Although the Earthbound title, be it under the name "Earthbound", "Earthbound Zero", or "Earthbound Beginnings", was never given an original western release to western markets, it did get an official release in Japan under the title Mother. I have a legitimate copy of that game on my shelf. Final Fantasy II is a similar story, though I don't own that cartridge yet. I've heard that at least one of the programmers were deported back to America, which resulted in the whole team relocating and finishing the game in the United States, still only releasing the game in Japan. Mother did eventually get an official Western release, but it was only as a digital download on the Wii U Virtual Console and later on the Switch Online NES app. This is despite the fact the game was actually remade for the GBA, which also never saw a western release much like Mother 3 on the same system, itself never seeing an official Western release in any form. Final Fantasy II, on the other hand, has seen many re-releases. The original prototype translation never was completed, and thus no official Western release to the NES was made. However, the game was remade for the Playstation with FF1 as Final Fantasy Origins in western markets, which also sits on my shelf. This Duology version was again remade for the GameBoy Advance under the title Final Fantasy I & II - Dawn of Souls. It had a further remake with even more additional content made as a solo release on the PlayStation Portable. Its final physical release appears to be part of the Pixel Remaster Collection for Switch and PlayStation 4, though with only graphical changes and all additional content from previous remakes removed. This doesn't even take into consideration the many digital releases, or the confusing US release of Final Fantasy II for the SNES, which was really a rebranding of Final Fantasy IV. The point of all this being, these games may have had prototypes not released on cartridge in the west, but they both were Famicom releases that did eventually find some form of legitimate release to western markets. Both of these titles are RPGs, so their audience is limited in this regard. Recommending either title is also a challenge to RPG fans, as both titles deviate from standard conventions of other titles for the time in their own way, making them even more niche in an already niche market. I enjoy these games, but they are definitely not for everyone.

I think Hard Drivin' and Xybots were too ambitous for the NES, I can see why they canned them.

Make it 48. Both Arcadia VI & Cheetahmen II suck. 🤮

Some of these looked really good. I really wish someone would complete the Chip's Challenge prototype.

I really like your videos. BUT: Only some games have a title screen shown here. Is there a chance that you could add an overlay with the name of the game OR have a list of the games in the video description or even better as a pinned first comment? That would be great! Most of the games look absolutely fine. Some have missing sound or bland (unfinished?) graphics. But most seem to be ready for release. I wonder why they didn't come out? The Atari Jaguar prototypes looked much more unfinished!

I didn't notice this until after I uploaded and and I was on holiday so couldn't fix it. I am back now so I will add some time stamps.

22:29 That was Sunman. A modified prototype for a Superman game, but never made due to legal issues with DC Comics. P.S.: Anyone know what game that was going to be at 6:59 ?

What is the game before BioForce Ape? It looks like a Famicom game that never released here.

You mean Arcadia VI? A multicart of mini-games, never released anywhere as far as I know.

Yes, that's the one! I love that game. It would have done really well here during the time of Zelda 2, Faxanadu, and Battle of Olympus.
