overclocking my AMD athlon ii x4 640 

My Athlon II 640 x4 3GHZ, is overclocked to 3.480GHZ running at 6C on idle, running a Corsair A70 cpu cooler. Very stable.

@GTR717 power supply doesn't fit as it got a fan ontop of it but in theory it shouldn't do any significant imbalance in the case if u do a hole on the top back of the chassi for the power supply fan

@gamerdude1989 That's not the case for all processors. Not all processors have unlocked multiplier, that is, not all processors have unlimited multiplier. Most processors have limited multiplier.

@Crysis482 the amd althon ii is good runs really good even at normal clock speeds which is what i have it on since i dont see need to overclock it yet

@galaxy366 OC tuner is only for Asrock motherborads, you can use MIS afterburner to overclock it but i highly recommend overclocking though the bios not software...

Seems like you got that CPU Thermal Throttling left on in the BIOS. I currently have the same processor but my current motherboard is really bottlenecking alot of things right now. I can only get HT Link of 1000Mhz which suck balls, currently got a Motherboard on order which is the Asrock 770 Extreme3 which hopefully will put things to where they need to be. Probably be a good thing to leave Thermal Throttling on if you running on a stock cooler but if you have an aftermarket you should try turning off and it'll give you a performance gain in games.

@gamerdude1989 the Multiplier is limited to 15 on all amd athlon II x4s so you have to adjust the Core speed if you want to overclock it

i am aware of that. i said it has no L3 cache (well at least out of the box)

@3dwardXP to get to 3.8ghz i did disable cool n quiet, encrease the voltage, use the BIOS ect... this was just to test OC tuner

@xXxCr1ZxXx i keeping my 640 x4 at: 267*14= 3700mhz 1440 vcore, i can hit 4,0 ghz (267*15) with 1,50 vcore but i don't know if it will be stable i have to check it out... anyway i keep this "strange settings" because i set the ddr2 divider to 800 mhz with the bus increase they hit the default clock 1066 mhz 5-5-5-15

you arent overcloking anythink because that cpu havent got an unlocked multiplier. you only can overclok it using fsb. the maximun clock in windows 10 will appear like 3.8 but you arent going to have a better performance

what sizee is your psu, if i were to do this with a 500w psu and an xfx 5670 would it overheat or anything? i have the same cpu

More heat, faster speeds, possibly lower reliability, better gaming, less wait. I'd overclock, just don't over do it or you'll make it unreliable and unstable, also get hot. Research and do it one by one until you're satisfied with it and it isn't blazing hot.

@Aexification you wont notice much difference bettween ddr2 and ddr3 at games but you will probabily notice some difference 4gb of ram and 3gb of ram

@rishabh425 i overclocked mine 2 mins ago to 3,2ghz its stable and cool :D but for 4ghz or more i get scyte mugen 2 rev b! its only cost 32€ and one of best over clocking coolers!

@furiousfr4nk i have a 450w psu, you would be fine with your 500w psu and it shouldn't overheat since your computer only uses around 350w

remember to change ur ram multiplier thingie becouse you are are overclocking your memory when u change the cpu frequency

The 650 or the 640? Because they're both good, but the 650 is better. It'll hold up good with the 560 ti, but if you get lag it'll need to possibly be turned down in your resoulution.

I'm not saying that's impossible, but 14°celsius is... BEAST WATERCOOLING just u must cool with water, because I have this CPU, and it's 25 minimum ... so a question .. do u watercool the CPU?

@GTR717 not trying to be a hater, just don't want ppl to see this and try some quick adjustments and get stuck with a blinking monitor light and go mommmy i broke the pc i see people talking about auto overclock utilities that just about every manufacturer is marketing and bundling with their motherboards. PEOPLE OF RU-vid - NEVER AUTO overclock anything not for 3 pct not for 10 pct it does a horrible job and has no actual idea of what your hardware limitations are, theres science to OCing!

oh, they are a list of asrock motherboards not processors, you need an asrock motherboard for OC Tuner to run

Hi, my bios doesnt give me an option to raise CPU multiplier, im running now 245mhz x13=3185mhz and NB is 2450mhz and i want to go higher but i must lower NB frequency. The problem is there is no option for lowering NB either. How can i lower it?

Don't be fooled by that faulty Asrock cpu sensor, it says me 15° on idle when the temperature here are about 23°-24°, impossible.

your overclocking your bus without adjusting your mem speed or timings = your gonna crash... and your HT link is at 2.2ghz... and your using software to overclock so i am willing to bet that you have not adjusted any voltages at all and you probably still have speed stepping / cool n quiet enabled.... you may have 3.85ghz but not for long if you have continued to overclock so haphazardly, use the CMOS, and keep the other things inline! chip should hit 3.3ghz on stock voltage (220 fsb or so)

For anyone that has this cpu I manged to oc from the bios 3.6ghz on 1.6v

got mine stable on 3.15 Ghz (5% oc) everything above shuts down while under heavy load so i dont think this is stable what u did here , u need to show if its working properly

Check my channel quick vid of my temps, these processors are underrated for over-clocking ability's as you will probably agree with GTR17. Screen shot of me playing in bios, got it to 5.2GHZ before it complained about voltages, then i turned it back down to 3.4GHZ lol

If I understood it right, you're air cooling your CPU. That would mean that your room temperature has to be about 14°C as well. What the fuck?!

@taejamhaha lol xD AMD athlon ii x4 640 max tempreture = 71'C cuennt AMD athlon ii x4 640 tempreture at 3.5ghz = 17 C so thats why i have't disabled the cool and quiet yet, i will if i overclock it over 3.5ghz

when overclocking any cpu, you never adjust the Core speed / Core frequency, You always adjust the Multiplier.

Very stupid overclock. Don't use programs in windows to overclock. You need to go into Bios to make sure your HT and NB frequency doesn't go too high when you change the FSB. You also need to lower RAM frequencies to increase stability. Lastly, Turn off AMD cool n' quiet.
