Pat McHale called on much of American History when writing OTGW. Most notably, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the early New England Colonies. He would use these ideas to make a masterpiece of his own.

@@jessicaclakley3691 It’s crazy how many references McHale fit into this short show! I love the retelling of Dante’s Inferno, but this video was mainly on the American influences. I’ll probably talk about foreign fairytales and stories in another video. Glad you enjoyed!

Remembered watching this as a kid in the fourth grade right on Halloween on Cartoon Network(at the time CN released all the episodes at once). And man, I gotta say, it really felt relatable, due to having half-blooded siblings as well as the theme of brotherhood, since I have a lot of brothers. I was really sad when the series ended so quickly and we see how the remaining characters spend their lives, because i knew there were no more episodes after that and the adventures stopped.

Great analysis. I didn't realize how many pieces of art and history McHale was influenced by. I remember reading about OTGW, I don't remember if it was a comment on RU-vid or a review of the show, but someone described the show as: "If Mark Twain wrote Alice in Wonderland."

Consider the utterly New England short story “The Devil and Daniel Webster” by Stephen Vincent Benét, and especially the 1941 film adaptation. You’ll find massive influence on OtGW’s art direction, especially Enoch’s creepy social, Lorna, and two backlit stills of the boys.

Beatrice was meant to be a ref to the Cheshire cat?? I thought she was part of the Dante's inferno tie in. OTGW directly mirror's the plot of Dante's inferno.

absolutely fantastic video! otgw is probably my favorite show and you definitely do it a ton of justice in this! i never thought about the "the fight is over" part of the story despite watching otgw countless times, honestly that really attests to how nearly every time you rewatch the show, you notice something new. btw, not to be hashtag that person but actually wirt's coat is a WWII nurse's cape! you may be getting it mixed up with the hat that was briefly seen in ep 9 when wirt takes it out, which was a union soldier cap. :)

Probably the best OTGW video I have ever watched, I’m even sad that it was short!! Thank you so much for making this. I personally chronically relate to Wirt and I tend to worry and overthink everything. Recently I’d given up, I struggle connecting with others in fear of what they’d think and avoid work on my art portfolio due to me being terrified not being good enough for the college I so desperately want to go to, but I’m to scared. I understand the story and lesson of the show, but you translated into something at the end that made me mentally take a step back. I need to walk into the unknown in order to grow and change. Thank you so much for what you had to say, you honestly helped me. You have earned a subscriber!
