Bamfield is the end of the Pacific West Coast Trail, a Marine Science Centre of teaching by a group of 5 western Canadian universities, a historic trans Pacific cable station, several fishing lodges, assorted fascinating citizens and the recently renovated Outer Shores Lodge. Challenging to get to, either a float plane fly-in (when weather permits) a 3 hour ferry from Port Alberni (on scheduled days) or an hour-plus drive down 80 km of dusty gravel road from Port Alberni. About 4 and a half hours from Victoria by car, three of that is to Port Alberni on paved highway. The deluxe lodge and separate cabin offers well appointed rooms, top quality seafood forward cuisine with paired BC wines, and activities suitable to reflect the academic and cultural leanings of the two marine scientists who run the operation. Is the reward of Outer Shores worthy of the challenge of the trip? Bamfield is still a gem, the remote location has preserved its beauty, its the gateway to the Broken Group Islands park and likely the best land based point to visit Vancouver island's remarkable wildlife and marine activities. This video will provide an overview of what you may encounter if you venture for this adventure.
