BY THE END OF MARCH WE SHOULD BE RENTIN... THANX FOR THE NOT-SO-POPULAR CHORE REVIEW, SOMETIMES WE ALL WISH IT WOULD EMPTY ITSELF " FAT CHANCE " WELL STAY COOL BROTHER, PEACE...

Ha yeah if it would empty itself that would be nice...I tend to put it off as long as I can but that final touching of the wood will always be needed...one, last, time. lol

This model has the option of an auger and grate system to put in, but the more moving parts ya have the more problems ya run into...at least that's how I looked at it...lol...shovel works fine for now.

Dan, Great Video as always. Very informative. Good news my Friend, I am being Released from the Hospital today. Also 1week till I can Cut Wood. I have to limit it to 1hour a Day and rest. To all you Woodhounds for your Best Wishes. I do the Same with my Stove, Stovepipe, and Chimney, every Month. It's great to use but Maintaining it is the Best Way to keep things running smoothly. You just gave me a good idea of Wearing a Respirator when you do it. In the meantime take is Slow and easy, that is the way I am going to do it from this Day Foreward. Great news to hear you're back from the hospital and will soon be back in action. Just take it easy and get plenty of rest. Keep on the road of recovery.

Good idea to use the respirator. That was a crazy amount of creosote, never seen it that up close.

We have to clean out the Hardy H4 a little more frequently, but the grates make it a little easier. Still, like you, we have to watch the creosote buildup, mostly in the bottom corners. Good video!

Very smart idea to use a respirator for this dirty but needed job.

My basement wood heater, when run properly, at a higher temperature that you run., like around 200 degrees F on the chimney thermometer, generates very little creosote. We have to shut down during some mid winter warm days, and clean the chimney, and before starting up in the early winter, clean it again. The creosote is all dried out and flaky, not like your blobs! The first time we ever burned our wood heater, we had a chimney fire due to not knowing what the heck we were doing....but we learned quickly! HA HA 40 years now we been heating with wood in the coldest portions of the winter when daily temps do not get above 40 degrees. Of course, we live in the central USA, not the north like you guys!

I have never seen globs of creosote like that. Really, I haven’t. I bet that’s dangerous.😄 Will it burn if you put it back in there on top of the wood? Just curious cause that’s a bunch.

@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood 7 месяцев назад
Yep it'll ignite and burn if put on open flame...not sure why it's like that hot tar look and consistency. Once it burns it becomes the dried flaky stuff that's usually on the sides of the door so it must be something to do with it gathering and being at a certain temp....warm enough to not solidify but not hot enough to burn... 🤷‍♂️

That much solid creosote and that puddle is a sign that you are filling it too often and with too much wood. Guys with big OWB's ( over sized for demand) have to make sure they load before they have a huge heat draw or they can creosote up bad. It really is best to let it burn down once in awhile and just keep raking the coals around while the blower is on to burn everything up. I have a Pacific Western with 650 gal water storage and 500,000BTU's heating 2 houses and a big shop. Flaky creosote is okay as that means you are at least eventually burning it and getting the BTU's out. @@Back40Firewood

Have a suggestion for you. I build a coal Lake out of half inch pipe. What I do is I pull everything forward and then I use my call ring to push blue the ashes and it normally grabs a good chunks of coals. I pushed out to the back of the board. Put all my stuff on the shovel. And poets dumped it into my tracker. That way I have been finding out. I can keep my coals and get 99% of all the ashes out of the barrel just to suggestion what? Hound bug in North Carolina.

Hey Dan, I appreciate your channel, us home or small usage viewers can relate to your content. This year our usage seems to be less due to milder temps or it might be my old butt not too energetic 👨🏻‍🦳😀.
@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood 7 месяцев назад
My wood usage is down as well...and I think the warmer temps contribute to the creosote build up due to the boiler not going through burn cycles as often.

Be carefull about leaving the coals in the bucket, its most likely made from high strength steel, which will loose strength, and will warp from the heat.
@waynetharp
@waynetharp 7 месяцев назад
Why is his little thin trashcan not all lopsided from having the hot coals sitting in it for days on end ??? Yet this is enough heat to warp that thick tractor bucket??? I am no rocket scientist, but I am gonna go with...Not a chance in the world of this ever happening!!!🤓
@sethsevaroth
@sethsevaroth 7 месяцев назад
@@waynetharpash is very insulating and disperses the heat. Direct contact with hot coals however can burn up the galvanized coating on the bucket and it will eventually rust through. It's also not great for your health to breath in.
@waynetharp
@waynetharp 7 месяцев назад
@sethsevaroth Original poster was implying the ashes would warp the bucket. I have been scooping and pushing up burn piles my entire life and have yet to cause any visible damage to bucket or coatings. People just like to worry about everything...Even breathing galvanized burning can be flushed out with a tall glass of milk!
@sethsevaroth
@sethsevaroth 7 месяцев назад
@@waynetharpall I was saying is it could still damage the bucket but unlikely to warp.

@sethsevaroth I looked at Kioti website earlier and they don't say what their bucket is coated in, that I could find...It says their rock buckets are powder coated so maybe they use that on their buckets also. IDK

Don't leave hot coals in your bucket. It will indeed mess up your paint/ powder coating and compromise the steel strength. I know from experience 😂 thanks for the vids!

When I'm done burning I'll clean it out as best I can, but there's always gonna be some and impossible to get it all so I do the best and get what I can cleaned out after I'm done burning for the season.

Oh the lovely stink of dealing with an outdoor woodstove. I used to take care of my dad's when they would go to Florida and hated how your clothes would stink like creosote and smoke.

So Google says creosote can be used as a wood preservative, and a cough suppressant... the first one yeah I'd say throw that stuff in a bucket and save it, but I don't think I'd be taking a spoonful of it to control my cough 🤮
@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood 7 месяцев назад
lol...yeah this stuff makes you cough if anything. Nasty odor but once it cools it becomes hard as a rock...it's like it's at that in between temp of warm enough to be somewhat tar like but not hot enough to burn. Cuz when it's put on an open flame it lights right up and then once it burns it becomes flaky like the creosote that is usually on the doors and sides. 🤷‍♂️ 😆

Not sure why bothered to clean it out with that few ashes in there and removed all those hot coals that are heating the water. I usually let it die down much more than that and take the cooler ashes from the front and then pull the hot ones forward.
