Please dont just put Wood directly in contact with the ground. It will just start to rot really quickly. Put a Metal cover around it, it will also stabilize the pole when the metal sticks into the ground a bit more.
@jth086

Looks great. As for the posts. I'm not a professional, but my personal rule is to have the width of a post be the outside circle around the post. So, for your 6" post, your total outside hole diameter would be 18". I also use the rule of 1' of depth for every 4' of height above ground. It may seem like overkill for some applications, but I'd rather it be way too sturdy than flimsy at all, primarily because you never know what you might want to do in the future and having it overbuilt is better than having to completely redo it later.

To make the posts less wobbly, put a few screws with about 50% of the screw sticking out in random places on the posts in areas that will be covered by the cement. Then pour the cement in. It will give the cement more to grab on to once it sets.
@JacobAnawalt
@JacobAnawalt 2 года назад
Idk, I’m tempted to file this in “sounds good in theory, but not in practice” I’ve never done it seen this done and center set posts were fine. It makes me wonder how long before the screw corroded. The bigger issue was post placement in the hole and maybe the “mix in hole” method. I’ve also never seen it done that way.
@iluomopeloso
@iluomopeloso 2 года назад
@@JacobAnawalt Definitely the placement. I used to work for a deck/fence installation crew, and we always poured dry quickcrete into the post holes. It would probably have helped if he'd put some sort of footing in the hole first, too. Just a busted up brick in the hole before dropping the post in there.

@TheFixFinder

The air vent helps the fire breath really well to help keep it smokeless. The holes on the drain cover are big enough to not get clogged with the ash. Shop vac can clean up the ash really easy too.
@Momoka7
@Momoka7 2 года назад
5:26 lol. So you pour the cement bags dry into the hole, then hose it down with water. Ugh. Every cement has a water ratio for ideal hardness, but what you do there is flush allot away. As a Mason you get a thumbs down from me. Could have mixed it in a wheelbarrow, and then dumped it in, woulda worked way better. Also you used weather resistant wood, nice. But why digging in just like that? They will corrode inside the ground, and it doesn't take that long until it happens. But well you do you.
@TheFixFinder
@TheFixFinder 2 года назад
I’m not claiming to be an expert, just showed what I did to show ideas. That was post mix, which was a no mix required bag. Yea I used ground contact wood which was made to do things like this. I think having the pavers interlock with the concrete around the top of the pavers will also help keep water from seeping down beside the post. Everyone has their own way I guess.
@Momoka7
@Momoka7 2 года назад
@@TheFixFinder No mix required, interesting. Never worked with that, but then again I never dig in posts like that, since it's not done over here. Another thing is they not hold up anything, so if they fail you probably can pull em out and just put in new ones. My mainly concern was not water seeping down, but moisture within the earth. Which might be non-important since they not hold any structure up and can be exchanges if the need arises. Overall it is an ok build, I didn't want to be overly critical about it, as you stated it is a Haxman job.

Great job thanks for showing the mistakes…that’s the most helpful part. For a smokeless fire the fire itself has to be below the holes. The holes add extra oxygen to the top of the flame for a secondary burn that eliminates the smoke. If you overfill any solo stove it will smoke just like any other fire.

nice job. 2 things I would have done a bit differently. 1) since your internet connection runs right through the middle, why not move the entire "patio" over 10' so it doesn't? Murphy's Law dictates that if there is a problem with that cable, it will be directly beneath the "patio" 2) using that vent pipe for air intake is good idea. but why not move it out beyond the edge of the "patio" where it is more open to the surrounding air? Just my 2 cents. You did do a great job.
@TheFixFinder
@TheFixFinder 2 года назад
For number 1. I positioned it in that spot because of future plans for a porch area over our back patio that will be complimented by the fire pit and off that patio a walkway that connects the patio to fire pit and our back sliding door, walkway, and firepit will all be in line with each other. 2. You could do that if you wanted. My thought is this way you don’t have to worry about grass growing up around it or being messed up with weed eater or mower whereas with it coming up around the pavers it stays neat and clean. with your internet cable so close to the fire pit, literally under it, you are going to have problems in the future. if it really is fiber optic cables, that is a glass subsitute and it will melt over time and have problems even at temperatures as low as 300-400 degrees F, and wood can hit over 2,000 degrees F. you are going to melt that cable and ruin it over time. and you will have to pay out of pocket to fix it.

Thanks. It’s true, but if I moved the whole thing one way, it would kind of be over the septic and leech field, if I moved it the other way, it would be in the way of anything I wanted to move into the back yard through the gate. So this is the spot that we ended up with. That’s the main reason I’m not worried is because they lay those new lines in like 10 min. I have seen several other lines laying around here so you know they have done it a few times.

One thing to note is that concrete will explode when it heats too much, that's why it's not used in fire pits, ovens, etc. You would typically use firebricks for that or a special mortar mix. It will have to reach a very high temp in order to explode, but it's definitely possible from burning wood, especially for a prolonged period.

Really nice will probably last a solid 10 years before you have to check for weaknesses 1. Dry pour concrete is really not the great. So much to show how weak and brittle it is compared to pre-mixing but it's surrounded by dirt and deep so you may never notice anything for some years. 2. Wood will rot and be destroyed due to the concrete and ground contact. It would last a crazy amount longer if those were braces above the concrete. And placed steel plates in the concrete to support the beams above once it's all dried. Overall still incredible job and for DIY this will do everything and then some for what it's purpose is.

Brother man. Fires should be built to burn like a candle from the top down. Smoke is unburned wood. If you hold a lighter underneath a stick it's going to light it on fire If you hold a lighter underneath a log it's just going to smoke. You should never have a flame below large wood only above it. Your big logs first then smaller and smaller as you go up You light your tinder at the top, it's going to get hot, and any smoke generated, from the wood below it, will pass through the flame and burn. And the fire will only get stronger and stronger, as it gets to larger and larger wood. As long as you used enough wood, you will not need to add wood to this fire the whole evening The exact opposite of how we were all taught to make a fire. And it's completely smokeless without a fire ring. You can do it out in the woods, and no smoke will go above the brush line

How do you clean the ash from the fire out of the pit with the rock in there as a base?

If you left a block out for ventilation why did you then cover the hole where the block was on the inside of the fire pit?

In the range of $3-500. I only paid for lumber, sand, and rock plus a few extras. Pavers we’re free

@TheFixFinder

About 6 feet from the brick around the fire ring to the outside, so about 15 -16 ft total across. I would recommend minimum 16ft.

I made a follow up video about it. It ended up cracking apart in a couple sections from the heat. I then tried it again with wire in it and I did something wrong and it broke instantly when I tried to lift it. So I gave up on having the concrete ring.

I made a little research on smokeless fire pits becuase I was curious, I think I found why yours didnt work. You need to make holes to the bottom of the center ring, it takes the unburned particles and pushes them to the fire again for second burn from top holes. That makes if smokeless. I see you only have the top holes
@TheFixFinder
@TheFixFinder Год назад
Yeah maybe I should. I have already made some changes and a new video about the changes and I’m going to make another video testing it out and I’ll see how well it performs. If I need to I’ll drill more holes at the bottom

This is good for a beginner. But you really should have cut nearly every block to make that circle. Those spaces between the pavers are ridiculous. And you only need cement around the perimeter. The spaces between the pavers can be filled with regular white sand…
