So this is an except from a part of my script I decided not to add into the video. I took it out because I didn't wanna end things on a negative note, but I figure I'll still throw it in here in the comment section for anyone who wants to read it. "So, I don’t typically do this kind of post episode discussion, but I feel it’s warranted in this case. And, I feel that way because… well, this episode is really unique; not just because of Ryuzaki’s death, but because, unlike most episodes this one is filled with an abundance of “anime only” scenes that don’t appear in the manga. And, typically I wouldn’t have anything extra to say about that - I mean, they’ve introduced “anime only” elements before and it’s been fine (ex. Episode 15 with Light and Ryuzaki standing atop their respective “towers”). But this time some of it… some of it really kinda fucked with the overall flow of this episode in a way that’s difficult to ignore. Like, I did the math and 45% of this episode is anime original content; if we were to remove the anime original content then the characters would have pretty much stayed in that main lobby the whole time; it would have gone from Light and Ryuzaki talking, to the Chief barging in talking about Kira killing again, to Ryuzaki wanting to test the notebook, to him and Watari dying, Light finding Rem’s remains and taking the notebook, and him then claiming to be the God of the New World. The anime original content is everything in between - basically, four scenes; the flashback at the beginning, Misa’s song, the rooftop scene, and the staircase scene. Now, the first two - I don’t have an issue with, really. I feel the the first serves to give some emotional weight to Ryuzaki’s death - both in a sense of foreboding as well as during the actual death scene; it also did well to serve as a sort of soft introduction to Wammy’s House and the two new characters who’ll be coming out of there. As far as the second is concerned, I think it shows us that in Light’s absence, Misa goes to a dark place (ha!); she’s not invested in Kira’s mission so much as she is invested in Light as a person; plus that scene connects to the end of the series in a pretty powerful way, I feel. So, those two scenes are fine - but the other two? Like I tried my best to infer what I could from them and I think I (and my wife) did a good job of making sense of them given the overall context of the episode, but, honestly? They're just… they’re honestly kinda hollow. Like, I spoke about the lack of inner monologue during those scenes - and, sure, I made the argument that it was done to stay on the theme of silence - but, if I’m being 100% honest with myself? It’s likely because there was nothing of substance to be said because all of it was just gonna be dropped once they went back to the Main Lobby. Like, it wasn’t until I got to the end of this episode that I realized that you could honestly remove those two scenes in their entirety and it would change nothing about this episode, because Ryuzaki had already put his plan in motion; hell, he probably did it before we even hit the Title Card in this episode. And furthermore, going back to the staircase scene and the whole Judas/Jesus connection that I mentioned earlier - that’s a really popular theory, but to me it just doesn’t line up at all; for one, Ryuzaki, who is supposed to be Jesus in that situation, is actively plotting against our stand in Judas. Like during both of these scene he knows that he’s got something lined up to have Judas executed instead of him. Not only that, but after Judas betrays Jesus - he immediately regrets his decision, whereas Light looked him in the eyes as he died and smiled like, “gotcha bitch.” Like, outside of the visual reference it just doesn’t work at all. And, yeah - I don’t know; I don’t typically overanalyze the actual structure of an episode - mostly because I’ve never really needed to. And, if I’m being honest - personally, I don’t find it as fun to do this because I imagine a lot of work went into creating something unique for this episode - but I just couldn’t ignore the fact that some of that additional content is… directly at odds with the story they’re adapting and it just… well, *for me*, it didn’t really work. From a subjective standpoint - I honestly adore this episode; it hits so many emotional beats, and it does it effectively. But from an objective standpoint? It was honestly the most annoying episode to try and make sense of."

I think it's a fair point, especially given that... yeah, the Judas imagery doesn't work at all. Light didn't _betray_ L, Kira-Light and L were always enemies. Judas immediately regretted his actions, Light was smugly elated. And heck, L is not a christlike figure; he's a pragmatic, often out of pocket detective; if anyone sees themselves as christlike, it's Light, and even then he's far from deserving of this... glowing self-assessment. I think the anime kinda wanted to lean into the christian imagery without understanding it Evangelion style (which is odd because they took out all the catholic elements from Mello, a character _built_ on 'crosses are cool')

I always found the foot scene really weird n out of place n was like why this in here. Even hearing about the Judas theory I was like it doesn’t make sense. Spoilers for later: Also after this it feels like the whole anime shifted its tone way too hard. Like I get why they would, but maybe they could have paced the tone better. Like maybe Light kept up his guard for a little bit and episode or two keeping his front up to not draw attention before relaxing n not giving a shit would have felt a little better. But the time skip also doesn’t help either… n I get why they had to.

@@overanalyzinganime That's definitly what it was. Why do you think L decided to confront him on the rainy rooftop? It's because the raging storm would mask the sounds of any wire taps or microphones. He knew Light would know this which is why he was presenting this question to Light as a final chance just to be honest with each other. To keep it real now that they both know L has lost and just try to be genuine for the first time they've ever known each other (aside from maybe good Light). Light's methodical scripted answer kinda told L that he doesn't give a f about humanities and doesn't care enough to grant L this dying wish during what they both know will be his last day or so alive.

I wish Light could have given him an ultimatum. Like, "Kira is going to end this soon, L. If I were you, I would run away and leave this alone for the rest of your life." Not explicitly saying he is Kira but still enough of an acknowledgement to satisfy L. L won the game of figuring out who Kira is, but surviving that game was never an option. I'm curious to see how L would have handled his final moments knowing he could live if he just let it go, but will die if he doesn't.
@Solidjj
@Solidjj 8 месяцев назад
I like your interpretation of the rain scene. For me, I always saw it as L mocking Light. L has always seen Kira, and by extension Light, as someone trying to play God. So in the scene where he dries his feet, I always felt it was as if he was trying to say “Is this what you wanted? Does it feel nice to be treated as God?” as he’s more or less replicating the scene in the bible as the sinful woman washed Jesus’s feet before his crucifixion. The washing of the feet in that story also symbolized a sort of baptism, which could also mean the scene is sort of a baptism by blood as L admits defeat, granting Light his “godhood” that he so badly wanted. Or maybe he’s into feet and he a freak like dat

At this point both of them had to talk in codes because even though victory was right within their reach admitting to the elephant in the room gives the other the game almost as forfeit. I always looked at Ryuzaki's actions here "sucking up" to Light as him setting up for the future. Ryuzaki knows he's lost. Either the Kiras kill him the moment he goes to test the 13 day rule, or he manages to obfuscate what the test was about for a little bit but once the 13 day rule is proven false, Light will just clean house. So Ryuzaki does everything here essentially to play to Light's ego and emotionally manipulate him. Showing himself as resigned and defeated, being at Light's feet. He's endearing himself to Light to make things easier for Near and Mello later. Near and Mello are smart, but neither of them can do emotional manipulation. That's Ryuzaki and Light's thing. So Ryuzaki does three things this episode to help his successors out - he and Watari ensures the data will be erased so Light can't learn about Near and Mello too soon... He pushes the 13 day rule test so when he dies, Near and Mello know which rule forced Kira's hand... and he endeared himself to Light by acting respectful and outwitted - putting a chip in that perfect armour of his. And it works, later Light thinks so highly of Ryuzaki that he constantly underestimates Near, he constantly refers to Near as an inferior pale imitation of L... and as a result, Light is WAY less careful than he would have been if it were Ryuzaki.

Yes. Also he grew up in a christian country, he heard church bells all day long, he may have also done that to mirror jesus washing judas' feet before jesus' apparent defeat. However, through dying this way and having had followers he carefully selected and taught, he eventually won (the roman empire turned christian three centuries later). Now what exactly happens in the second half of Death Note? We think L was defeated but in the end he does get the victory

Your wife’s interpretation is spot on and actually lines up with real world criminal behaviors. One thing I’ve learned from watching police interrogation breakdowns is that innocent people tend to react to criminal accusations with shock and anger while guilty people tend to react calmly and rationally, bc they think it makes them look less suspicious when in reality it’s actually the opposite. This lines up perfectly with Light’s behavior and the stark difference in his reaction is a telltale sign that he’s become Kira again, which Detective L definitely picked up on

I've always thought that the rooftop scene was trying to convey the idea that Ryuzaki himself was aware of the fact that he was about to die, since, at the time, he didn't know if his plan to check the 13-day rule would actually receive approval or not... Therefore, knowing that, most likely, he has already lost this battle against Kira, he was simply trying to get Light to let go of that immaculately perfect facade he had been building basically since they met. To me, it's as if Ryuzaki was saying: I don't care any longer about this cat and mouse game we've been playing all this time. I already know your true nature, you also know I already know, and it really seems like I've lost, so please, could you stop pretending for just one second during what is probably our last time together? Hence, why he looks so disappointed when Light answers with such a perfect, calculated response.

In regards to Misa's song, I personally thought it was referencing how Misa knowingly acts as a useful pawn for Light. You pretty much said how Despite being impulsive, Misa is smarter than people give her credit for. Bringing back to my point, I think Misa mostly acts more stupid than she is because uses that persona to draw people to her and in regards to Light she acts like she doesn't know what she's doing so he can essentially "check up" on her and teach her how to do things correctly. When she asks the question, what happens when she knows it all, she is acknowledging once she's mastered what she needs to do, when she reveals she's very smart and doesn't need help, people and Light especially will have know reason to "check up" on her and questions what will happen when she'll be alone for good.

37:30 - I don't know. I think L might be right. This series really got me into the idea that "Amnesia" Light might just have been a bored Sociopath putting self-preservation above all else. And it is interesting to me that we got so little internal dialogue from him. I wonder if that's also the case in the manga. And lets not forget that Amnesia Light is the same guy who went nuts when he got the notebook in Episode 1. Basically, when he lost his memories, he was reset to a day before finding out that the notebook works. So we at least know for sure that this "good" Amnesia Light is just 24 hours and one killing weapon away from becoming an god-obsessed mass murderer.

But you cannot ever truly know yourself until you've actually had it in your own two hands. Until it's not just a thought but a reality. Until then you'll never truly know what kind of person you are. It's easy to say you'll never do X when you don't have the ability to even try to do X. Rem killed watari cause she saw him when he tortured Misa. It s enough to go for him. For the roof scene : i think the smile goes for the 2 explanations : L realises that light is Kira and that it was (not so) useless to come close to him. He smiles as he understands that the very second he had shown his face to kira leads to this moment. His equal. And they can t both survive. Misa is more dressed UP as a doll. No will, she only does what her master makes her do. Being kira is not what she wants, and yeah, WE only see her happy around light. Without him she ll die, like a doll without owner. @@finel3141 the task force was originally an official police task force and was huge until everyone quit for their lives. There would be documents at headquarters showing who was assigned to it, and every officer that left the task force would know who remained on it. True the task force eventually quit the force but that doesn't erase the memories of who was assigned in the first place. I have to say when L was talking about how he says Light's responses are always so perfect is so right. His responses when he's "kira" sounds so perfect so scripted, like a computer written the perfect response (he literally sounds like he's reading off chat gpt responses) to make him seem less suspicious. But when he isn't "kira" his responses are filled with emotions and sound more genuine. It's fucking crazy how no one else heard that beside L.

You brought it up when she was singing , the death note has brought her nothing but suffering yet she somehow manages to keep going ? It’s very depressing and that gothic look she had with the blank stare is exactly how I’d be if I had been through a third of what she has tbh I just wish she had more of a role besides Lights lap dog and not even one he treats well If she had stayed alive for the amount of years Gelus or Rem added to her life span she could’ve started a whole new lore of a love scorned immortal killer loll but that’s just my imaginary head canon

i always saw the whole rain and washing feet scene as a Ryuzaki accepting his defeat, he's pouring out his emotions, he upfronts confronts Light, asking if light ever told the truth sounds like pure frustration and like Light's evil smile when he is dying, it's a indirect admission, in his case that he isn't just suspicious but that he knows Light is Kira. i see the feet washing and all of his lines as mocking him, like he was pretending to not hear light then he goes back to his usual self, living his life like normal until the end comes.
@nathanpatera9836
@nathanpatera9836 8 месяцев назад
I think the symbolism makes sense. Ryuzaki cleaning lights feet symbolizes the pure and inncoent Jesus cleaning who he KNOWS will be his deceiver and betrayer Judas. It symbolizes the pure of heart being betrayed by evil. Also, Jesus is friendly and close to his disciples, he knows their hearts and loves them. Nonetheless Jesus still cleans his betrayer-to-be's feet knowing this. In the same way Ryuzaki knows Light is Kira because Ryuzaki has gotten to know Light and became 'his friend' as well. In a way, this may also be Ryuzaki acting out of friendship and fear of Light. EDIT (as put in my reply to OA's comment): I agree [that the symbolism does not sit quitte right with what's actually happening in the scene], but I can see it both ways. My comment (somewhere here) just fights for the symbolism a little more than you gave credence; but I can also see how it does not line up at all, and to your point, Jesus/Light would not be repentful of his sins, having done nothing wrong. But I think, this element of wrongfulness or duality of intepretation of this symbolism ITSELF juxtaposes using the contradiction, to show how wrong, messed up and twisted the world and the situation is, that Ryuzaki is being compassionate and merciful while also serving Justice. This may just symbolize the duality of God, Kira's good other, being both trying to the apprehend Light and serve Justice, but also shows him mercy and compassion. It really shows the sickening and twisted nature of evil, in the constant war of good and evil are in constant flux, and Good always being the better, humble in its meekness. So this strong juxtaposition ends up symbolizing the nature of the pure and loving, and the wicked hateful. It may even symbolize a novel retelling of Jesus and Judas's symbolism, that shows God's mercy and love, and his excecution of Justice.

it does feel odd that matsuda is so detached from the inherent coldness that comes from adamantly backing the death penalty, but i feel it could be interpreted another way. That beneath his well meaning attitude and bumbling personality, is not just a guy with a strong sense of justice, but also a guy with with an absurd passion for vengeance. maybe he has a tragic past, maybe he just watched too many action flicks, idk, but i find this idea interesting that matsuda's kindness and empathy _is_ what helps him make such cold judgement calls with so much confidence.

My interpretation of the rooftop scene is Light almost saying “I know you know that I’m Kira, but what can you do about it? Nothing.” Giving his “basic” answer to if he’s ever told the truth is not him “trying to fool L,” but rather him keeping up the “act” just “for the hell of it.” He knows he isn’t fooling L, and at this point, he doesn’t care.

Thoughts on the rooftop and stairs 31:10 - 48:20 I think what happened with L in the rooftop scene is he's quietly come to terms with the fact he lost to light. Him standing in rain is like a silent tantrum. He's as good as dead anyways so he doesn't care for his wellbeing. And I think his whole dialogue with light on the roof is very toungue in cheek. He's very aware of his impending fate and wants to atleast get some little banter/joy out of light before he dies. Why not? So he pretends not to hear light to make him repeat himself. He teases his death with the "i hear the bells stuff". There aren't actually any bells, L doesn't hear them either, it's just a very fitting analogy he thought of as he remembered of his past. It also fits in for narative reasons. L self depriciates as part of his tantrum. I think he half expects confort from light. And I think light without his memories might have been willing to give L some encouraging words seeing the state of the investigation currently and how that is obviously affecting L. Remember this is the first time L is experiencing complete loss. When light replies with his snark, L comes back to his senses and keeps pushing light. Light obviously keeps playing innocent, so in an attempt get light to do him a favor of dropping the act or aknowledging that he is kira for once, L asks if light has ever told the truth. In the silence, light knows L is serious and he has to respond to that question. L isn't impressed with his response as we see. I think this moment IS a big thing because L basically knows that even light losing his memories was all a big lie orchestrasted by himself. Over the course of this conversation L has been throwing soft jabs at light, at the point when he asked this question i think he was just fed up, so he gives light the perfect opportunity to be honest. L really wanted to get the truth out of light for once in their whole relationship but light lies again. I think the silence works great for this scene as there's probably not much going on in either of their heads. I think what L's intentions are made clear and we know light doesn't have a solid tactic or aim in the interaction. He's just in deny and axt normal mode until rem does something. I think that's also why light keeps up the act even more. L's life is basically over, light is sure if that, but light ultimately hasn't decided that. He needs to wait on rem. We've seen light is not afraid to come out and show himself as kira to people who he knows are as good as dead. We saw that we rey and his wife. So no matter how painfully obvious it is that L knows he's kira he can't admit it. For all he knows L could be mic'd up and trying to get light to incriminate himself. Anyways, after this L realizes he's not getting anything out of light and smiles thus he stops trying. In submission, he steps out of the rain. After this point i believe L calms down a bit and stops his childish tantrums. Like he's reached the final stage of grief. I think we're passed the point of L thinking light doesn't have his memories, as we see at many points L comments on a shift in behaviour from light, and starts treating light deferently. I think the reason L was on the roof in the first place is because he came to the conclusion that misa and light are kira and he is about to die. After the roof scene I think L is still a bit salty. Kind of childish and mature at the same time. In a way of saying 'this is what you want right, people to worship you?' When he says "it's the least i can do to atone for his sins" he's playing into lights ideal world view, i don't think he's trying to pander to light to extend his life. I think he's too prideful to do that. I think it's more in character for L to accept his loss quitely as he is currently doing. L put so much stake on him winning, that his loss has him fully submitting to light's will. It's a more gracious way to accept a loss even if he is doing a bit much, but remember he has never experienced such utter defeat. (cleaning someones feet is something only really done by subjects to their master). This is pretty much what the world looks like now. Light will become the god he wanted to be. Even L is basically at light's mercy from his point of view. And seeing as L lost, he thinks he ought to act in this way as the loser (maturely). That explains why he is very apologetic. Like a defeated army joining the winners side. What solidifies this is L says "you'll get used to it" in response to light being uncormfortable with his feet being cleaned. I agree 100% that light has real pity for L, at this point. When light returns the kindness and drys L's hair. He sees light does have some sort of fondness towards L. And lastly when L says "it would be lonely wouldn't it" he's referring to lights ideal world after L is gone. As light doesn't seem to be taking much enjoyment from having his feet cleaned (physically being worshiped), what is there for light to do once his world is complete. L himself knows how he'd feel if light were to lose and this game was over. But L isn't worried about that right now considering his situation. He then goes, we'll be parting ways soon to light as a genuine goodbye and "it was fun while it lasted" farewell. Then when L got that call he snaps back to his job. Knowing the only thing he can do now is fulfil his duty until he dies.

2 whole years of videos. Death Note already was my favorite anime but with these videos, all the theories, all the simbolism you create and the different ways to view the events that happen in this series, much deeper than something i could've thought being younger and watching Death Note for the first time. It's just amazing, it changes from a story about a book, a detective and a boy to a story about how the power given to you not by destiny but by chance, luck, how your curiosity your desire for the unknown can change your life course forever. Even if you have a perfect life, a bright future, we will still want more power, it's a drug, you want to be satisfied by it and you will search for more and more power until you're literally drowned by it's density. The way the bells are used, how the "Light" actually is the personification of the worst darkness you could've think off, the manipulative monster that eats the hope and life out of you. It's just a masterpiece and it made me love this story even more, and i'm thankful for that actually, it made me learn many things and even make me see myself in certain situations, how i could turn out to be, would i fall for the lust of power and be corrupted? or would i have the strength to maintain control of my objective? It's just so so interesting to think off everything and see how it mirrors our existence and how little encounters change our whole lives for the worse of for the better.

For the scene in the rain, I think your wife's interpretation was closer: L wanted just one moment of humanity from Light now that it was basically over, and Light would not even give him that. Instead he gave a perfect liar's answer, which was another test for L. I could see Light as always lying in the sense that he molded himself into the perfect upstanding member of society, probably always saying what was expected of him.

I think it's the 5 stages of grief. First stage is denial, he can feel he's going to die but is trying very hard to work everything out behind the scenes of hq, anger at light when asked about have you ever told the truth, bargaining, when he cleaned lights feet, sadness when he said it will be lonely won't it he sad the game is over and he lost and there will be no more games ever, acceptance pushes full throttle with plan even though he knows he is sealing his own fate but he feels with this he will win in the end.

You know, when I think about it, I considered that the scene with Ryuzaki washing Lights feet was actually close to Ryuzaki getting to the bargaining stage of grief after realizing his time is coming to an end soon. I mean he's basically saying "I can wash your feet for you, I can give you a massage, and I can atone for my sins if you let me live. Wouldn't you be less lonely if you let me live?" Then I thought that perhaps most of the scenes in the episode were actually Ryuzaki going through the stages of grief. I mean he's shown to be significantly less motivated early in this episode, suddenly very depressed even. I mean anyone would be if they knew their life was going to end soon and they couldn't do anything about it. And the scene where Ryuzaki goes back into the lobby to discuss using the notebook for an execution and saying "We're so close! The entire case will be solved!" and suddenly going back to his normal confident self feels straight up like he's jumped into denial. Although he knows his time is coming up and with so many new and unknown variables Kira may have already won, he's going back to trying to catch and convict Kira like nothing happened. And of course for acceptance, Ryuzaki in his final moments, in him staring Light in the face and seeing the smirk crawling on his face basically telling him that he was, he is, and he will continue to be Kira to his face, Ryuzaki says NOTHING. He simply accepts this outcome and accepts his death, he doesn't even have any final words, just silence. I know it's a bit of a stretch since I don't think he has any example of anger in this episode and the stages of grief he goes through isn't in order, but to be fair everyone experiences grief differently and maybe that's just in his character to go through grief in the way that he does. Or perhaps there's an even deeper underlying meaning to how he experiences grief in his final hour. Idk, but what do you all think?

Yeah I'd agree with another commenter that Rem went after Watari since he was the next person that could be a threat to Misa. Rem knows no one takes Matsuda seriously and he's limited to what he can do. Plus Watari did torture Misa. Also if Rem knew Watari would erase everything if something happened to him, it would also double as her taking revenge against Light for making her do this. For why L and Watari died so quickly...Rem could have easily wrote in the time that they died lol.

So the Death Note can control the time of death, so maybe to be safe, instead of just writing “L Lawliet” & “Quillsh Wammy”, she added “Heart attack, dies immediately.” I don’t know if it actually would accomplish anything, but I could see Rem thinking that L would be able to figure something out & share it within those 40 seconds. It’s not a strong reason, but it’s a possible explanation for L & Watari’s quick deaths.

The rooftop scene is my favorite. It has shades of meaning layered on top of each other, and through it all, a deep sadness that permeates the scene. We may all interpret it differently, but I like to believe that it’s L reaching out one last time for the truth, but being denied this last wish. I think it works as a test at the same time. RIP L

Rem likely just wrote that they would die if a heart attack in 6 seconds, since i dont think the deathnote prohibits writing times less that 40 seconds.

I feel like L asking if he has ever told the truth and just staring him down is kinda the final “I know it’s you asshole” like a last call out

Why do I feel like I had a fever dream of L writing his own name in the book so Kira couldn't then used that to prove it was light.. somehow.

There's actually a good point. Manga/Anime L wasn't willing to yield his life to beat Light, but if he had been willing to, he could have easily won by DNing himself to die 3 weeks later. Prove the writing happens when it does and L gets to prove that he ended up breaking the 13 Day Rule and his (however temporarily) continued survival proves it to be false. Checkmate, Light and Misa. It's a similar point to the Reaper Eyes' price. More conventionally intelligent people would never go with the involved costly option without VERY sufficient reason to do so. Light wouldn't even need a God complex to make a point about the lifespan halving part.

Some time ago I watched a video (can't remember which at the moment) that analyzed the scene in the rain, and their interpretation of L's question about Light's honesty, was something like "L, being fully aware that he's about to die, addresses Kira directly for the first time since the series began, basically telling Light that he knows for a fact that Light is Kira, and basically asking him to stop pretending just once before the end of their rivalry." Sort of an open and honest acknowledgement of their ongoing battle. I'm not doing the interpretation 100% justice, and I wish I could remember the video (I'll look for it soon), but the interpretation felt really powerful to me, and that's how I've taken this scene since then.

16:36 You mentioning this just made me realize, Misa is actually NEVER told that Rem threatened to kill Light if he didn't save her, right? From her perspective Light/Kira really did just, selflessly, throw himself into months of confinement and lose his memory, at risk to himself, just to save Misa. And he not only saved her, he also completely cleared both her AND himself as suspects of being Kira. A feat that impressive probably would seem very 'godlike' to her. Misa was there when Rem said she'd kill Light if Misa died before her lifespan, and Misa acknowledges that Rem's made him into her knight, but she also adds to "not actually kill him, okay?" so I think Misa genuinely thinks Light did all of what he did out of his own volition to rescue her. She seemed fully ready to die for him to keep his secret safe (even tried biting her own tongue off) so him rescuing her instead of letting her die/killing her himself would probably stick with her through the rest of the show

Taken from another video about the rooftop: Complex scene. In L's mind - Kira has returned. Light Yagami is acting off, not in tune with his past self. There's only 1 conclusion to be drawn - Kira has somehow returned to controlling Light. Or perhaps it's more likely Light gave away the notebook & has gotten possession back. The identity of Kira was held within the book itself. In his search to prove Light's guilt, he's unleashed the real Kira once again. L worries the Light he knew of recently was always capable of becoming Kira. That despite it all - Kira is his true unfiltered soul. You test a man's character through power - and Light has failed. L wonders if he would also fail. If somebody as clever, well adjusted, heartfelt & honest could become a ruthless monster - then it means everyone is a monster, right? We can chalk it all up to the Death Note corrupting everyone, it's not their fault. We're only human. Or - the more terrifying answer. The one L truly fears. Light was never corrupted by the Death Note. He was only revealed for the special type of monster he is. One of those lying monsters that L warns of in the Relight films. A monster that lies. Posing as human, without humanity. Eating, without hunger. Studying with no interest. Seeking love with none to give. L believed himself to be this monster. Now he's being eaten by one. Light is assuming the identity of L, his tactics, his planning, he's consuming L entirely. He's going to continue to devour L until Whammy's House is gone. Kira would have no issue wiping out an orphanage if he thought they posed a threat. Light Yagami is L's vision of himself being spat back at him. Long before Kira, long before the notebook - Light Yagami lies. Whether he knew it or not, Light had Kira buried in his soul. A true monster. Lying to even himself. L here is making a genuine attempt to ask if Light has always been this way. No bullshit, no tricks - is that the real you? Is Light in there? Have you just been corrupted? Light fails. He knew L knew. He could've just said yes. He could've let it all drop for one second & be a human. Instead Light presented this almost rehearsed response to being confronted - equating his behaviour to others & excusing any wrongdoing in his life. Light truly understood L's request, truly understood L knew the game was coming to an end & STILL lied. That's why Light's smirk at L in his final moments is so gut-wrenching. Light could've continued to lie - as he normally would. But no, Light had one reason to reveal the truth. He needed L to know he beat him. He's essentially denied being Kira for the last time, even when L gave him an opportunity to stop playing before the game ends. Light even repeats this later - declaring victory at the last second. Not to drop the facade, but to gloat. He did the same to Naomi. The only other ever person to see the monster. This is when L realised who Light truly was. Light Yagami isn't Kira. Kira is wearing Light Yagami like a suit. He's irredeemable. He lies. He's L's darkest reflection. He's never been under the influence of the Death Note or a Death God, or anyone else. It's just been an evil boy doing these things. And L pitied him to an extent, knowing his end would be Near.
