Outdoor Wood Boiler Update! (20 Plus Years of Use)

We have a Hardy outdoor furnace. Need to get a few parts to get it up and going again. Really liked having the mess, ashes, etc. outdoors. Never was a major burden as I checked on in at morning and evening chore time. In really blustery weather we'd do a late evening check. Thanks for the valentines day tribute!!! Lost my wife of 44 years 2 years ago, but she's never far from our hearts!!!

I wouldn’t worry about the age. As long as it is not leaking, you are good. I have a 1995 CL 40 that is still going strong. Installed in 1996 it is the best thing I ever did.

I have a 2005 central boiler as well. Still going strong. Cleaning at the end of the year I think makes all the difference in making it last. Awesome video.

One year we refilled the wood supply in January. The next morning we found a grass snake curled up in a barn jacket. Figured he came in with the wood and thought it was spring. Mom was none to Happy.

The smell of a wood fire is like new mown hay or a thunderstorm.

Your dad is so right. I have (2) wood stoves in the house. And in our 100+ year old farm house there is no shortage of fresh air getting 😂in the run the fires 🔥

My house has a super old woodstove in, not efficient at all but keeps my house warm. Hoping to invest in a boiler sometime so I can heat my garage and pole barn too.

👍 If you have access to firewood, a boiler is the best way to save money in the winter.

I've been using an out door furnance for 25 years, on my second one now, I don't split wood , just cut it to size that I can pick up, this old brick house is always nice and warm, ashes work good on ice, best if you have your own wood lot.

The ash is also works amazing on ice for grip. It works better than sand. Just make sure you don't spread nails around from the old boards that were burned, tires don't like the nails... ;)

have something similar here in central ireland for over 40 years about 20 years ago it leaked for the first time mid winter ..........we made a platform out of rebar and slid it into the fire box and had the fire on top and the water trickled out under the platform out the bottom if the door .........it was far from ideal but we were able to see out the winter and got the boiler relined during the summer after ............

How old is that furnace. I have a Heatmore out door furnace. 23 years and no rust anywhere stainless steel

The best heat I ever felt was my grandparents house. they used a coal furnace til the late 1960's. Man, was that nice.

I believe that portage and main will be much more efficient. I did away with my outdoor boiler 20 years ago! Went to an indoor boiler but put it in a shed that worked really well and burned a third the wood! Just went to a soapstone stove by wood stock stove company and wow so far this winter in north central Pa I’ve burned a little over 1 cord of wood! I was burning 20 + full cords of hood hard woods a year in my out door boiler and that’s when I still had my cows and no help sure was a workout

So right about the fire inside the house... Only by the grace of God my Dad caught a flue fire when he did --- came close to losing the 🏠. The wood furnace pretty much sat idle since that frightening day. Thank Y'all for sharing. Much appreciated 🙏 👍

I’ve had my wood furnace for 41 seasons. It’s a Volcano II from Defiance. Made in Michigan. I’ve changed the blower motor 3 times, the thermostat 1 time, the ash pan 1 time & both cast iron grates. It’s got a small crack at one corner of the door opening & it’s warped inside but it’s been a good wood furnace.

Thanks for the boiler update. My CB 6048 purchased in 2006 is still going strong too. I have a wood shed next to mine to keep the wood dry which is especially important if I have to replace this unit with a gasifier . After all what would we use our chain saws for if we did not have our boilers, I have four and am always looking for the next one. Going to keep burning wood because I can. Thanks again.

Love to see that! We have been burning corn since 2001. Corn was cheap then and now I help a young farmer and part of my pay is corn. I say doing the work keeping it going is like doing chicken chores, a little time each day.

I usually spray my solinoid with WD 40 once in a while and it seems to help keep it from sticking. I have a central boiler also. Another good video 👍

I burned mostly soft maple in a Heatmor outdoor furnace. It heated my domestic hot water and my garage/shop. I had to quit using it for health reasons and my son (who had been a 'victim' of getting wood during his teen years said 'Dad I am not cutting all that wood'. He paid to have a propane furnace installed. Can't say I miss cutting wood all the time.

You may have more time left with that boiler than you think! It’s hard to say. I just had my CL 40 (same size as the 6048’s) with a build date of 1994 repaired and it’s still going strong!

I have a central boiler outdoor boiler we love it. I considered a corn burner when I bought it but I thought why would I burn something that I can either feed or sell when we always have downed trees to clean up on the farm. And like you say we're here with our cattle anyhow we don't go anyplace so we're here to take care of the stove. Far as the advantages of indoor outdoor I will never go back to indoor because all the fact that the dirt the bugs the ashes and the fire are all outside

I have similiar machine installed in 2008! Still cranking! Aboslutely love it, nothing fancy to it and hope it keeps going for years!

Aaron-I thought about the original wood boiler video the other day. I said to myself they need to do an update video!

You could prolong the life of the solenoid by giving it a few drops of 3in1 oil on both sides of the magnet once or twice a season. I'm a CB dealer in southern Vermont. We can't sell the classic boilers as they are not EPA approved. We can sell Classic Edge gasifiers and pellet stoves. These new HDX boilers actually do burn close to half the wood of the Classics. I always tell prospective customers to run those older Classics as long as they can. Since Covid, prices and availability are crazy.

Water sampling is key to keep the water jacket in good condition. My dad and uncle both have the same stove as you do. There stoves are 32 year old that is no BS. they water sample very fall. My dad has soft water and he needs to add water condition every fall. They have not had any leaking.I have heard good things about the portage and main. Good video

We have the smallest Portage and Main Boiler since the fall of 2012. Very reliable and lots of heat for our big old house. We have 200 acres to clean up along the fences rows, there is no way to keep up with the dead and fallen trees. People who think we cut live trees for firewood just don't know how things work in the real world.

Our wood pile burnt up about seven years ago. Thirty face cord gone. We have a heatmor put seventeen years ago.

I have been burning out doors for over 35 years. My current boiler is a woodmaster 3300 going on 20 years. I agree with all your comments. You can "mix" wood and get rid or some of the marginal stuff. Also I burned a lot of wood chips one winter. I would put wood on the bottom and shovel chips on the top. Worked well and better than wasting them. On your bug comment I was putting wood in one sub-zero day and came across a large wasp nest. The nest went in the stove with the wasps!

On my third Central Boiler, first was a new 5036 for the vacation property, second was 10 yo used 6048, third season it developed a leak, bought a new example from a dealer in Baraboo, had a shiney new 6048 in stock, it's all hooked up and running perfect. Leak in the used unit proved to be a rusty drain plug, tapped a 1/2" pipe thread, installed new plug, all good. I think I'll sell it, a good deal for a new owner, Central makes a good product, I'd have a hard time changing personally.

We have burned wood 100% since 1978 in our house. We have a neighbor who has one like you and someone shot 19 holes through it. He didn’t realize it at first so when he fired up the stove, everything was warped to pieces.

Do you put the ash from the fire box in your corn field to fight grubs they do around here

If U put it in a shed U would still have to have a really drafty shed so it could get air cause I am pretty sure it sucks some air. My thought was to put a carport over it that way your firewood could be kept kinda covered. What do U do with your ashes? I mix mine into manure pile and spread on fields.

I have wood heat in the basement. I have thought about switching to an outdoor boiler with heating my shop with it as well. I'd leave the indoor furnace in place for backup if we had a long term power outage and just keep the fire going in the boiler to keep it from freezing. I like the idea of a roof over the front of the boiler plus a covered area over the wood pile on cement. I think just being discipline with keeping things tidy is the best preventative for fires inside or out. Inside fires required dry wood. If the fire is starting to have trouble with the draft don't delay clean your chimney today. I have a cleaning system that allows me to clean the chimney from the clean out in the basement in about a half hour without having the fire completely out.

The biggest thing that I don't like about NY outdoor boiler that I've fired, (4 different ones that my neighbors have) is the amount of wood that they use. I physically can't burn that amount in my indoor furnace running wide open

One thing that comes up (speaking of possible new laws) is the carbon going into the air. I think folks forget, or don't know, that if it rots in the woods that CO2 goes right back into the air. So, like you say, it's not for everyone, but if you're near the fuel and have it anyway, then there's no reason not to get use out of it. In fact that's oil/gas/elec that you're conserving. Anyway, thanks for the update. And good job on the greeting card at the end!

On your wood furnace can you talk about how you treat the water

Good video. I was considering one of those for our last house. We lived out in the country and had propane heat. If we happen to have a hard winter it would get pretty expensive heating our old farmhouse. Now we are in town, have a smaller home with natural gas, so we are doing pretty good. There are a few videos out there where a guy made his own out of an old hot water tank for a firebox, welded inside of an old, oval shaped fuel oil tank. As a welder by trade, maybe I'll make one of those for a workshop out back...in floor heat? Yep, that sounds nice! Have a good day, God Bless.

One of the key things is water sampling. I do my own and keep the PH up.

We have a Garn smokless boiler since 2010. It burns the smoke so you never see or smell smoke.

Great video. Central Boiler must be the best on the market, I have talked to friends that have them for 20 years with no leaks. Have you folks heard of putting a mixture of anti-freeze and water in the system? I have heard most other brands last about 10 years, I was considering an outdoor furnace to replace my basement wood furnace but decided against it.P.S. very smart to buy a new one,considering the price increases we have seen over the last year. You must have a good crystal ball.

I enjoyed the video. I don’t think it will work for us-no trees! And even if we did have them, no snow to scatter the ash over! 😂 They have to haul in firewood here around West Texas to sell to people to burn in the fireplaces.

Our community does not allow outdoor wood burning furnaces. It has to do with houses in close proximity as compared to rural areas, and people with asthma and other breathing difficulties, especially children, having to breath the smoke in the air. Some people have put these in their attached garages, which the community has no control over, but I would agree that this does put the family more at risk.

idea..go out in the woods and dig up several rock maples and line your driveway with these beautiful trees...they turn red and yellow in the fall.

A friend had a boiler and he followed recommended testing. Years down road the manufacturer closed. No more warranty. Wouldn’t you know it, it started leaking.

so at the end of heating season after you clean out the fire box do you put or paint on the inside of the fire box with a lite clean oil to keep it from rusting over the summer?
