Another point about Toph getting over the burned feet thing. When it happened, she was suddenly blinded and in severe pain, so she panicked. But once she was healed and able to think on it, she probably came to the conclusion that it was, at least partially, her fault. As far as Aang stepping back from his issues, I think it's a pretty human reaction. Cause as much as I would like to think people progress upward in a straight line, it's more a squiggly rollercoaster that's constantly going up and down. So Aang stepping back makes alot of sense to me. Especially after such a tense battle with all that walking afterwards. Probably a mental escape tbh.

@guywithrevolver
@guywithrevolver 6 месяцев назад
Agreed. Aang's still a fun loving kid at heart and that's shown with how he copes with the loss in this episode, going to one of his peoples old air temples and all. In psychology there's this model used to determine how people cope with stressors from a subjective point of view (The transactional model of stress and coping). Not gonna explain the whole thing but the last stage of the model involves coping strategies and whether or not they're adequate in coping with stress. Two types of coping strategies are Direct strategies, facing the stressor head on, and Avoidance strategies, distracting yourself from the stressor. Due to Aang's nature, he employs an avoidance coping strategy here after sustaining one of the hardest losses in his lifetime, his possible last chance at taking on the fire lord safely before the comet arrives. It's not healthy as I think the show establishes, but it's not too out of character considering how humans react to things

It's one thing to need to earn trust from someone you don't know or even someone who screwed up but Zuko *betrayed* her right when she was letting her guard down and that resulted in Aang being nearly killed so of course she's going to be the single most cautious member of the group around him. I always thought the boomerang hitting Combustion Man and continuing to fly was complete BS, then just like two weeks ago I found out I was wrong. I was playing with my own boomerang in a park and it hit a hydro pole and just bounced off and kept going. It lost a lot of momentum but it didn't stop flying; every other time it's hit anything it's just stopped spinning and fallen straight down. And this wasn't like the edge of the 'rang nicked the pole, it hit the thing straight on. Boomerangs are weird, but I love them.

Basically came here to leave this comment, glad someone else noticed. It's great character writing when Zuko spends a week in the Earth Kingdom being a good boy but then throws it out the window when Azula gives him a chance at what he thinks will make him truly happy, but somehow "a step back" when Aang toughens up in front of a crowd of people he let down and then presumably a day or two later decides to try to push his problems to the back when he's around his friends? Comes off as a double standard to try to hammer home how good Zuko's development is. I'm a grown ass man who will do the exact same thing - acknowledge my problems and then immediately try to run from them, and my problems are nowhere near Aang's problems.

And it hits me on a personal level, cause I can relate to Zuko in this episode, and how hard and awkward it can feel trying to make amends with people and proving that you've changed after you've wronged them in some way. The initial rejection, and then Zuko messing up and accidentally burning Toph, the one person that wanted to give him a chance, really hit hard. A couple examples would be when Japanese would launch night attacks against the allies or howl, terrifying absolutely everyone. Is that rustling you hear a Japanese soldier, or an ally getting up to pee at night? I would feel eternally dread if I got that answer wrong.

To me aang avoiding to talk about looking for a fire bending teacher is less him pushing away his responsibilities and more him just subconsciously rejecting the element and hasn't found a new way of how to either think about it or deal with it. And they literally solve this and bring it to attention in the next episode when him and zuko have to both rethink how the view the element.

It made sense that Toph wouldn't verify Zuko's story while he was there. Toph playing devils advocate while Zuko is around would sorta make it a 2v3 discussion rather than the 1v4 we got. Zuko wouldve clinged to Toph's side for support and it would've been hard to distance herself from him. Also it makes the most sense that Toph would be the first to trust Zuko. From Toph's perspective Zuko was never a bad guy. Zuko doesn't conflict with them at all while she's on the team. The only time she sees him at all is in "The Chase" where Zuko was sorta on their side and she got a good impression about Zuko from her conversation with Uncle Iroh. Toph wasnt there for the betrayal in Crossroads of Destiny. (Edit) wow I paused after the scene replying to my first paragraph and then you basically say my second paragraph almost verbatim.

for me it makes sense since Azula just showed her that her lie detector isn't 100% perfect so if Azula was able to absolutely lie to her face without showing any signs maybe Zuko could have a similar ability, at the very least she would think not to trust her initial reading blindly (no pun intended) so she waited for a while before announcing it

yeahh it's hard to tell WHAT it is, but I think it's similar to the 'heat something up' technique Iroh uses.. he's sort of forming a channel of heated air, and then explosions happen. so if his head turns, the channel turns with it. but it still should have kinda curved as it bent, it's not a laser.

@@decimation9780 I think the issue here is that... whatever this thing is we're seeing, projecting from his forehead.. it looks like air, or some kind of invisible force moving/changing the look of the air.. and it moves outward at a speed significantly below that of light. It takes a second to reach its target, see.. therefore it feels weird that, as he turns his head, it immediately swings outward like a beam of light. Whatever this thing is, it's rigidly connected to him. But I feel like in this shot, the animators should have chosen a different way to depict that.. if i'm right, it should trail off as his head turns, still hitting pretty close to them, but if you're right, it should actually swing outward, making an arched path.. like if it's the equivalent of a laser-guided missile.

I loved the way the really pushed the envelope with the Katara letting Zuko know exactly what would happen if he even thought about screwing up again. It's not a threat. It's a promise. And, they way she turns and walks away is so over the top as well. She doesn't even glance behind her because she isn't afraid, and it's almost as if she wants him to attack. I think Zuko's respect for her and the power of friendship grew three sizes(Grinch reference). Up to now Zuko only knew strength thru fear, power, and status. Iroh has tried numerous times to show him that true strength comes from love, friendship and, kindness. To Zuko, mercy and kindness have always met with his suffering. He stood up for Fire Nation soldiers and was scarred and banished. He stood up for the Earth Kingdom family in episode "Zuko Alone", and he only received hatred and fear. He released Appa and got deathly ill. The good thing is he keeps trying because as we all know, Zuko never gives up. Now, now he sees what honor really means. I think this moment, as Katara confronts him, marks his true belief that he is now on the right path.

another small detail which I think is very overlooked maybe im looking too much into it but as zuko is explaining to the frog his plans on how he is going to convince them that he is on their side, the frog I think represents the gaang in this episode. when zuko screams at the frog "whats your answer?" (to letting him join) the frog leaps away symbolizing what the gaang did when zuko first approached them. they turned him away. and Zuko also tells the frog "yeah thats what I would say too" - so here he believes he doesn't deserve a second chance but moments later the frog comes back and leaps infront of zuko giving him hope i think. once the gaang realize his true intentions they give him a chance. much like the frog eventually comes back to zuko the gaang comes around aswell. just a nice little detail.

Makes sense, too. If you were faced with the prospect of having to wander around the world forever on a wild goose chase, you would probably be the most thorough during the first stop when you needed to really study your mark, as a sort of last ditch hope that you wouldn't _actually_ have to leave your home (very much), and when the wounds (mental, emotional, and physical) were still fresh and stinging and you want something to take the pain out on.

This was a great episode. I’m really happy that the group doesn’t just accept Zuko. And how Katara straight up refuses him even after the group accepts him. It’s realistic, not some ok we totally know you are a good guy cartoon bs.

It’s also what really makes Zuko’s redemption arc stand above all others; he doesn’t just do one great deed and that’s it, he puts in the effort to try and be better, and he still slips up sometimes, but never fully relapses back into his dark ways.

Combustion man's death was brutal but combustion woman's death was legitimately fucked up for a "kids" show. Especially if you slow it down, Korra didn't pull any punches

I think a little detail that’s missed is that the attack that burned toph wouldn’t have hurt anyone else. It would’ve just singed the bottoms of their feet, but because toph is barefoot an attack meant to dissuade someone from coming close ended up actually inflicting damage.

I personally always thought it was weird how toph told the gaang that zuko was telling the truth about appa but then decides to not tell them that he was telling the truth about everything else. Could've erased like half the episode.

Didn't she though? She said he was being sinercre. The point is more that Aang, Katara and Sokka likely just still don't believe anyway since they aren't expecting any behaviour from Zuko aside from what they are used to.
@avatarman6924
@avatarman6924 2 года назад
Yeah I can definitely see that, but I always that sincere was more meant to be interpreted as appearing truthful, plus given that fact they forget she's blind every other episode. It could in my mind mean that they have also forgotten that she's a human lie detector.

@@avatarman6924 The problem is Toph is not a 100% lie detector. She can be tricked in multiple ways. She literally only can read people's heartbeats. Also, Zuko was nervous, on edge and has betrayed them before, even when he was genuine like at Ba Sing Se. Toph would have also told you he was telling the truth there but he changed his mind. So from her point of view, he's sincere and trustful. From everyone elses, he's maybe telling the truth but also dangerous and could have fooled her, if not have been telling the truth but willing to backstab them. Even when Aang does buy into him being sincere and being good, Katara still threatens Zuko's life. Even if Zuko was literally glowing with a magic power that shows he's truthful, there would be hesitance within the gang, let alone Toph telling them 3 minutes after he leaves and being very blunt about it

@@shadowofdimentio4618 also azula fooled her lie last detections episode. Sure, it wasn't exactly the same as an outright lie, since obviously it wasn't a lie she genuinely was trying to get them to believe, but still it could have given at least a bit of doubt to tophs lie detection accuracy. Also unrelated, but for some reason my phone tried to correct azula to "aqualung". I just felt someone should know that, as I am baffled.

What I also love about the conclusion of the Combustion Man arc is that hiring him to "end" Aang was the last thing he did as Aang's enemy, and saving him from Combustion Man's blast was the first thing he did as an attempted ally. Comes full circle.

For an episode about varying perspectives, it's nice that we get some pov's from combustion man, and that it takes place in an upside-down temple.

you mentioning that the episode is all about perspective made me realize the temple having the upside down architecture is probably symbolism relating to that

I dont know what you are going to do after this series is over, but I would love to see some character based episodes. I really like the little inputs you have to talk about but I would love to see a full deep dive on one character. Whatever you end up doing, im sure I and a lot of people will enjoy it. Keep up the good work man.

I kinda see Katara's threat at the end to be more personal than anything 🤔 She's a pretty crap judge of character compared to the rest of the team, so as a result she's very "once bitten, twice shy", like Zuko crossed her once and she won't let him do it again
