Anyone could have an artist block, Anything could affect as you both mentioned, no sleep well, the pressure to do art, many things could affect the creativity, in my case music always help me to create and think… I use the grid guide a lot, really helped me. Thank you for the great conversation. And I think when Joel provides a stencil he is clear, this tutorial is not about creating a bird or a boat. Its about the technique to make it look painted and how to shadow and. highlight and make the colors work for you. As a software engineer we do simliar things. Its actually very common. When I write a program, I copy from one thats already done because a ton of it is the same in every program. I do not need to reinvent or write that code from scratch. My job is to create the processing thats needed. Not to write a completely new and fresh program. I think the same can go for art. Honestly thats what makes digital art so appealing. I am good with colors but maybe not at good at making a bird. So I can use a stencil and then make it my own. The art comes from how you make that bird your own interpretation, not crating a bird. thank you so much for another brilliant episode. regarding the talk about doodling, i do like your doodle challenge, great fun. Sometimes when I'm stuck or tired I like to do some zentangle-ing. I am by no means great at it but that's not what's important. "Tangling" is like having a set list of instructions so you don't have to think about what to do next, but creatively, you can put those lines anywhere you want to. It's a great way to relax your mind and yet, still be doing creative work.
The conversation about the grid method is interesting. When I first learned of the grid method, I absolutely loved it and it helped me to learn quicker. Speaking with another student in art, his teacher wouldn't allow it, said it was cheating. Regardless, following both your tutorials, I love the fact that you create without the grid and just by following your advice the final product (on my side) looks great! The tutorials have also helped me to build the confidence that I can create without the tools, like the grid, as well. My goal is to improve, so I am open to methods and tools that improve my work overall.
I (Joel) think that some tutors can forget what it’s like at the beginning of a students art journey. They can forget the period of being uncomfortable or not as confident as themselves. We all go art for different reasons, we can all do it different 😀
