I think it’s cool that perhaps that’s Zuko’s intention, not just pure superpower luck. He can’t do firebending in the middle of an earthbender town, so his next best bet is some good swords.

One thing that I find interesting is that the swords Zuko grabbed aren’t his swords, but the officer’s swords. So this means that some people in the Earth Kingdom Military/Law Enforcement are proficient in dual wielding

I think the Dai Li is a bit inspired by the German Stasi. Back then, nearly every citizen was a snitch, and the fear of lying was so big, that when a whole group of people were agreeing, the Stasi(Dai Li) could be certain that's it's true. And by only arresting the person the people accused, they keep their image of being protectors. Not opressors. If they wouldn't value the words of the citizens, the citizens would become less likely to tell them everything.

@@Robin93k it's super weird, because wouldn't they arrest Zuko later (where there are no crowds) just in case he really was a fire bender or at least keep a close eye on him out of suspicion.

Would also explain why the earth kingdom would have the weakest navy in the war of any. How exhausting it is to constantly bend in combat.

@@Camaroni1000 Technically they can also just use sails, as waterbenders actually do mostly on long voyages I'd guess. Nothing really says that this rockbending way is more energy intensive than waterbending movement. Their main detriment in regards to a navy is the lack of rocks on the sea. They always need to take their 'ammunition' with them. And while this ammunition might be very strong against wooden ships (one large boulder just on/under the waterline could possibly sink a ship), it isn't worth much against a steel ship. Also waterbenders would just freeze the hole shut and firebenders would be even stronger against wooden ships. Essentially an earthbending navy can be strong against wooden ships manned by non-benders, but not against steel ships or other benders (unless they also get steel ships).

@@MDP1702 I feel like each bending is more powerful when directly used, so earth bending would be pretty inefficient as propulsion when used indirectly as compared to water bending.

he was only sent near there by suki. the only other ally he could ever find unless he decided to spent weeks going back to either south or north pole and HOPE someone there would recognize him and even understand that he needs help. and that would still be a gamble on whether or not he would try this with his even though indeed more inteligent, still animal mind.

And in other battles, Zuko uses breakdancing techniques as part of his unique style of fire bending. Not unlike Mugen’s dance-inspired martial arts.

I never realized until now

I know what you mean, and I do agree, it's just that there is something I think people should realize. He was really turning around. It's just that he thought his old life, or rather old life prospect, wasn't a possibility anymore. Then he gets a chance for that again, and chooses the "old" future prospect. He then realizes, after all his growing and turning his life around: "holy shit, what my mother said about not forgetting who I really am has nothing to do with being the prince of the Fire Nation, but with the values I hold. In essence, the growing up/turning around process made him realize "his" dream, was not right for him, he wouldn't have known that without all he goes through in book 2. That's why he now realizes speaking out against his father back then was right, and him not speaking up now is wrong, and he acts because of that. He did his turning, he just didn't fully realize the implications himself. Hey and besides, the last scene in the show is them all chilling in the teashop together, so the thought was never wrong, just took a bit longer.

Can water benders bend ethanol because its chemical composition has water molecules or can they just bend most liquids? Or maybe they can only bend the water used to dilute the ethanol for the sake of edibility. Edibility; the capability of being edible.

If you change something so drastic as the transportation, most of the time you wanna change as much as possible. So it makes sense that in a short time big changes happened, look at how the trains developed through out our history, and how they are spread depending on the economic premises of a country. But jeah, the old trams are more charming, like, a million times more.

@@MannIchFindKeinName if you were comparing the transportation of Aang vs Korra, I would definitely agree. However, if you were talking about the Fire Nation’s tech vs the Earth Kingdom’s in ATLA, you’ve got to understand that not only is their world still at the dawn of industrial development, they are also at war. The Fire Nation would want to preserve their own technology as much as possible (so they wouldn’t risk having other Nations appropriate them), so it makes sense Ba Sing Se is still a bit behind. Throughout history, we’ve seen multiple nations rising thanks to technologies only they possessed (the invention of gunpowder, for example). It’s very realistic that Avatar reflects this.

I cannot imagine Mako would have just chosen such an obvious "I'm speaking loudly for people outside to hear me" line reading without a director telling him to. It's possible that was originally going to be more of a clear part of the episode but got reworked and maybe he was already dead by then so they couldn't re-record it?

I’m inclined to agree! Iroh is capable of slipping into Lake Laogai undetected. He’s sharp as nails. I don’t think he explicitly knows that Jet is watching, but he’s definitely committed to maintaining the illusion at this point. I think it’s possible his delivery even hints that he doesn’t know Jet is watching in that moment-the point may be that he’s saying it weirdly so Zuko knows not to say just to firebend it!

No actually if you look closely they’re right there under his hand so I think he definitely knew. Because Zuko warned him right before they got into the city so they definitely had to know they were being watched. So I think why Iroh said it like that was because they knew Jet was there watching them. Imo

This episode was also on the air around the same time Paranoia Agent hit Adult Swim, so the creepy tonally discordant intro for that got mixed in my kid head with this episodes' weird vibes and made both of them far more disturbing than either would've been alone. Now I think about it, this series also just happened to hit at the same time as the general pop-media anime boom, which is probably one of several reasons why so many anime fans consider ATLA in the same bucket. While most shows weren't independently multicultural, there was also a VAST increase in cross-cultural availability to compensate following the splash Pokemon, YuGiOh, and Inu Yasha made. I think this show was a natural and well-produced evolution of those shows and Teen Titans.

I remember having nightmares of this episode and the Dai Li. The Dai Li theme was playing, the dark green lighting was there, really spooky.

yeah, i also thought that maybe later airing of the show, specially recently with netflix they would be able to upscale the resolution/use blu ray and other high quality midia distribution versions, as well as just airing them on modern high resolution screens would clear out his silhuete.

You know, this analysis makes me wonder. We see a lot of fusions of land-dwelling and flying animals, but do we ever see the same for aquatic animals? Say, an eel-squid? A sharktopus? A crab-ray? All I can think of for aquatic creatures we see in the show are the koi fish and that giant serpent, and neither one is actually an animal fusion. Is the ocean weird enough to merit being untouched?

Reminds me of an interview I heard where someone wrote a book called or about “Why Fish Aren’t Real” or something like that. A salmon and lung fish might seem related, but a lung fish is more related to a cow than a salmon.

Sounds like how my German teacher would describe her childhood in East Germany, or, at least, how she described her parents feeling (she was about ten when the Berlin Wall fell, so she didn't truly have an understanding at the time).

I had exactly the same thoughts when I started re-watching the series recently. I remember back when I watched this episode in something like the early to mid 2010s, the king was basically a silhouette. I went into my re-watch fully expecting just a silhouette, but no.

I think his investigation wasn't that weird, maybe he wanted to gather evidence as to when do they use fire bending so he could tell those details to the police so they would also spy on them and catch them in the act, and I believe it could be plausible that the police would at least put someone on the case, because having people from the nation that started the war could be dangerous for keeping the whole "What war?" intact, for all they know, Zuko and Iroh could be spies or assets from the fire nation plotting something, so it's better not to risk it. But I agree on your point about him not thinking his plan very well, he just doomed himself looking like a schizophrenic guy that attacks people at random, making him a prime target for the Dai Li as he is a menace to public order.
