TODAY we tidy up some loose ends and prepare ourselves for the next phase of the project!
Our little GT6 has seen a lot of work over the last several years... not just the restoration of its bodyshell, but also the complete and utter re-imagining of it's drivetrain. The LS4 and T5 got finalized in their new homes last time, and today we push on towards the next phase of the build.
Pilot bearings (or bushings) are a cheap, yet pretty crucial part of a drivetrain… without one, you’re going to have troubles! But what do you do when one doesn’t exist for your project? You make one of course! Bushings vs bearings has been an ongoing topic for decades, but whichever you choose, just know that it’s not an area to skip over quickly - no matter how simple it may seem.
With the car finally standing on its own weight we are able to roll it outside for some beauty shots, finish up the rear toe links (like we’ve been meaning to do for ages) and take things up a level with some Jenga Blocks! … I mean, wooden show stands!
The new custom driveshaft rounds things off for today and gets us in good standing to push on with the next “exhaustive” push for the car.
Stay tuned!

Why would you use an LS4 in a rwd setup?
@maker-matt
@maker-matt 3 года назад
You are producing (by far) the best build video series that I have seen on RU-vid. It's on par with the old "power nation" TV series except that I like your presentation better. and the fact that you are actually doing the work yourself and that its done in your garage not in a million dollar facility that did 3 other TV shows. not to mention this is (again as far as I know) a unique build. LS4 in a GT6 - WOW - when its done I am sure it will be an amazing ride and have the ability to absolutely SHAME most supercars. I cannot wait to watch the first drive, tune (engine and suspension) wheel Dyno, and finally performance testing. ---- Thank you
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 года назад
Very kind of you to say Matt - that's a huge compliment! I think like with Chris Fix, there's something tangible about a project that real everyday people can afford. The small space just ads to that! 😂 Never heard of anyone else putting an LS4 in a GT6, an LS1 yes, but only one car seems to have been finished (LS1GT6.com) ... we join you in counting down the days to driving, tuning and testing! Glad to have you along for the ride with us man 👍

-Maker Matt, this is a great series for sure but it seems you are missing out on some others: May I refer you to Bad Obsession Motorsport's Project Binky, Retropowercars' Retropower Uncut and Urchfab's Mongrel
@maker-matt
@maker-matt 3 года назад
@@Mr_Spegru Nope seen em both, and would not own either one of them. But this GT 6 is a work of art, it's a guy and his dad in a single car garage that is producing what appears to be a Chip Foose quality build. I am not just blowin smoke either. I built a badd A$$ V-8 Vega back in the day (1988 thru 1990) It was quick for a street car and I drove it quite a bit, but nothing even close to what this GT 6 is turning out to be. My stars, the work done just to fit the starter should win some kind of award!
@maker-matt
@maker-matt 3 года назад
@@FanatikBuilds And I meant every word of it. As I said in another comment, just fitting that starter motor to the LS4 should get you an award. All I could do was subscribe. And its not just the build. You video and CAD quality + your presentation style makes me think you are talking directly to me. standing there next to the car with couple of beers because it's to late to be spinnin wrenches. (Ooh, that would be a goon name for a channel, no? "Welcome to spinnin wrenches" today we feature a buld from......) I may have said too much...

Was watching another video that identified a clutch stop (limiting throughout travel) was required to keep from over engaging the clutch. You probably already knew, but if not, you can add it to your todo list. Cool solution to the pilot bearing - all I ever used were bushings, so I learned something. The other issue was the steering gearing was so high it was almost impossible to turn the wheel fast enough to catch a spin. Looks as if you have fixed that too, assuming it’s not the original rack.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 года назад
Thanks Murray - we've tried hard to improve everything we've touched! The steering rack is the factory one but it's been narrowed, and along with the new steering arm geometry, it has decreased the turns lock to lock by a good margin. It should help make the car feel more modern and direct (not to mention a bit safer as you say)! Hope you'll enjoy the rest of the series! 👍

Thanks for the feedback! 240Z was definitely the influence ... Also check out a GT6 made by Markus Bewley, he's done a nice job! I'd love a scissor lift - just the expense and relative space it takes up that's the issue there. Maybe someday though!! Cheers my friend 👊👍

My '72 GT6 is sitting on one of my scissor lifts right now. It is great for general work and maintenance, but I think in this case they need more unobstructed chassis access under the car. And hey OCD isnt really that bad when it comes to dimensions and double checking! I have it and coped with it... U r doing amazing and its coming together beautifully and wish to see this on its first test drive and amount of power to unleash on this beautiful aerodynamic body!!! Its a strong come back for glorious V8 Classic British Racing cars!

Thanks Blaq! Appreciate the feedback on the spoiler! Wheel choice is an extremely personal opinion, and we stressed for way to long before settling on these - was a toss up between them and a Minilite-styled Rota wheel. The Minilite's look good, but are very typical for the car so wanted to try something else, and we're really glad we went with the Grids! We join you in counting down the days to taking it for a drive - can't wait! Cheers man 👍👍

Yeah man, I'm digging the little ducktail! It makes the car looky cheeky. My only suggestion would be to sculpt it a little and integrate it nicely into the body so it looks like it's supposed to be there. Kinda like your deletion of the drip rail above the windshield.

@@FanatikBuilds Dude, a nice chin spoiler, a cheeky ducktail and those nice fender flares y'all did before hand.... that'll make for a sharp little ride. Dare I say it might almost be worth removing all the drip rail at that point to really smooth the profile.

I like the little spoiler and the de seaming that you've done works wonders, but I was also thinking it might look better if you lose the gutters, just from after the rear quarter windows....maybe curve them down behind the window a little too. It would really change the look, though if you were getting just a little tired of welding by now, I really wouldn't blame you.

Thanks James! We've considered removing the gutters - much along the lines of the Lemans GT back in the day... not really sure about it though as we actually don't mind the look with them. Haha, yes, the welding was also getting a bit old by that point 😂 Thanks for the input though!
