It's amazing how the thrill of marching off to war was transported through this song across an entire century. More amazing is the thought that this feeling is transported from millions of dead, who at first gracefully marched to what they didn't know would be a hellish end for them. The beautiful contrast of their bliss and the hell that awaited them. Makes me think about all kinds of people today proudly hauling everything and everyone according to their ideals, in reality tugging the fabric of stable civilization to shreds.

@@georgewashington3918 no they wouldn’t . The French mutinied because they didn’t wanted to go into the offensive anymore and attack German lines . The French still were always ready to defend their country they just don’t wanted to go offensive any more but didn’t saw a problem being defensive . Besides general petain was brutal to everyone who mutinied and quickly suppressed the mutiny by executing imprisoning and punishing the mutinies in every way possible , he was so harsh that the mutiny quickly was dissolved and thus petain ended the mutiny .

@@arizonaranger6024 they didn’t die for nothing they defended their home and also Australians charged the Ottomans but failed causing many to perish. In world war 2 General Eisenhower read about this and learned from the Australian failure. Then he used this to direct the Utah and Omaha landings causing ww2 to turn to the allies favor
@@goluckybro902 no they defended or attacked Serbia, their countries weren’t defending themselves they were defending their foreign interests the people who actually fought for those countries were for the most part noble, those who sent them to fight that war were nothing of the sort the war achieved very little of what it promised the soldiers, it was portrayed as a right of passage, the war to end all wars, something that would be remembered for eons to come when half the people my age have forgotten it, it’s sometimes glossed over in history classes and portrayed as cut and dry, only a set up to the second, they were broken because in their eyes they had fought for nothing in horrible static warfare for a non permanent peace, everything they had been promised as young innocent boys was thrown out, so imo in the grand scheme they died for the betterment of mankind but not for themselves other than those who were directly invaded/occupied like the French, Belgians, Russians, and Arab rebels the last two not gaining much from the war either
