I travelled this summer with my mother and grandmother (75 and 94) and we wore matching outfits to the airport there and back. Dark wash denim jeans, bright white T-shirts, hot pink blazers, and matching luggage sets. We could hardly make it through TSA and the concourses because of all of the compliments we received. With each compliment my grandmother would say "Thank you darlin'". We did look GOOD!
I use to love dressing up going with friends to bars and clubs. Most wore low cut and trashy tops but men would whisper I was better dressed because I covered up. Lol
*Isn’t belly fat the reason a lot of women end up doing frumpy,* because it hides their bellies? A lot of these tips, though great, accentuate the waist, so they won’t work for these ladies (tucking a shirt in would especially be unflattering for them). Any ideas for them? ❤
Structured shirts with rounded hems and buttons look more elegant that shapeless square T-shirts and tunics while still covering the belly. The row of buttons down the front makes the figure look slimmer. Store bought shirts usually have simple buttons but it is easy to replace them with more interesting and/or better quality ones to elevate the simple shirt to a designer piece.
Nikol, I love your videos! Your style is wonderful! I love simplicity and elegance. I am a little older and have seen a lot of trends come and go. Your feminine, well put together look is refreshing as I think people have gotten a little lax. I love your linen shirts especially. I live in Southeastern Oklahoma and think they are so practical!
I get it. If it's Fall or Winter, still put on a belt and then wear a blazer. Maybe add a long rectangle scarf that drapes downward. It hides half the fat.
I have found shapewear to be essential for those areas of the body we want to minimize, whether it's belly, thighs, hips, there's a style of shapewear out there that will smooth out and minimize. Also, jewelry accents really help to draw attention to an area. finally, no one is perfect, everyone has something that they don't like about their bodies, so part of it is accepting yourself as you are, and knowing that you look the very best that you can, and guaranteed you will look better than most people you meet! Smile and know that you are more than what you weigh! :)
For me, when I see someone beautifully put together, it makes me feel better too! Like "oh, don't they look lovely!" I like to tell them as well, and they seem to appreciate it. Spread the positive feedback. ♥
Dear Nikol, I adoree your videos 💕 I’m a girl in my 20s and you make the process of maturing exciting and something to look forward to, unlike so many who try to avoid it like the plague as if it isn’t beautiful and natural. Thank you for gracing us with your confidence and elegance 💖
I agree with most of your tips, but the one about men tucking in their shirts - on this one, let’s agree to disagree. Unless they’re suited up for work or some business or dress event, I think the tucked in shirt looks stodgy. I much prefer the cool, laidback look of an untucked shirt. I guess it’s really a matter of personal preference.
I agree with everything except the tucked in shirt for men, I love the relaxed look of a semi fitted buttoned up untucked shirt unless we are going to a special event.
A lot of what people think of as frumpy on RU-vid is actually their negative perception of larger body types. Put the same trousers on a size zero, and some influencer will rave. But on a size 16, it’s immediately tagged as frumpy. That’s why I suggest watching someone like Diedra or Beth Dijali who are not a size zero. Much more realistic for most over 50s.
I am a size 16 and I think just because I am round in the middle does not mean I can't look my best when I go out. Yes I have to plan my outfits but I am more confident when I take pride in myself.
@@SandraScott-ri9gd I think what she meant is that the style tips given in this particular video only work for women with flat stomachs, and most 40+ women do not fit that category.
Oprah may be ample, but she also has an hourglass figure (or, at least, that's the way it has always struck me, though I don't really watch or follow her much). Nikol talks about creating a waist, and she is very good at that. She seems to be built pretty straight up and down, but being as slim as she is, the belts and cropped jackets do the job. I'm an apple shape, and a belt on me, unless there is a cardigan or some other layer over it, just serves to emphasize my lack of a waist. Ditto a cropped jacket. They look OK from the front, I guess, but horrible from the side. I am overweight, but not obese (per BMI charts), and mostly fairly well proportioned except that I gain weight around the middle, and especially my lower belly. Trying the trick of tucking in a shirttail, or even half of one just shows off the one truly unsightly part of my body. I do wear my share of tunics, but my preference is for a hem which comes down over my belly, but is cut higher on the sides. I think I dress pretty well. I do like watching some of Nikol's videos, but, face it, she could make a burlap sack look like high fashion if she strutted it down a catwalk. I have not seen her do any videos (to be fair, I have only seen a few so far, so I may be wrong) where she illustrates how her tips will make anyone look good by showing the same styles on a variety of body types.
Thanks! I am frumpy personified. In the last 3 years, I've lost over 100 pounds. I'm in a fight for the last 40 pounds and changing my style. A healthier weight and over 50, and I dress HOW? Goals!, casual but elegant without a snobbish vibe
Eat protein, fiber, fat together st every meal and snack. Example: banana, peanut butter, flaxseed sprinkled all on toast or alone or in yogurt. Protein+fat+fiber. I hope this helps with the 40 you want to lose. Clapping for you.
The airport slays me, I cannot believe what people wear, it is so easy to look clean, neat and stylish, it's seems like so many people just wear pajamas. I for one hope that many people take these tips and try just a little harder, your life will change. Dress for what you want to achieve whether it is a job , a relationship, whatever. When I fix myself up every day I feel so much better about me and the world at large. Great video!
I absolutely love, love, love that Amazon classic dress that you are modeling, and I too would have purchased it in evey color possible. It is perfect! I agree that belting it gives the style that is needed. I prefer the look of the thinner belt, but I can see how it does not cover the back elastic area. Because I am only 4'11" and plus size, a thicker belt would not personally work for me. I would love to see you do a video addressing short, plus size women, and their dressing options.
Hey Nikol! So you are so helpful in my journey! I am 68 and was a high-powered whatever for all those years and had a work injury and am trying to rebuild whoever I am after 6 years. I still have a fashion style because it has always been part of my identity and work life. And personal work life. After all that and much rehab and reinventing with the Grace of the Universe that I am still here, just appreciate you and pulling back things of myself to incorporate what I used to do that I want to take forward. Thank you so very much. You have helped me remember pieces of me that I am starting to remember after a brain injury. God Bless! Keep it going on Girl! Love you!
I can totally relate. It can take time to shift gears so don't be too quick to discard the old you. The new you will also be wonderful but give yourself plenty of time to make the shift. XOX
Love your style! I hate going to the airport and seeing how people dress. Recently have flown quite a bit and I swear people are flying in their pajamas.....it actually depresses me to see people not caring. As for the men with their shirts untucked, I think it depends on the style of the shirt. I love my husband in his Tommy Bahama shirts but they are made to be untucked and I always think he looks great. Dress shirt is completely different - tuck that in and put a belt on. I live in Texas and I love to see the cowboys in their boots, jeans and crisp shirts all tucked in - no matter size, they all do it!!!!!!!! Looks so good on them!
I love my mom and grandmother..role models.. ..everywhere they go just compliments ..always looking stylish ..my grandmother still rocking her fav lip color at 92..they don’t spend a lot of money but they always rock a look..
Mine also. Always looked beautiful and really had little money to splurge. You either got it or you don’t. We were very fortunate to have those genes 😀
@@beverlynorris557 My mom even looked nice doing house & yard work ! She had coordinating tops , shorts & pants & often matching sneakers ! Not expensive , just put together . Also rarely saw her w/ out a dab of lipstick in a soft natural tone for day but a shade deeper for dress up . Her two sisters & mother did the same ! 🥰 Tough acts to follow ! 😊
This is so needed, Nikol! My late father was always impeccably dressed (and smelled good too). I take after him and try to always look my best when I leave the house. People notice. My girlfriend’s son in his 20’s remarks how I am the most pulled together of all his Mom’s friends. It’s a shame that people just don’t seem to care anymore. Some friends too just can’t be bothered with makeup. A little can go a long way. I admire a well dressed man or woman. Also, I believe men are trying to hide their big stomachs hence the untucked shirt but they are not fooling anyone.
Men wearing untucked shirts to hide big bellies can have medical problems that cause big bellies. Diabetes, like my boyfriend has. He also has a heart condition. Dialysis at home causes a HUGE belly. One of my male friends has that. Anytime he goes out he wears a shirt untucked in order to be able to go out. Judge not…especially men! They just aren’t as intelligent as we are. They have at max half the brain cells we have. Medically proven fact. Google it.
I could mot agree with you more Nicol. Someone once told me there is no difference between A RUT OR A GRAVE AND THAT SAYS IT ALL !! Let's dress for success⭐️ Love from Blighty🏴❤️
My grandfather came from Torino Italy. He was a barber. He always dressed impeccably, smelled so nice! Consecutly I have a nice wardrobe, I am almost 70 yet still can stun everyone. I never apologize for owning designer shoes, purse etc. I love my signature scent. People always think I am 10-15 year's younger than my true age. I highly recommend classics. Thank you for your post🧑🦳 Regards Toni
Agree the frumpiness factor has increased exponentially in our current society. I think part of the problem is that athleisure wear has become the norm for all ages. Women have lost the art of dressing nice & feminine on the regular. I get wanting to be comfortable, and we can still look nice & be comfortable. I have a friend who is the epitome of frumpy & she claims fashion isn't important to her & it shows. But she's happy, so who am I to judge? I love fashion & feeling good in my body & clothing, so it's odd to me, but again, to each their own.
The main problem is that we haven’t had “Fashion of the Decade,” since the 1990s, which was itself, barely fashionable compared with the previous decades.
You’re her friend. Take pictures of her then send her the pictures to her. Tell her that you love her. That you were taught to “dress up for Jesus” every Sunday. What could she possibly say to those things?
@@carolynhart1241 lol! You have a great idea, but I still think she has a right to her feelings about fashion & she's hurting no one (though maybe herself in some ways?) She's a frumpy plain Jane & will never change. She's just not into it & trying to change her isn't my goal. She has to want it herself to feel good about it.
@@tennilledebysingh5819I completely agree. She has you as a resource, should she decide that she wants your help. She may need help, but I agree, she has to want it and be willing to change.
I have to absolutely agree with all of the tips! I know for me, I have a signature look that I absolutely love every summer, and it's a soft, midi dress in a pretty color, and then I top it with a color matching chiffon Duster. I'm tall and I can carry it. And then I love accessorizing it with beautiful jewelry and a nice summer shoe. I also absolutely agree that the i-don't-care look has become its own style, and it's really horrible, whether it's men or women; our children are seeing this and It seems that people are rebelling against what is appropriate and what isn't and the lines get blurred. I remember when I was enrolled in classical ballet school (60s) that also included charm school, we were taught that a woman looks beautiful when she cares about the details. So before you went to bed at night, we were grilled to make it a habit that your nails and hands were tidy, your stockings were crisp, as well as your hems and your slips and your dresses were always neatly hemmed and ironed. And these ideas didn't matter what size you were. Men as well should be careful about how they dress. My son who is now 40, still wears a belt and tucks in his shirts just as he was taught when he was young and, as with dress and grooming, your manners should also be impeccable because what good is a beautifully dressed woman who has a trashy mouth?😊 Another little detail: I noticed that when men wear dress shirts, they do not wear t-shirts underneath which I think is a travesty! Clean, white t-shirts protects the dress shirt from perspiration and prevents the dress shirt from looking tacky. So I absolutely agree with everything you stated. It's not about being stoic , it's about caring what you look like and what image you're trying to project in the world. Men, Women and children should reinstitute proper dress and grooming. Great discussion! ❤
I so agree. I would always put myself together just to run errands, go to the market, etc. During the last few years, casual lounge wear has become my norm. I am so over it, I am now focusing more closely. You just feel better when you make the effort, and it makes people around you feel better also.
Funny, I take my nephew to the gym, and my niece and I got hiking, so most they always see me in athletic gear. When my neice and I do something else, I make an extra effort to dress classy/feminine just to be a better role model for them. 😆
You are absolutely gorgeous inside and out and I try to follow all your tips, but it’s very hard to follow your style tips when you are short and plus size. I wish there was some help for us.
Thank you once again for the timely encouragement! I’m finding people don’t expect to see me put together and when they do, it’s pleasant! I’m 68 and recovering from 4 major surgeries in the last 1 1/2 years. Yes, I struggle to walk with a cane but I’m put together. I do this for me, for my pleasure in life. ♥️
My husband looks better in an untucked type of shirt, because he is rather portly. Many of his shirts are cut to be worn untucked. I, very unfortunately, am quite petite and have the shortest torso ever. I look like a sack of potatoes at 105 pounds when I try to tuck a shirt even just partially or use a belt. As much as I would love to be able to do that, it doesn't work. Tunics and shorter tops that come to the top of my hips are my go to. Living in Tampa with a "feels like" temp of 106 degrees and 85% humidity many days makes wearing an outer garment such as a sweater or blazer rather impractical. Wish I could and look as wonderfully stylish as others, but I know what looks better on my body type. Love all your videos, Nikol...and your make-up, too!
You are the most up to date classy women. I am a Young 77 women and I will dress your style which is so me. Love you keeping us looking the best no matter our ages. 💕
Stunned at the elevation in the look of the shirt dress with the addition of the belt, turning up the sleeves, and loosening the neckline. You are so wise, Nikol, and so genuine.❤
I agree! I took a new dress - very flowy, fitted at shoulders dropping to a wide A-line at the hem - and added a wide belt just to see if I could mimic the green dress effect. Wow! The belt transformed the outfit.
I love your premise and hints. I live where it’s so hot a jacket is usually too much. And belts can feel suffocating. I’m short waisted and belts used to be flattering now not so much. You’re on to something here. I’m wondering about your using others to model with different body types busty, hippy etc. maybe show some tailoring before and after I do think the idea of fitted vs loose is better for older women. The challenge for me is a casual yet pulled together look I have list of what they used to call glamour donts. Mostly I feel sad when I see people in cringe worthy looks. But then again I don’t understand how young people dress so dreary either.
I also live where summer temperatures under 110 are considered a cold snap. Jackets are out most of the time for me. A plus petite body brings challenges too.
So many are overweight that belting and tucking seems to them that they're accentuating their area of least confidence. Flying requires going through extensive security checks that we weren't subjected to until the 90s. They want to wear things that don't require a lot of fuss to remove and put back on. Also, needing to be at check-in hours in advance, to wait in long lines and depending on time of flight, they could be sleep deprived so they plan to sleep during flight so they wear things that are comfortable. Commercial flight was something for the well heeled in its early inception and passengers dressed accordingly to their social status. I agree though, the way people dress today looks sloppy and unkempt. Thanks for the tips.
I knew I was not crazy for being so particular about how people should present themselves. I’m 32 and I’m the friend who encourages self love, self care and just caring about one’s image. The generation ahead of me used to look amazing in their 30s and it’s women like you that make me look forward to aging beautifully. Caring about how you look can really boost your self esteem and boost your confidence. Comfortable clothes don’t have to be unflattering
When you have a bulging midsection .. it’s hard to belt it or tuck anything in . Feels super uncomfortable and conscious. Worst if you don’t have the height to carry it off and it doesn’t compliment your chubby figure😅
Would love some tips for how to blend comfort (working from home) with not being frumpy - meaning what can look neat and professional but also serve double duty as everyday wear for a basic suburban woman in her 60's lifestyle? These past 3 years have really tanked my desire to "pull it together" and I find myself doing the bare minimum. Also - would love some tips for short women - belting is hard because I'm short-waisted and have a bust... not sure how to create a nice look that's still comfortable.
Nikol! You crack my up!! You are absolutely right!! It's an anything goes society! Funny story, I'm 66 and never fly,so I thought, oh I'm going to wear a great dress and look classy! Well, don't you know I got pulled out and wanted, everywhere! I was even checked for bomb dust on my hands! I was the only woman I saw in a dress, and no MK bag in sight! Finally I asked, why am I being singled out. TSA told me, because your wearing a dress and can hide a lot of stuff! (Let me tell you, I can take a terrorist down with my knitting needles!) Not flying in a dress if I ever do again!😂
If you fly again, knitting needles are not permitted on the plane unless packed in your checked luggage. I'd hate to have you have to throw them away when you go through security.
Nikol, you have a beautiful body for any style but me, like many older women do not even have a waist any longer and to add to that a bigger stomach I find buying anything so difficult. That’s why I tend to buy bigger clothes which, I am sure, makes me a frump. I am 79 and long gone are the days of a slender body that I use to be proud of, so I hide it under way to much fabric and it makes me a bit sad, yet I do it anyway.😢
I am always dressed, never leave the house without some mascara and lipstick and I mean to do this till the day I die!! I don't like casual very much even though I do dress down at times. Thats just me and my chunky real gold jewellery is on 24hrs a day,365 days a year,at the beach, painting, traveling, showering lol!
Nikol, that was spot on! I try very hard never to fall in the frumpy department. Accessories are SO important. Even my 98 year old Mom would still put on jewelry every day. A spot of lipstick, some fabulous earrings or necklace. It makes such a difference. The other thing we can do, if we have a larger stomach, is to wear a belt, but put a blazer jacket on. It hides a lot of things. I would love to see how you dress to travel abroad. What to wear on the airplane, for that long ride, yet still look stylish and comfortable. Great video!
Nikol, great video! My issue is my large plus size. On a limited budget, finding clothes that are stylish is really difficult. Add to that fact I am nearly 60, I just do not enjoy clothes shopping. Fun fact...my husband of 37 years can actually pick out stupendous clothes for me, but is one of those men who wears untucked shirts! Can you do a video sometime about this topic. I believe a lot of larger women would live to see that. By the way, I love how your makeup never looks like you have half a bottle of foundation on, yet you always look stunning. I am making an effort to make my cosmetics work with what I have rather than trying to look like someone else. Finally, I have so much envy for your hair! Much love from Texas!
Lane Bryant offers plus size and stylish with affordable pricing. Also, Macy's has a larger women's section and you can often find things on sale. Ross For Less has some good values. Surprisingly, Amazon is getting on board with better clothing options.
I always thought that for men the rule was square hem shirt gets worn loose (the Tommy Bahamas look), and a rounded hem gets tucked. Mind you, now we have 'lumberjane' shirts for young women, yegads.
Oh my goodness, thank you!! I analyze people and their appearance all the time (airports...wow! how do people even leave their homes dressed the way they do??) and think if they'd just do this or that (many of the suggestions you made), it would take years off of them. Why do people give up? I don't get it! Americans are the worst. It's embarrassing. I love the challenge of being relaxed and comfortable, especially on long haul flights, but elevating the look. It takes no more effort to throw on a scarf or a little jewelry, tuck in a top, put on some makeup....you know what I mean....than to not yet makes all the difference. Again, thank you. As you can probably tell, this is a pet peeve of mine. ;)
Thank you for a great inspirational video. I refuse to dress like a mature woman. At the same time I don’t dress like my granddaughter . My problem is I am petite rather on the skinny side BUT I am very big chested. And that makes the whole situation very challenging. 😊
Great video! I work in customer service, and men, women, teenagers, you name it dress like slobs. I will not give into the slob culture! All young women look the same--leggins, sweatshirt, and a fanny pack strapped across their front and it's a horrible look. Although I do wear a uniform to work, I wear skorts instead of shorts and iron all my clothes and add an accessory--even a bracelet gets noticed. When I'm home it's skorts, nice top, etc. I just turned 60 and won't go frump!
Yes it matters. That is the reason I started watching these types of videos, because I feel old and frumpy and have not been sure what is appropriate to wear at my age.
All this tips are well known. The problem is, if you are slightly, it works. If you have a bigger belly, it looks often awful with a belt, like a squeezed tied sausage.
This is a pet peeve of mine and you stated it very well. I’m abhorred by the way people dress in an airport. Comfortable doesn’t have to mean sloppy or unkept. What does it matter how one dresses? It matters, period. Don’t underestimate the amount of beauty, grace and love one can project by making an effort to dress well. And it doesn’t take a lot of money. We can all be a positive influence on those around us just by making an effort with our clothes, grooming and style.
Well, I live in Massachusetts. Not near Boston. I'd say that 90% of New England residents consider high fashion to be the L.L.Bean Catalog. Bostonians are a wee bit more fashion-concious than that. But not much.
Thank you for this video. I’ve commented once before and got such an overwhelming response from your followers. My heart was so touched. I bought your berry red lipstick and started wearing a little makeup. Now my body doesn’t match my face. I’m so frumpy. 4 years ago at the age of 70 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through a double mastectomy. However during the reconstruction phase my right breast would not heal and was removed completely the left breast wasn’t completed for fear of the same thing happening. (It still has the spacer) I got a prosthetic bra but the young girl helping me added an additional prosthetic to my left side. This makes me look like Dolly Pardon. Wearing it in Texas with the temperatures over 106 degrees is complete voodoo 🥵. So I don’t wear it (long story huh?). Now I have a left breast but not a right. A belt accentuates the deformity. I don’t see how tailoring could help me at this point. During fall and winter I wear a scarf or jacket but now it’s too hot. I could use some guidance. Surely I’m not alone with this problem. Thank you for making me feel better about myself. I love you 😘
Go back to where you got fitted and have them switch out the prostheses- they should’ve matched your right side to the left so that you would only be wearing one. (Medicare replaces the form every two years). If the mfr of that prosthesis makes covers, request one for your form - that helps with perspiration absorption. (I’m an RN that has been doing post mastectomy fittings since 2009.)
Peggy, I'm an RN too, in Texas myself...those people should have helped you more. That was terrible, you didnt leave fully rehabilitated w so much off kilter, improperly arranged prosthesis--NOOO, they've gotta help you more. Surely a lingerie shop or a doctors office's nurses could help you resolve this haphazard remedy!!
This is a skinny women only video. I cannot apply most of these tips to my barrel chested frame. No belt or tuck will ever improve that look, I promise because I’ve tried.
Agreed!! The only thing I would add to this would be that as a traveller I would appreciate others to actually shower before getting on a flight with the other passengers. Some seem to have lost the habit of using soap before travelling!!!
Men who are trim and fit, they can wear the tucked in shirts. Men who are carrying twins to multiple terms with no release, they cant really pull it off.
Thank you for the reminder that it matters. I’m a teacher and a mom and I’m usually running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Often times, I feel like it doesn’t matter if I look frumpy as long as my clothes are clean. But you’re right, spending an extra 5 minutes putting effort into my outfits can make a world of difference!
Love your shirt dress, unfortunately Amazon in 🇨🇦 price is 4 times the amount in US dollars:( 147$ Canadian ! I’m sure I can find something similar for less. Love your tips ! Accessories make such a difference!’ I find that in my city , I always try to get ready for my day by wearing makeup , nice fashion , hair , jewelry etc . I always feel great as it makes a difference . Sometimes I do feel a little overdressed … but I wear it anyway. Live each day as if it were your last!
I love this Nikol. ❤ Once again, thank you for these simple tips for elevating our looks. There was once a man who told my son year's ago how "put together" his mother always looked. I was flattered. Yes!! ❤
Love the de-frump videos, thank you. I’m petite, a size 4P and it’s so easy for clothes to overwhelm me and go right to “frump”. I have a wonderful seamstress who can fix anything, and aside from my daughter, she is my best friend!😂. Your advice is helpful and gently given, thank you!
Completely agree with your assessment of men with untucked shirts. My husband grew up in the Miami area and likes to wear the “Cuban” type of shirts. He’s blonde and Scandinavian-looking with a great physique … and I thought it was just me and I couldn’t put my finger on why it didn’t work for him. But thank you. Yes. Tuck in your shirts guys and belt those pants. You’ll look so much cLassier and hotter. IMHO
I loved this video and agree 100%. I've always put extra effort into looking my best with clothing, hair and makeup. I see a lot of women here commenting about being overweight. I have been overweight my whole life, and am a bargain shopper too. However, by shopping at TJ MAXX, Marshalls, and looking for sales at better stores, I have been able to accumulate a nice variety of well made clothes that look good on me, without spending a fortune. I also used to binge watch “what not to wear” and learned how to dress for my body type. I will not wear leggings outside of the house and only wear sneakers to the gym or outside exercise. I may be old fashioned to some, but I'm always been told how "put together" I always look, regardless of what I weigh. It's not about impressing others, but feeling good about myself. And when I look my best, I feel my best 😍🙌🏻
Great video, love your suggestions. For me it’s gotten really hard, I’ve put on post menopausal weight. I’m 4’11” very short, never had a stomach, now I do. Don’t know how to dress in my late 50’s almost 60.
I travel from Boston Logan International to Tampa International and back frequently. I rarely see an appropriately dressed woman or man in the terminal or on the plane. No one is giving up their black leggings and sneakers anytime soon. You , along with many other influencers, have millions of subscribers watching your great tips, tricks and advice. Rarely do these subscribers put this into practice. Terminals and planes are filthy places, so I get why people dress way down. I do show up in my most causal outfit with minimal makeup. I don't think we're ever going back to the days people dressed to travel🤷♀️I do appreciate all your advice
I always dress well for travel and my trips are 21 hours of being in the air. Always wear a wool jacket and pants as they crease less.I also get cold on a plane.
What people also fail to see is that the way you present yourself is the way others will see you and in the end effects how they will treat you... and it doesn't have to do with money necessarily, but with class... There's no need to sacrifice comfort when you travel if you find good quality basic pieces. The confidence of being nicely turned out will make people around you notice and treat you accordingly. That's a great plus in my opinion!
I've been traveling around the world for 20 years. There is nothing wrong with Leggings and Sneakers. T-shirts and Denim Jacket if you like. We run through Airports very often and I need the best possible shoe. I just purchased Skecher's Slip ins. I want loose pants for Long flights as an alternative. But I'm always put together not mis matched. LOL I like to arrive at the Ship presentable. 🎉
I agree with much of what you suggest. A tucked in shirt with a belt looks great on a very fit man. On less fit men, not so much. I prefer the untucked look of a crisp shirt either layered or buttoned with a rolled up sleeve. It shows off men with strong forearms! A French tuck can work on women, but it does her profile no favors if she has a stubborn menopausal belly. Many of us do. We can be fit everywhere else, but the pooch. I like how I look straight on, but the profile makes me feel sloppy. A tailored high-low top is more forgiving, still defines the waistline straight on, but since it is not tucked, the cut hides the profile tummy. I am not a fan of the half tuck. It looks like you can’t make up your mind. Lol.
I agree with you regarding to untucked shirt on men. There’s a company called Untuckit. They make shirts (men and women ,I think) that are meant to be worn untucked. They a a bit shorter than regular shirts and they look great. They can even be worn to work for casual days. You are the best, Nikol. Thank you for all of your hard work to bring these videos to us. Just received your Apertif shade lipstick and it is beautiful and feels great on the lips. Can you recommend what lipglosses and lip pencils will enhance it?
Unless they have a big gut and then they have the belt with their stomach hanging over their pants. I think men with a gut look better with the shirt pressed and untucked
@@Vickie, it really doesn’t matter, but I think it’s worth making an effort for-as long as we don’t take it too seriously. Honestly, the older I get, the less I care, and there is SO much freedom in that. I do make an effort to look classy, but I don’t take it as seriously-meaning, I don’t stress over it much. 🎉
@@vickienipp I’m glad this video inspired you, and you are just lovely, BTW! You’re the type that can beautifully wear feminine, classic pieces, so you might as well! 😊
In my town, they for the most part don't tuck in their shirt. Also, I am a size 14 so I have a tummy problem. I think you should have the tops or dresses close but not tight to your body, the A-line look is flattering. What do you think?
Living in Florida for years has been a shock to me in the way people do not care how they look. I grew up in the 60s in Alabama and we dressed nicely. I tried to get my daughters to dress nicely and do their hair and makeup. Women should own it and never look thrown away when going out. I love to dress nicely. I love this video and agree with everything you said. I would love to have your hair.
I lost half my hair to COVID. My boyfriend brought it to me. He got it about 12 hours after coming home. 12 hours later I had it. Am trying multiple things to help my hair get thicker and longer. It was almost to my waist before. I cut it WAY back. Maybe should have left more length 😢. It’s now down past my collarbone. Started above my shoulders about 10 months ago. I’m 76 and really liked my long hair. I miss it. I could wear it so many different ways. I’ve used the belt and unbutton things repeatedly. I loved the way Nikol used other accessories to complete the look ❤. I will be using the layering trick from now on ❤️❤️❤️.
I too lived in Florida East Coast, West Coast, Keys. I realized after a while, not dressing nicely was about not wanting to get hit on by every freak and weirdo Florida has to offer. It was about the heat. It was about seldom giving a crap about impressing others. You really do need to leave your brain in a box back home if you're a Yankee. Unless you're in Palm 🌴 Beach 95% of the population can't relate to quality fashion. It just says " I have money and good taste, rob me." The other 5% remain questionable....never met a Republican in my life I cared to impress. I couldn't careless about your shoes, it's your book collection that interests me.
Oh my gosh! I've seen guys sitting in a bulkhead seat with their feet (some with shoes on, some barefooted) up on the wall in front of them! Disgusting! And to top it off, they'll be talking loudly on their cellphones before the plane leaves the gate. What the heck is that about? Like the rest of us want to hear their phone calls. Rude!
This is so great- I have gorgeous clothes- tailored and stylish and I love vintage- I worked remote and them retired- I am totally in a slump!!! The stuff is all here but the “comfortable, frumpy look takes over- I will listen to this everyday and I will get angry and fix it!!!!! Thanks Nikol!
hello Nikol,,My mom was from the generation where women were glamorous..my mom was a fashionista before her time. My grandmother always worn makeup and dressed stylish into her late eighties..
Good post, Nikol! I know all these tips. My mom always had a flair & taught me how to pull things together. But now, in my 70’s, I’ve lost it. I don’t enjoy online shopping. I hate my upper arms(need a shoulder replaced, so exercise is kind of impossible) And..Don’t get me started on my hair loss. I’ve gone from stylish & trying to look my best to feeling frumpy, I don’t even recognize myself. Though I do have a few “fall back” pieces I feel like myself in
My weight fluctuates, my life long struggle. When my weight was higher, I wore longer shorts and knit tops that were fuller and covered a lot. In my pictures I looked like sponge Bob square pants! I was mortified. Such little things can help so much! My son and dil just arrived on a flight, she had on a tank top, short athletic shorts and flip flops, she's not that young anymore, ugh. Yes, the men in Cincinnati wear shirts out over t shirts. You should see how they dress at a catholic church, they put more effort into football game attire. People are at an all time fashion low.
You are absolutely spot on in my opinion with all your tips, and I’m with you also with men not tucking in their shirt . Love watching your videos, thank you.
Love this video!so helpful! Could you please do a video on stylish flats or low platforms that aren’t just sandals that are very comfortable to wear all day? I’d like to pair them with casual and sometimes formal wear items. I can’t seem to find anything out there. 😊👗👛👓
Well...I hope you're happy! I grabbed my wide black patent leathet belt before leaving for work today , ...and well lets just say that a certain someone noticed me. 😊
I went to a junior college for women in the late 60's and we were required to "dress up" to travel! No one complained about it, because it made us feel very stylish and good about ourselves. I still dress well when I fly. Today I feel just like you do! Everyone dresses like bums, and not only that, they often look dirty! Personally, I don't care to travel anywhere anymore and I don't.
Love it! Two questions- where do you shop? Vintage shops? Outlets? Love, love, love all the Caroline Herrera! Also, shifting gears…how often and how do you clean your makeup brushes? Using your products and lessons, my eyes now just pop. Lots of compliments. Now if I could just get rids of the very dark circles… (genetics!)
I bought the Multi peptide eye serum by the Ordinary for my dark circles. I read that you won't see results for 4 weeks. I hope it works cause I don't know what else to try. It's about 25 dollars, expensive for the ordinary, but cheap compared to others. Hopefully it helps us both.
Nikol liked your video however I am a 65 year old Womens. My weight is all in my tummy. Belting, tuckining in shirts just emphasizes that The simply don’t work and are not flattering. Could you do a video for women who struggle with the same problem. Thankyou
Hi Nikol. I remember flying non-revenue and being the only person dressed and pressed. You could always spot the airline personnel on any flight for that reason. I so love your “shorts” with vintage finds. Would you be able to do a tutorial in just where and how to shop for these wonderful pieces of clothing? For instance, do you look for something specific, certain designers, on line, vintage shops, etc. also, what kind of pricing do you look for? As a novice in this search, all hints would be very helpful.
This was a great video and you made excellent points. I almost always buy used clothes. Trying to FIND a tailor is hard. I live in a medium size city and they are hard to find. Very!
Young women in my age group dress frumpy too, but I prefer classier looks. I care about how I look and I’m not ashamed of that. I feel there is this unspoken rule that you’re not supposed to look like you’re trying or else you’re “superficial.”
Oh Nikol I Do feel frumpy. I've retired from corporate employment in Melbourne City and I've moved to a country town by the sea. I love the place as it reminds me of where I grew up on Queensland's Gold Coast in the 1960's. But many people here including me have become frumpy. Thankyou so very much for the wake up! I love shirt dresses for style and versatility And I love what you've done with yours. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!
I find it's the 'Coastal Grandma' look that drives me nuts, no matter how practical for in the garden or on the beach. For very young women a crisp shirt loose over a nice tank is cute, but as we age, not so much.
I looked great in those shirt dresses in my thirties but no more. I've always noticed that Angelina Jolie wears mostly solid colors and I think that style is classic. I like navy, black, white, or gray. Those colors look good on most people. However, thin people pull off white better.
You videos are really helpful but on the subject of “frumpy”… I honestly don’t want to be mean, but having hair as rigid as yours, that never moves because of all the product and is so stiff - that is aging and frumpy. You look fantastic but your hair is incredibly old fashioned. I’m European though, so maybe we just have a different aesthetic.
I appreciate all of your tips here, and I love to look stylish and feminine all of the time! I am petite, and I am always in search of new petite clothing lines! I know I can have things altered, and I have many times, but alterations can significantly add to the cost of a new outfit. If you are familiar with great petite clothing lines, I'd love to have you share them! I'd love to discover some new lines! Thank you!
The Pacific Northwest area is notorious for dressing frumpy. I'm told that I'm overdressed, but I grew up in Connecticut, and that is how we dressed. I've tried to dress way down, but I just don't feel like me. To each their own. I respect that, but it's not for me. Thank you for posting this video subject. ❤
Yes, being 'understated' is a thing here....I find myself doing the 'coastal grandma' look for running errands, doctor, dentist etc. A nice good coverage tank, straight jeans, Sperry boat shoes, and a crisp shirt over the works, but often a belt on the jeans. It's pretty much a uniform in this part of the world, as much as I would rather wear a dress, and it has to be straight shift dresses only as ...coastal breezes :)
Ma'am, I think you are a gorgeous lady and I have found inspiration from a lot of your videos, (Especially hair and make-up) but you have to realize that the majority of women do not have perfect bodies. I have struggled with being over-weight my whole life. I was a chubby kindergartener, and I am almost 56 now. I try my best to eat the healthiest foods possible. I take no prescription meds. I am healthy, just over-weight. DNA is powerful. It has always been a struggle for me and even at my smallest which was 135 lbs in high school, I did not have the perfect hourglass figure. I think if you could live just one day in my body or someone else that struggles with weight, or a disproportioned body, you would change some of the advice you are giving in this video. Belted waist is definitely NOT the way to go for me and a lot of other women. I realize that this is not the majority opinion on this video. I just felt strongly to state it. The struggle is real.
Men and women with big bellies do not look good with their shirts tucked in. And the older one gets, the thicker one generally grows in the mid-section. Loose or tunic tops are much more attractive and far more comfortable on round bodies. If those persons are neat, clean, comfortable and well groomed, then more power to them! I don't personally know many folks over 50 who generally wear tucked-in tops unless there's a uniform or a suit coat involved. Comfort becomes a top priority, along with camouflaging one's worst flaws whenever possible.
It makes a difference always!! Clothes, makeup and accessories just make a woman feel so much better. It’s worth the effort! I’m close to 68 and have always been a classic dresser. And ya know…Amazon has really come up with some beautiful, reasonably priced items…add a few accessories and… voila’!
Great video! I force my husband to tuck in his shirt. The fat middle aged men are trying to hide their big guts when they leave their shirts untucked. They still end up looking 7 months pregnant!
Always tho't a man w/ an untucked shirt looked like a maternity top ; but then a tucked in shirt isn't good either & sometimes the belly & shirt even hide the belt ! Good grief !! 🤥
I love all of this, Nicole. My struggle is with shoes that look halfway decent for problem feet. Can’t wear any heels and even ballet flats are often far too pointy with no cushioning under the heel and ball if the foot.
Im sure my feet qualifies as 'problem ' deformity from RA & a 40 degree shift from center. 7 surgeries & metatarsal heads resectioned & toes fused on & paralyzed. I found Sketchers pointy toe flats that I can wear comfortably and look Normal! Ive waited nearly 40 years to wear cute shoes ❤
You are tall thin & have great figure. You look good in anything. Im 5'1" with a tummy. Im not reslly overweight but its hard for me to get any good look tucked in shirts or belted looks. Im considering getting liposuction just to have clothing fit me better. Feeling frumpy in most of my clothes.
I think many people don’t tuck their shirt or blouse in because they are carrying a little weight round the stomach. We has a wonderfully entertaining cook called Jennifer (half of the programmes called “two fat ladies”). She was pretty large and owned it, she said “I have delicate ankles and wrists and the rest I hide under a tent”. Not this message but great just the same.
