Professor Richard Dien Winfield presents his conference paper titled: Overcoming Actuality: How Hegel Frees Us from the Prison of Modality. The paper was given at the conference Examining Hegel’s Idea of Self-determination: From Actuality to Concept, which took place at the University of Warwick on 6-8 June 2019.
From the introduction: "Since the rise of early modern Western philosophy, the modal categories of actuality have reigned supreme over almost all the philosophical academy. Possibility, actuality, and necessity have become the encompassing framework of the world most thinkers purport to be able to know. Imprisoned in these three modalities, our universe has become inhospitable to life, right, beauty, and reason, for none of these can fit the chains of necessity that actuality imposes.
Only one thinker has put actuality in its proper place. He has shown how its modal categories subvert themselves and usher in a different order of objectivity in which freedom, not necessity, has its place. This thinker is Hegel and if we follow him in thinking through the categories of actuality, we discover how reason can liberate itself from their chains.”
Unfortunately, our intended recording equipment wasn’t up to the task of recording long sessions, so we had to improvise. And, due to further technical difficulties, a small fragment of the present recording was lost. This occurs around the 40min 55second mark. For reference, here is the omitted part of Professor Winfield’s paper:
"Accordingly, we must also refrain from treating the universal as an essence, reflected in secondary appearances, which the ancient theory of forms tends to do. Unlike any type of two-tiered determination, from the positor of illusory being through substance, the universal does not have any given identity prior to its own particularization. It does not actualize what is antecedently determined to be possible and thereby exhibit necessity."
