Overcoming Evil With Good | What Hacksaw Ridge Is Really About (Film Analysis)

Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, is one of the great war films of modern cinema. Many war movies, especially those set in Vietnam, focus on the nature of evil during war. Hacksaw Ridge focuses on the nature of good. In this analysis, I breakdown how Desmond's faith survives a trip to hell and explore a few ideas fundamental to the Christian philosophy Desmond subscribes to.

No the best part is this movie underplays Desmond's accomplishments. One example is when he kicks the grenades away and gets hit. He gave up his stretcher to someone else and knew his way back to his line he got shot by a sniper. And crawled 300 yards back. He also served longer than the movie shows. I find that incredible

@@LifeIsAStory I'm not a perticularly religious man but I think a good example of a world without the love and hope that belief in god can bring is the sci fi universe of Warhammer 40,000. The summary of 40k is this. A nameless Emperor set out to build a great empire across the galaxy under the rule of logic and reason. Yet as you will find in 40k so bent on this ideology was he that his legions began committing acts of mass murder and horror. And by the time his dream finaly came true it all came crashing down. For as any 40k fan will tell you " In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war! There is no peace among the stars. Only a eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods. What links 40k to hacksaw ridge is how 40k can be associated with the military in hacksaw ridge. A organized logistical society that demands you obey it like a religion. But not a loving religion. A cruel and ugly one that will strip flesh, bone and innocence from you into there is nothing left but hate.

Something that I believe that you missed is the double meaning of what Desmond's father told him. He said, "if you make it back from the war, you WON'T be giving NO thanks to God". A very clever line and most would interpret it the way you did in that he will not be thanking God, but literally, the double negative become positive meaning that if Desmond makes it back, he will be thanking God (wont be giving no thanks = will be giving thanks). It's an incredible piece of writing and one that is almost universally missed. Great breakdown, as usual.

I've watched two of your videos so far and they're amazing. What drives men to do the things they do are, most of the time, so much more interesting than the acts themselves. I know that I don't possess the steadfast religious beliefs and faith that Desmond did. My experience in combat was absolutely nothing like what he or anyone went through in WW2. Yet I came out of it with less faith in many things, religion being the biggest. Awesome breakdown! Really looking forward to more from you. Thanks!

By far the most powerful moment for me is when Smitty dies, and the army withdraws. Looking bewildered into the distance, Doss prays, "What is it you want of me? I don't understand. I can't hear you!" And then he hears a desperate scream, "Medic! Help me!" This was why he was there.

There's a difference between 'religion' and 'faith'. I have little use for organized religion, but faith is a different matter. Yes, various religions have been responsible for some of the worst cruelties we can commit - believing you're right, and everyone else is wrong, is a very dangerous thing - but many, many wars and genocides have been based on political beliefs, desires for some kind of utopian society, greed, prejudice against a particular group, etc. Cruelty can always be justified, somehow. But holding on to a faith in goodness, kindness, forgiveness, peace, and love for all - like Mr. Doss - shows the best of what is possible. 'Hacksaw Ridge' is one of the best films - certainly one of my favorites - made about war and/or faith.

Curious that you say, "I have little use for organized religion," when Doss was literally a Seventh-day Adventist. To him, "faith" and "religion" were one and the same. And if you read his award citations, witness accounts, and personal memoires, not only were the events he went through _watered down_ in this film for the sake of believability, but his religion (and yes, the structure/hierarchy that came along with it) was a part of his very being. It both drove and, I would daresay, blessed him to perform the miraculous acts he performed during the Second World War. There is purity in Christ's words when he said that the Kingdom of God is in _all_ men, but even He said at many points during both His mortal ministry and His interactions with the Jews during the Old Testament that there is structure and order in the Kingdom of Heaven. Doss recognized this (if his adherence to his sect is to be believed). And I think we would all be a little bit more like him if we followed his example. Even in part. In my humble opinion, it is good to have faith, but we deny the importance of religion at our peril. And not just in a spiritual sense. The current post-modern mess we find ourselves in (and its rapidly approaching collapse) is a testament to that fact.
@curiousworld7912
@curiousworld7912 2 года назад
@@RexSpec It's the institution of religion that I have issues with. Once something becomes an institution, all interests are in the promotion and protection of said institution. It becomes very easy for those in the power structure of any institution to say 'It's the will of God', or 'service to the institution will be reward in itself', or fly it under a flag to be fetishized, or in extreme nationalism. It's just far too easy for corruption to set in. I believe the worst thing to happen to Christianity, was its becoming the 'official' religion of the Empire. The first thing to happen, was the 'straight thinking' officials of the Church persecuting those who had a differing perspective or interpretation. No thanks.
@RexSpec
@RexSpec 2 года назад
@@curiousworld7912 What you speak of is the inevitable duality of _any_ ideology. Whether it's an institution or not. True, institutions can become corrupt, but reducing religion to little more then vague spiritualism is not exactly a safe harbor from corruption either. With your framework, it becomes all-too-easy to say, 'all we need is love to solve the world's problems' (such is the case of the Agape Christian sects), or 'better to be tolerant then be strict on the commandments of God,' or 'there is no hierarchy before God because everyone is equal' (a rosy sentiment, but such a mentality deliberately ignores the parable of the talents, and the structure God laid out since the time of Adam... not to mention such a mentality makes it's proponents more apt to take on a Socialist approach when it comes to the structure and purpose of religion). No insitution or ideology is immune from corruption. And you may argue that institutions are more susceptible to corruption then your framework, but in my experience, both have proven to be equally susceptible to corruption and lead to equally dire consequences, but for different reasons and via different mechanisms. We're a long way off from the time of the Spanish Inquisition or the tumultuous Protestant Reformation. And presuming that we are on the road to re-living the Dark Ages for telling someone they are wrong and should feel guilty for committing a sin is kinda proving my point.

Even as an atheist, I cannot deny Doss’ Christ-likeness and willingness to transcend animalistic human nature. His story is a testament to the fact that the will is a powerful tool that Nietzsche points out: “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering”. I understand why religion is needed and I do not believe it needs to be rooted out.

12:13 I kindly disagree. There are people in this world who do not believe in any god and do good. Just because people want religion to have less influence, and that we should focus our society around science, does not mean that we get rid of humanity. I do not believe in a god and still try to help as much as I can, maybe not on the same scale as Dos, but as Gandalf once said so eloquently, "I have found that it is the small everyday deed of ordinary folks that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.". On a less constructive note, yes, Dos was a hero because he stuck to his beliefs. But you can turn that argument around. People used and still use religion (a lot of the time with political agendas in mind) as cover-ups for horrible acts of violence, so you could also argue that sticking to religion makes the world more violent. It's a very difficult topic All in all, I am definitely subscribing to this channel. The fact that there are "only" 11K views on a fantastic worded, produced and executed analysis is such a shame. 5 minutes in, I even took the two hours out of my day to watch Hacksaw Ridge for the first time, so I can go into this, knowing what you're talking about.
