Normandy landings, France.
High angled shot of a packed landing craft, all British troops. Various shots of troops coming ashore in France, with supplies to establish a beachhead. This must be after D-day as the troops do not come under fire and walk up beach easily. Normandy villagers help troops with their equipment.
Various C/Us of soldiers greeting French civilians. Various shots of American troops shake hands with French villagers on their advance inland. Tanks and Bren gun carriers of the British and U.S. troops move onward through villages, past the sign post Sainte-Mere-Eglise and then through the town itself. The troops and vehicles pass signs to Surrain and Carentan. Various shots of a crowd gathers in town square of Bayeux to hear a French war correspondent give news of the war. The crowd make 'v' for victory signs.
Various shots of British army and air force personnel constructing an airstrip using bulldozer, angle-dozers, etc. We see planes taking off and taxiing. Various shots of gliders of the 6th Airborne Division which have crash landed in France. Various shots of U.S. 105mm artillery in action. Aerial shots from aircraft shooting at German targets; ammunition dumps , trains and convoys on the roads are hit, massive explosions.
Various shots of German prisoners, the injured are carried on stretchers. Amongst them are some Mongolian soldiers captured on Russian front and now fighting for Germans. They are herded together and put onto landing craft.
Various shot from captured German film made earlier in war. The film showing the emplacements along Hitler's Atlantic wall. Various shots of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel on tour of installations. Panning L/S of the steel structures that form part of the wall. Various shots of long-range gun being rolled out of hangar. Various shots of Rommel looking at more guns.
Various shots of wrecked German gun emplacements, the Royal Engineers are busy dismantling what is left of it. L/S of HMS Kelvin crossing Channel. Various shots of Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Jan Smuts (South African Prime Minister) and Sir Alanbrooke (aka Field Marshal Lord Alan Brooke) getting off warship and onto a DUKW (amphibious vehicle) heading for the beach. Various shots of Churchill being greeted on the beach by Montgomery (aka Monty,). They then drive off in jeep. Various shots of Alanbrooke, Churchill and Montgomery posing by army tent, Smuts films them with his cine camera. Various shots of the party meeting the soldiers. They walk amongst them.
